In 1966 Warner Bros released "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf" without cutting much language and content. The MPAA placed a warning on the posters and ad's explaining it would not edit the film and in some parts of the country theater owners were arrested for showing it. From that experience the Rating System was born with G M R and X ratings for all main stream "studio films". X became NC-17 after a while.
