Gloria Swanson plays Tessie McGuire, a shopgirl who, when her boyfriend breaks their date one evening, goes to a party with a louche crowd of artists and hangers-on. She wows them with some zesty mimicry, and so gains an introduction to a better-paying job, impersonating a high-toned Russian countess to attract snobby customers into a dressmaker's establishment.

Katherine Emerson, an Iowa girl hungry for the good things in life, leaves her small hometown and sets out for New York. En route, she is involved in a train wreck in which another woman is killed. Katherine finds the woman's purse and, among its contents, discovers an invitation for the woman to spend 6 months in an unoccupied luxury apartment in Manhattan. Mother Emerson, disturbed that Nicholas is not living with his "wife," writes to him in Europe and asks him to return. Nicholas arrives unexpectedly and is highly amused at Katherine's predicament, taking every opportunity to make her miserable. Katherine finally decides to tell her family the truth, but she is forestalled when Nicholas, who has decided that she would make a good wife, asks her to marry him.

Céleste de Givray, whose social success is the result of the audacity of her press agent, Sam Dupont, is persuaded to retreat from public life and to have her face lifted. At the fashion show, Céleste appears and declares Lola an impostor, but the latter is declared "the best dressed woman" by the judges. Raoul, realizing that Lola has been faithful, returns to her at the cafe and they are happily reunited.
