During a fancy masquerade, Hella Swendsen finds out that her fiancé is the son of a woman who died of alcohol problems and at the same time he breaks up his engagement. Later during the party, she meets the man who considers himself guilty of the woman's death. This man tells her the tragic story of her life.

Professor Mors has made a name for himself as a hypnotist. He shows great interest in the very young Claire Raven, a daughter of a good family. Mors puts Claire under hypnosis.

Thomas Bezug, the richest man in the world, is a solitary, domineering and cruel cripple who hardly can move on his crutches. He dwells a fanatical love for his son, whom he holds like a monkey in a cage.

A three-part historical film: the first episode takes place in ancient Egypt, the second is based on the Hugo novel La Fin de Satan, and the third takes place during the 1917 Russian revolution.
