This is a chronological list of early movies that are worth seeing from the beginning of cinema to 1919. They illustrate the first steps taken by audacious directors to explore the possibilities of this new media and to provoke a new interest among the public. More often than not, the resources were limited, yet some gems were able to emerge once in a while where the innovations and creativity of a movie maker really shone and paved the way for others.  From this, a few great names were pronounced, directors such as Georges Meliès, Louis Feuillade, D.W Griffith, Cecil B. DeMille and Ernst Lubitsch developed the technique while stars like Charlie Chaplin, Douglas Fairbanks,  Mary Pickford, Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd silently began to shine.
