He directed the feature film The Butcher's Wife (1991), with Demi Moore playing the title role. In her 2019 memoir, Moore wrote that she didn't trust Hughes, and that her agent talked her into making the film strictly for the money. She wrote that "it was a disaster of an experience that I didn't want to repeat". The film was a critical and box office failure.

His wife's name is Margaret, and his daughters are Emma and Sarah.
