Before the "Blaxploitation" boom of the early 70's, movies made for black audiences were "Race Movies"; B-movies with an all-black cast, made by dedicated, low-budget studios, which played at dedicated cinemas in black neighbourhoods. A genre with it's own (relatively) big-name draws like Paul Robeson, or Mantan Moreland, or popular musicians/singers like Moms Mabley, Cab Calloway, or Lena Horne; Basically a low-budget, scaled-down parallel version of the Hollywood star system.
