T: Music Styles: Bossa Nova (Films)

Documentary about the birth of bossa-nova, in Brazil, and the major stars of this musical style.

The greatest stars of music from the state of Bahia, Brazil, got together in an unforgettable musical event in Termas de Caracalla, Rome, between 21 and 31 August 1983. In adition to the musical numbers, there are backstage scenes, rehearsals and interviews.

Nominated for a NAIRD Award as Best Documentary Video. It documents the origins and development of this highly sophisticated Brazilian music style. The archival footage includes stories and reminiscences with lots of intimate revelation from Antonio Carlos Jobim. Plenty of performances from a 1992 Jobim concert. Other musical highlights include Caetano Veloso, a Jobim/Frank Sinatra duet and Joao Gilberto. This film traces the Bossa Nova influence around the world with Gerry Mulligan, Henry Macini, Michel Legrand, Stan Getz, Chet Baker, Sinead O'Connor and others. 52 minutes of fascination, humor and great music very stylishly presented, and narrated by Peter Coyote.
