I have seen 300 movies from this year, including almost all the high profile ones. This is not a recommendations list, in fact in some ways it's a leftovers list, although I had to have a positive reason to put any film on my watchlist. It's mainly for friends who are following me on my project to watch as many movies from this year as possible.

Slightly more anarchic than other major reviews of the year. Senses of Cinema got the views of 89 different critics on their favourite films of the year. Some went with a lot more picks than others. I have tried to only use firm recommendations, so for example, "honorable mentions" lists are not included. Adrian Danks included "Mad Men Series 3" as a movie in his list, but I have chosen not to regard this as a movie.

The films mentioned here are from the "Editors' Choice" lists, these were mostly top 10s but some naughty people snuck some more in. There were 4 movies in the "20 Best Unreleased Films of 2009" list that weren't in any of the Editors' Choice list, I have appended these at the end of the list.

The individual ballots that made up the "20 Best Films of 2009" and "20 Best Unreleased Films of 2009" were unpublished. All those 40 movies are in this list. They were chosen by "100 North American colleagues" each asked for a top 20.
