The owner of a cosmetics factory has made a contract with Radio Sibilla for the transmission of an evening program in which the products of his company are advertised.

While not completly stage-bound, this film of Donizetti's opera doesn't stray far from such an impression. The story of a tragic love affair involving commoners and royality in 1340 Spain finds Ferdinand (Gino Sininberghi) falling in love with a young lady (role played by Sophia Loren, billed as Sophia Lazzaro, while Palmira Vitali does the singing), who is a favorite of the King (Paolo Silveri.) Ferdinand returns from the wars as a hero and the King grants him anything he wishes and he chooses his mysterious lady. But when he learns of her true position, he forsakes her.

Through a series of scenes inspired by famous songs, various episodes of Italian life in the last fifty years are recalled.

Along the way, an elaborate ballet sequence created by Mady Odolensky and danced by Claudia Lawrence and Teddy Barnett is tossed in. Armando Curcio wrote the story, book and lyrics.

When a young singer loses his girlfriend to a wealthy man, he plans to get her back by working with the older man's own ex-girlfriend to get her back.

In a luxury hotel in Miramare, a competition is organized between pop music singers. Famous celebrities and famous singers are invited.

Some time ago, Luciano was wrongly accused by the woman he loved and sent to jail. One day he manages to escape from prison but is seriously wounded. Found by a gang of smugglers, he is taken by one of them, Paolo, to the house of Pietro, an old fisherman who lives with niece Marina, Paolo's fiancée. Thanks to their care, Luciano recovers although his legs remain paralyzed. Not knowing how to thank them both, Luciano decides to help them financially by going to sing at the village's inn. Gennaro, the local organist, who has composed a song for him, records it and sends it to the RAI, where a song contest is organized. Luciano is awarded the first prize but, as he is still wanted by the police, he can't reveal his identity. He has become the"Mysterious Singer"...

Maruzzella is in love with Salvatore but Salvatore is infatuated with Donna Carmela who is the step-mother of Maruzzella. Besides, Carmela deprived Maruzzella of her inheritance. When Salvatore asks Renato, an old school-mate of his, to stay with him, the situation is slowly resolved.
