    DirectorTom GeorgeStarsKieran HodgsonPearl ChandaGregory Cox
I had wanted to watch this for a while. It took me too long, but it was hilarious and stylish when I finally saw it.

Farmers from a village exploited by bandits hire a veteran samurai for protection, and he gathers six other samurai to join him.
    DirectorAkira KurosawaStarsToshirô MifuneTakashi ShimuraKeiko Tsushima
It is a true classic, and the runtime is worth it.
  • Godzilla and Mothra: The Battle for Earth (1992)

Japan is caught in the middle of a three way battle between Godzilla, the divine Mothra, and her dark counterpart Battra.
    DirectorTakao OkawaraStarsTetsuya BesshoSatomi KobayashiTakehiro Murata
A good edition to the Godzilla Heisei era, the only era I need to finish to finish the whole series.
  • Jack Perrin in The Apache Kid's Escape (1930)

Staying one step ahead of the law, the Apache Kid helps out a cowboy in trouble.
DirectorRobert J. HornerStarsJack PerrinFred ChurchJosephine Hill
A very, very bad western. The worst film I’ve seen this year.
  • Minnesota Clay (1964)

    5. Minnesota Clay

    19641h 30mNot Rated
    6.0 (1K)
Wrongfully imprisoned for a crime he did not commit, Minnesota Clay seeks revenge on the man who withheld evidence at his trial. The catch: he is going blind.
    DirectorSergio CorbucciStarsCameron MitchellGeorges RivièreEthel Rojo
Sergio corbucci’s second western has flaws, but is entertaining.
  • Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis in Top Gun (1986)

    6. Top Gun

    19861h 49mPG50Metascore
    7.0 (529K)
The Top Gun Naval Fighter Weapons School is where the best of the best train to refine their elite flying skills. When hotshot fighter pilot Maverick is sent to the school, his reckless attitude and cocky demeanor put him at odds with the other pilots, especially the cool and collected Iceman.
    DirectorTony ScottStarsTom CruiseTim RobbinsKelly McGillis
I finally watched this 80’s classic so I could see the new one. It looks great and is a fun time, even if it lacks plot or much substance. Not particularly good, but very entertaining and memorable.
  • Clint Eastwood in High Plains Drifter (1973)

    7. High Plains Drifter

    19731h 45mR69Metascore
    7.4 (68K)
A gun-fighting stranger comes to the small settlement of Lago and is hired to bring the townsfolk together in an attempt to hold off three outlaws who are on their way.
    DirectorClint EastwoodStarsClint EastwoodVerna BloomMarianna Hill
I’m a big Eastwood fan, but I was disappointed. It should’ve been good, but the protagonist is unlikeable and misogynistic, and it’s just generally not very well-written. Clint causing chaos in a western town is funny at times, but not enough for a 100 minute movie.
  • Manos: The Rise of Torgo (2018)

    8. Manos: The Rise of Torgo

    20181h 30m
    4.7 (111)
Prequel to Manos: The Hands of Fate.
DirectorDavid RoyStarsDanny McCartyJackey Neyman JonesElizabeth Redpath
The Manos series is notorious; the first film is one of the worst ever made. Here is the prequel, which is my first ever 1-star rating for a film. The first one is fun as bad as it is, so I gave it a high rating, but this is just absolutely stupid and cheap, and can’t decide if it’s a parody or a serious film.
  • Yella Rottländer and Rüdiger Vogler in Alice in the Cities (1974)

    9. Alice in the Cities

    19741h 53mNot Rated78Metascore

A German journalist is saddled with a nine-year-old girl after encountering her mother at a New York airport.
    DirectorWim WendersStarsYella RottländerRüdiger VoglerLisa Kreuzer
A masterpiece from Wim Wenders that definitely inspired one of my favorite directors, Jim Jarmusch.
  • Joseph Cotten in Too Much Johnson (1938)

    10. Too Much Johnson

    19381h 7mNot Rated
    5.7 (893)
A woman has two lovers. When one man finds out about the other, he acts as a villain and chases after the protagonist.
    DirectorOrson WellesStarsJoseph CottenVirginia NicolsonEdgar Barrier
Orson Welles’ first film, which never finished the editing process due to legal issues involving the source material, may be very unfocused, but it’s well shot and has some we’d very funny moments.
  • Rocky II (1979)

    11. Rocky II

    19791h 59mPG61Metascore
    7.3 (241K)
Rocky struggles in family life after his bout with Apollo Creed, while the embarrassed champ insistently goads him to accept a challenge for a rematch.
    DirectorSylvester StalloneStarsSylvester StalloneTalia ShireBurt Young
Rocky 2 is a great sequel that may be predictable and may be more concerned with spectacle and popularity the character, but it is still strong in all the ways the first one was.
  • John Wayne, John Agar, Harry Carey Jr., Joanne Dru, and Ben Johnson in She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949)

    12. She Wore a Yellow Ribbon

Captain Nathan Brittles, on the eve of retirement, takes out a last patrol to stop an impending massive Indian attack. Encumbered by women who must be evacuated, Brittles finds his mission imperiled.
    DirectorJohn FordStarsJohn WayneJoanne DruJohn Agar
This Wayne/Ford war western is a bit short, but still entertaining, sentimental and visually appealing.
  • John Wayne in The Telegraph Trail (1933)

    13. The Telegraph Trail

A greedy businessman-turned-renegade foments an Indian uprising against the coming telegraph to perpetuate his economic stranglehold on the territory.
    DirectorTenny WrightStarsJohn WayneDukeFrank McHugh
Though there are certainly problems, and this may be pretty much a cartoon, but it’s use of stock footage elevates it beyond its budget, and it has all the silly action you’d hope for from a b-western.
  • John Wayne in King of the Pecos (1936)

In Cottonwood, Texas, claim-jumper Alexander Stiles killed John Clayborn's parents when they refused to sell their ranch to him. Ten years later, John, now a lawyer, returns under the name of John Clay to exact vengeance.
    DirectorJoseph KaneStarsJohn WayneMuriel EvansCy Kendall
The lack of music in the b-western severely affects the film, and beyond that, it’s just not particularly interesting.
  • A Pistol for Ringo (1965)

    15. A Pistol for Ringo

    6.5 (2.5K)
An 'angel-faced' gunfighter is tasked with infiltrating a ranch overrun by Mexican bandits and saving their hostages, including the fiancée of the local sheriff.
DirectorDuccio TessariStarsGiuliano GemmaFernando SanchoLorella De Luca
A lighthearted but gritty spaghetti western classic.
  • Marlon Brando in One-Eyed Jacks (1961)

After they rob a bank in Mexico, Dad Longworth absconds with the loot leaving his partner, Rio, to be captured by the Rurales. 5 years later, Rio escapes from prison and seeks revenge on Longworth, but falls in love with his step-daughter.
    DirectorMarlon BrandoStarsMarlon BrandoKarl MaldenPina Pellicer
This great and influential western epic may be long, but it was originally going to be 6 hours, so that’s okay! You can tell there were cuts, but it delivers all the grit, action and style you’d want in a western, and much more.
  • Shirley MacLaine, John Forsythe, and Edmund Gwenn in The Trouble with Harry (1955)

    17. The Trouble with Harry

    19551h 39mPG74Metascore
    7.0 (43K)
Harry's dead and, while no one really minds, everyone feels responsible. After Harry's body is found in the woods, several locals must determine not only how and why he was killed but what to do with the body.
    DirectorAlfred HitchcockStarsJohn ForsytheShirley MacLaineEdmund Gwenn
This Hitchcock film is bizarre, and the acting is occasionally stiff, but it still has a memorable dark sense of humor. However, I think the play didn’t need to be adapted into a movie.
  • Antonio Banderas in Desperado (1995)

    18. Desperado

    19951h 44mR55Metascore
    7.1 (204K)
Former musician and gunslinger El Mariachi arrives at a small Mexican border town after being away for a long time. His past quickly catches up with him and he soon gets entangled with the local drug kingpin Bucho and his gang.
DirectorRobert RodriguezStarsAntonio BanderasSalma HayekJoaquim de Almeida
This stylish, beautiful and violent film may have a lot of unnecessary blood and a very thin plot, but justifies it in great direction and performances. One of Robert Rodriguez’s best films.
  • Michelle Pfeiffer, Winona Ryder, and Daniel Day-Lewis in The Age of Innocence (1993)

    19. The Age of Innocence

    19932h 19mPG90Metascore
    7.2 (71K)
A tale of nineteenth-century New York high society in which a young lawyer falls in love with a woman separated from her husband, while he is engaged to the woman's cousin.
    DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsDaniel Day-LewisMichelle PfeifferWinona Ryder
A truly subtle and tragic Scorsese romance classic.
  • Tom Hanks in Cast Away (2000)

    7.8 (666K)
A FedEx executive undergoes a physical and emotional transformation after crash landing on a deserted island.
    DirectorRobert ZemeckisStarsTom HanksHelen HuntPaul Sanchez
This Zemeckis/Hanks classic is just as great as the critics say.
  • Dirty Dancing (1987)

    21. Dirty Dancing

    19871h 40mPG-1365Metascore
    7.1 (270K)
Spending the summer at a Catskills resort with her family, Frances "Baby" Houseman falls in love with the camp's dance instructor, Johnny Castle.
    DirectorEmile ArdolinoStarsPatrick SwayzeJennifer GreyJerry Orbach
This movie has a preposterous ending and a predictable story, but the performances are still charming, and the filmmaking is competent, even if not particularly great.
  • Antonio Banderas, Johnny Depp, and Salma Hayek in Once Upon a Time in Mexico (2003)

    22. Once Upon a Time in Mexico

    20031h 42mR56Metascore
    6.3 (174K)
Hitman "El Mariachi" becomes involved in international espionage involving a psychotic CIA agent and a corrupt Mexican general.
    DirectorRobert RodriguezStarsAntonio BanderasSalma HayekJohnny Depp
I love Depp, Rodriguez Rourke, Dafoe and Banderas, but the story in this film is messy, and it’s overall just too high on its own supply.
  • Cay Forester and Johnny Cash in Five Minutes to Live (1961)

    23. Five Minutes to Live

    19611h 15mApproved
    5.4 (1.1K)
A murderous thug and his cohorts take a bank executive's wife hostage after their robbery plans go awry.
    DirectorBill KarnStarsJohnny CashDonald WoodsCay Forester
This was a surprisingly good, suspenseful thriller with a delightfully crazed Cash performance and serious, tense tone.
  • Nicolas Cage in Pig (2021)

    24. Pig

A truffle hunter who lives alone in the Oregon wilderness must return to his past in Portland in search of his beloved foraging pig after she is kidnapped.
    DirectorMichael SarnoskiStarsNicolas CageAlex WolffAdam Arkin
A tragic and unique indie film.
  • Sharon Stone and Gene Hackman in The Quick and the Dead (1995)

    25. The Quick and the Dead

    19951h 48mR49Metascore
    6.5 (108K)
A female gunfighter returns to a frontier town where a dueling tournament is being held, which she enters in an effort to avenge her father's death.
    DirectorSam RaimiStarsSharon StoneGene HackmanRussell Crowe
Though Sharon Stone’s performance is weak and sometimes unintentionally funny, the action, production design, costume design and set design are beautiful. The villain and all side characters all have big personalities, and are always well-acted.
