To celebrate one hundred years of Chinese cinema, Hong Kong Film Awards released a list of The Best 100 Chinese Motion Pictures. Among the 103 films on the list, there are 11 films from China (pre-1949), 13 films from the mainland China (post-1949), 61 films from Hong Kong, 16 films from Taiwan (post-1949), 1 Hong Kong/mainland China co-production and 1 Taiwan/Hong Kong co-production.

This is a list of films that I believe are examples of what to do or what not to do, best examples of subgenres, or the history of action, not only martial arts, but also filmmaking, because in the words of Andy Le, there’s not enough people out there who understands filmmaking and martial arts at the same time. You have someone who understands filmmaking, but doesn’t understand martial arts, they don’t know how to cater the camera to the action to optimize the martial arts, or you would have someone who understands martial arts, but doesn’t understand filmmaking, they don’t know about the angles and what looks good in the frame, but if you have someone who understands both, then you’re all set (while I’m on a topic on filmmaking, every movie, short film, video and tv mini series on Criterion (Criterion Channel, Criterion Collection: VHS, Laserdisc, Betamax, DVD/Blu Ray) are all filmschool worthy (I have a separate list of all movies that should be added to the Criterion either channel or collection or both, here’s a link https://www.imdb.com/list/ls561477648, all of the cult classic movies aka the best worst movies are great examples of how to not make a movie, not only you have to learn what to do, but you also have to learn what not to do, there are some movies, short films, videos and mostly documentaries that are shown in schools for educational purposes or just for fun, but that can be a whole other topic).
