Sterling attended Dulwich Village Infants' School, Dulwich Hamlet, The Charter School and St Marylebone School. Sterling always had a passion for performing and as a child she would persuade her younger sister to perform with her and put on shows for their parents. Sterling made her film debut when she auditioned for Carol Morley's film The Falling. Although Sterlinghad no formal drama training, she was later cast as the character Gwen in Morley's film, alongside Maisie Williams, Florence Pugh and Greta Scacchi. After her role in The Falling, Sterling hired an acting agent who secured auditions for appearances in short films and another with Tim Burton. Following an audition and meeting with Burton, Sterling was cast as Olive Abroholos Elephanta in the film Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, alongside Eva Green, Asa Butterfield, Ella Purnell and Samuel L. Jackson. In between her earlier acting jobs, Sterling was waitressing at a cafe and went to drama classes at the Actors Centre.
Sterling auditioned for the role in the mystery teen drama TV series 13 Reasons Why over Skype and had only 10 days to get an O-1 visa as she had not worked in the United States before. She has received critical acclaim for her portrayal of the American high school student Hannah Baker in 13 Reasons Why. Sterling researched the role, speaking with a representative of the sexual assault awareness campaign "It's On Us" and a psychiatrist who specializes in adolescence. In December 2016, she signed with the William Morris Endeavor agency.
She had only ten days to secure a work visa for the United States after being cast in 13 Reasons Why (2017).
She was initially in Avengers: Endgame (2019). Her character was an older Morgan Stark, the daughter of Tony Stark / Iron Man ( Robert Downey Jr. ). However, the respective scene ended up not being added to the final version of the film (although it is available on Disney+ and for Home Video).
