2007's Japanese NHK Taiga drama Furin Kazan (meaning 'Wind, Forest, Fire & Mountain' NOT The Trusted Confidant as stated above) contains everything you could want in this type of series- characters, action, intrigue, philosophy etc delivered by a superb cast. This is the story of a one-eyed limping ronin called Yamamoto Kansuke whose expertise in military tactics & strategy brings about the rise of the Takeda Clan. While most films made on the subject focus on the warlord Takeda Shingen, Kansuke is very much the focus here. The series is set during the turbulent Warring States Period in the mid-16th century when provincial warlords were constantly attacking each other. The benefits of sound strategy were immense & Kansuke's shrewd manipulation of the enemy reaps dividends for Takeda Shingen. It would be pointless to try to explain any more of the plot - the series spans 50 episodes of 45mins each! Everything from the storyline to the direction to the acting recommends this as one of the finest of the annual NHK dramas. Uchino Masaaki is superb as the wily Kansuke while Gackt turns in a spellbinding performance as the mystical Lord of Echigo. After each episode is a short documentary describing the modern-day sites of the battles/castles/shrines portrayed in the series but be warned! These often give away information not yet shown in the series & can act as a spoiler. Apart from that, Excellent Stuff.

When a ronin requesting seppuku at a feudal lord's palace is told of the brutal suicide of another ronin who previously visited, he reveals how their pasts are intertwined - and in doing so challenges the clan's integrity.

A petty thief with an utter resemblance to a samurai warlord is hired as the lord's double. When the warlord later dies the thief is forced to take up arms in his place.

At the night, Hattori Hanzo, the leader of 36 Iga members who were performing as guards of the castle, perceives the existence of a ninja and captures the sneaker. Unexpectedly, the ninja turns out to be a woman, and Hanzo rapes her. Years later, when the nation is under the rule of Iemitsu, the third Tokugawa shogunate, a magician pair of a mother and her child appears in a busy area in Edo. The mother is the woman ninja, who is actually a daughter of Mitsunari. The pair of mother and son ninjas is waiting for the opportunity to take revenge. They learn the opportunity has come, hearing that Iemitsu will hold a martial arts tournament on the premises of one of his direct retainer, Mizuno Jurozaemon. The winner will be awarded with 10 swords that were captured from Toyotomi family's ware-house. Wakakage, the son ninja, sneaks into the mansion of Ono Jirouemon, a sword instructor of the shogunate and a judge of the tournament, and copies the written proceeding of the tournament. Then, he goes back to his mother, who orders him to steal the 10 swords!

"Genji Monogatari" focuses on the love and hate relationships surrounding Hakaru Genji. Lady Fujitsubo is Genji's first love. Miyasutokoro Ryokuzono is obsessed with Genji and eventually becomes a spirit. Kao Yu, who is from the lower class, give comfort to Genji's emotional wounds. Writer Shikibu Murasaki is jealous of Genji and is eventually ordered by Abe Seime to write a work.

The orphan swordsman wanders into a town and stumbles upon the opportunity to do righteous deeds. He finds a larger plot is afoot with a corrupt court system, a well meaning public servant and lots of danger for all involved.

Shimura Kingo fails his duty to protect the life of the Shogun's chief minister, and spends his life tracking down the assassins. However, all but one of the assassins die before Kingo can reach them. Still, Kingo presses on.

Tsurumatsu, a young boy, is supposed to be a new Lord but he's not really interested, he would rather be a carpenter. So he gets kidnapped and it's up to Nemuri Kyoshiro to save him.

Princess Kiku, Shogun's daughter, wants revenge on Nemuri Kyoshiro for embarrassing her.

This film of the sleepy-eyed ronin series has the red-haired swordsman on his way to the city of Edo when he comes across the scene of a woman in the midst of a knife fight with a man. When he reluctantly and with considered hesitation becomes involved, his intervention has him involved in a thieving plot involving the top official of the local Todo Clan and a plan to cover up a theft from a band of pirates.

This film of the sleepy-eyed ronin series has the quite reluctant hero refuse to come to the assistance of a Japanese Christian in an age of both proselytizing and persecution, but later come around and render the services of his sword following a series of events, with the involvement of a malevolent princess, that lay to bare hypocrisy in many forms.

The shogun's illegitimate son decapitates a peasant which draws in nomadic Nemuri Kyoshiro into more sword-fighting adventures when he's blamed for the beheading.
