The 2012 Canadian body horror film has been newly scanned in 4K from the 35mm protection internegative, supervised by Cronenberg and cinematographer Karim Hussain, with Dolby Vision.

Writer and Director Lowell Dean (WolfCop) is entering the ring later this month with new horror movie Dark Match, centered around a wrestling company. Shudder has released the official trailer that features wrestling superstar Chris Jericho (Terrifier 2).

Dark Match releases exclusively on Shudder on January 31, 2025.

In the film, “A small-time wrestling company accepts a well-paying gig in a backwoods town only to learn, too late, that the community is run by a mysterious cult leader with devious plans for their match.”

The only award season that matters is here! Joking (kind of), but seriously, Fangoria just released the complete list of nominees for the 2024 Fangoria Chainsaw Awards. Considering how often horror gets shut out of the mainstream award shows, it's nice to have at least one thing we can rely on year after year.

Last year's Chainsaw Awards included big wins for movies like The Black Phone, Terrifier 2, and Prey. This time, the categories are again stacked, with films like Abigail, Evil Dead Rise, The First Omen, Talk To Me, Late Night with the Devil, and many more going head to head.

Specific performances are also being highlighted, like Tobin Bell in Saw X and Kathryn Newton for both Lisa Frankenstein and Abigail. It's been a fantastic few years for horror, and it'll be exciting to see which movies pull ahead this time around.

It’s almost time for the Fantasia Film Festival! North America’s premiere genre festival has become the place to be if you’re a horror aficionado, and as a proud Montrealer, I get a kick out of the fact that it all takes place in my home city. I’ve been attending the festival for many years, and I always end up seeing some incredible movies. Last year’s Fantasia featured the Canadian premiere of what’s probably the best horror movie of the last year or so – Late Night With The Devil, and this year’s program seems certain to be another winner, with Fantasia announcing the first wave of titles today.

Writer-director Brandon Cronenberg proves a proper chip off the old block with his second feature, Possessor, a brilliantly directed and startlingly original sci-fi horror that’s worthy of instant classic status. Opening with an immediately unsettling stabbing sequence, the film centres on Tasya Vos (Andrea Riseborough), a seasoned assassin who’s able to “possess” unsuspecting strangers and use their bodies to commit murder-for-hire, thanks to brain-implant technology developed by her employers. However, repeated exposure to the procedure has taken a cumulative psychological toll on Vos and she’s beginning to have trouble separating her own psyche from that of her unsuspecting hosts after a job.

Fans of Brandon Cronenberg’s Possessor will be delighted by this new release from Second Sight films which contains some four hours of additional viewing material, most of it sufficiently visually and intellectually dense that you’ll want to explore it a bit at a time. It begins with an audio commentary featuring Cronenberg himself alongside supervising producer Rob Cotterill, producer Karim Hussain and special effects artist Dan Martin. The four talk easily and enthusiastically, delivering lots of interesting inside information. Despite this, one gets the sense that they’re only just scratching the surface of what they could say, but that’s okay, because they’re given plenty of other opportunities.

Many cinematographers have close relationships with directors, but the bond forged between director of photography Karim Hussain and filmmaker Brandon Cronenberg is particularly intimate. “We’re friends and neighbors, so the visual style for ‘Infinity Pool’ was literally developed in my living room,” Hussain told IndieWire. Hussain and Cronenberg have been working together since Cronenberg’s 2012 debut “Antiviral,” and “Infinity Pool” represents the full fruition of the experiments that began with that film — experiments in disorientation, subjective point of view, and finding a way to create an analog mood using digital technology.

Brandon Cronenberg’s first decade in cinema will have given us a couple of shorts and three feature films beginning with the Cannes Un Certain Regard preemed Antiviral (2012), Sundance-preemed Possessor (2020) and this January’s Infinity Pool – which sees the filmmaker re-team with his cinematographer Karim Hussain. Production would have taken place in September of ’21 and we imagine a little bit of work was needed in post for the Efx. Alexander Skarsgård, Mia Goth and Cleopatra Coleman are the film’s main trio.…...

It’s Estonia, 2007, and the opening sequence of “Orphan: First Kill” assures we are in the realm of a horror movie because it opens with an overheard shot of a car snaking up a mountainous road blanketed in snow. That’s an obvious crib from “The Shining” that horror filmmakers can’t ever seem to resist, and it’s never not a charming genre in-joke in the key of the Wilhelm Scream, an evocative and easy reference filmmakers love to throw in to put us in a chilling mood.

From there, this prequel to the 2009 cult favorite “Orphan,” now directed by William Brent Bell taking over from the first film’s director Jaume Collet-Serra, mostly diverges from such high-minded fare, settling into trashy TV movie vibes for the rest of its twist-laden run time. Nearly 40 years after the release of Mark L. Lester’s Firestarter adaptation, we have a new take on Stephen King’s classic story, this time with Keith Thomas (The Vigil) at the helm. And while this new iteration effectively modernizes some of the concepts and themes at the heart of King’s story and features several killer set pieces that showcase Thomas’ capabilities as a director to boot, where Firestarter (2022) falls short is in its screenplay by Scott Teems that never quite nails the heart of the characters that originally made King’s story so compelling in the first place. Ryan Kiera Armstrong definitely makes for a compelling Charlie McGee this time around—I just wish we were given more reason to root for her character than what we see in this version of Firestarter, resulting in an adaptation that is solid overall, but does feel like it falls short in some ways as well.

No fun discussion of horror should be without it; it’s always a challenge to successfully pull off a short story, as you’ll see when we dig into another batch of Severin Blu-rays, this time thematically tied together by a love of the format. These discs are for all the shorties out there.

Family Portraits: A Trilogy of America (2003):

I thought we’d start with the dark before we get to the light. Family Portraits is pretty much Bleak City, yet brought to life by writer/director Douglas Buck in ways that are surprising, and even touching. The film is actually three separate shorts shot at different points in his career, put together and released as a feature with the subtitle “A Trilogy of America”. Not since “You’ll Believe A Man Can Fly” has one been that apt.

Like that film, Possessor is an unnerving hybrid of sci-fi and horror about the invasion of one’s body by something transplanted from another human being. But while Antiviral focused on a bizarre fan culture in which people injected pathogens harvested from their favorite celebrities, Possessor deals with the ramifications of one person actually taking over the mind of another and controlling all their actions and thoughts.

What better title for Brandon Cronenberg’s initially intriguing second feature than “Possessor”? For one thing, his techno-thriller stars Andrea Riseborough (“The Death of Stalin”), whose chameleonic gifts are as impressive as they remain underappreciated. This, of course, makes her an ideal choice to play a virtually anonymous woman whose career involves burrowing into other people’s brains.

But there’s a bit of defiance in that name, too. When your dad is most famous for expanding the concept of body horror, and you make movies about the very same thing, you can either chafe at inevitable comparisons or go out of your way to acknowledge them.

So does Cronenberg possess the talent of his genre-defining father, David? Well, despite the titular provocation — and openly clear influences — that’s not really a fair question. What’s more pressing is this one: Does he possess the talent to make movies we’ll want to watch?...

It would have been completely understandable if Brandon Cronenberg had looked to become a completely different sort of director than his father. After all, David Cronenberg is a very specific kind of auteur. However, the younger Cronenberg has staked out a claim to similar territory, albeit with his own spin. His sophomore effort Possessor (or Possessor: Uncut), is strong evidence of that. A bizarre, gory, and rather unique science fiction thriller, this is very much what you’d hope for out of a Cronenberg production (whichever director you prefer). If you dislike that sort of thing, it’s not going to change your mind. If you’re a fan, however, this is going to be a violent and weird treat. Horror movies can easily get lost going down a path of just being a gore-fest or just being one big metaphor. The most successful efforts in the genre manage to do more than one thing, or at least aren’t completely simple to pin down. Jay Baruchel’s second outing behind the camera, the horror flick Random Acts of Violence, manages to do this with aplomb. Not only is it gnarly and gory, it’s peddling a message, one rooted in the creative process. Almost a decade after he first began to try to bring this story to the screen, it’s now coming out on Shudder and is well worth your time. Dark Castle Entertainment, HanWay Films and Ingenious Media have partnered on Simon Barrett’s (V/H/S) upcoming feature Seance.

Set in an all-girls boarding school haunted by a vengeful spirit, the horror film will star Suki Waterhouse (Assassination Nation) as Camille, a young woman who arrives at the Fairfield Academy following one of the student’s untimely and violent death.

Silver Pictures subsidiary Dark Castle, HanWay and Ingenious are jointly producing together with Addictive Picture’s John Schoenfelder, Russell Ackerman (Hold The Dark) and Tomas Deckaj. Alex Mace is producing and Hal Sadoff will executive produce for Dark Castle.

Pic is fully funded by Dark Castle, HanWay Films and Ingenious. Genre specialist Dark Castle and UK sales firm HanWay have retained worldwide rights and will commence sales at the upcoming American Film Market.

Man, looking back at it, 2015 seems like an awfully long time ago now. Donald Trump wasn’t yet installed in the White House, the alt-right, though forever bubbling away, hadn’t been emboldened into action across the globe and we, here in the UK, weren’t yet divided by the madness of Brexit.

In director Ted Geoghegan’s debut We Are Still Here, the subtlest horrors came from quiet images of nature. As feature debuts go, director Ted Geoghegan’s 2015 ghost story We Are Still Here was a real kick in the ass: a slow-burn throwback to the work of Lucio Fulci that spent most of its running time building dread and atmosphere before exploding into outrageous gore in its go-for-broke climax. Beyond being an extremely effective haunted house movie (my favorite horror movie of that year), it was also a sad and atmospheric meditation on grief and loss—there was a genuine emotional backbone to the story, making it just as involving as it was scary.

For Mohawk, his 2017 follow-up that recently screened at Chicago’s Cinepocalypse film festival, Geoghegan has done it again, sneaking a real human story into thrilling genre fare. This time out, though, the human story is even more pronounced given its roots; Geoghegan has moved away from the supernatural horror of We Are Still Here and...

The 2017 Fantasia International Film Festival is currently underway in Montreal, and one of this writer’s most anticipated films out of this year’s lineup is Ted Geoghegan’s Mohawk, which is his second time at the helm after crafting his stunning supernatural debut, We Are Still Here, which was released in 2015.

During Fantasia 2017, Daily Dead had the opportunity to speak with Geoghegan, as well as with several Mohawk cast members including Kaniehtiio Horn (who plays the film’s fierce protagonist), Jon Huber (who is also known as Luke Harper to millions of WWE fans everywhere), and Justin Rain (Defiance, Fear the Walking Dead). During our interview, they discussed everything from what inspired the story of Mohawk, their experiences making the film in the wilderness of Upstate New York, and Horn also discussed her feelings on being able to represent both her fellow Mohawks, but also women in general.

Opening in theaters and arriving on VOD this Friday is Steven Shainberg’s sci-fi thriller, Rupture, which stars Noomi Rapace as a single mom abducted by a sinister organization that experiments on her while she desperately tries to escape their clutches. I find it fitting how the first film to relieve the stress I accumulated after a whole year without Fantasia was by shoegazing fetish auteur Steven Shainberg. The director behind one of the most approachable sub/dom kink flics to “get it right” in Secretary, Shainberg’s return to filmmaking after a ten-year hiatus is Rupture. How’s that for buildup?

Rupture dives into the scifi/horror pool and stars this era’s Sigourney Weaver, Noomi Rapace. Rapace plays Renee Morgan, a single mom who is doing her best to provide a nurturing family environment for her teenage son, while at the same time trying to feed other instinctual urges. After dropping her kid off with his father before meeting a friend for a skydiving lesson, things go sideways as she’s kidnapped and held...

As unusual as it may seem, filmmaker Guy Maddin made a documentary about the making of a mid-budget Canadian war film called Hyena Road with his creative partners Evan and Galen Johnson. Titled Bring Me The Head of Tim Horton, Maddin and company take a tongue-in-cheek look behind the scenes, offering some truly twisted and intentionally warped imagery in the style of their recent gem, The Forbidden Room. It’s a hilariously strange short film, and a perfect Hyena Road companion piece, one which Maddin playfully compared to Hearts of Darkness, the essential documentary about the making of Apocalypse Now. Tim Horton‘s parent film, Hyena Road, is less essential, but nonetheless a well-crafted piece of technical filmmaking.

The August bank holiday weekend in London is always cause for celebration for horror fans as the FrightFest horror and genre film festival rolls into the city’s Leicester Square for four days of blood-spattered cinematic mayhem. This year saw the arrival of horror icon and star of Re-Animator and You’re Next, Barbara Crampton, as the Guest of Honour who starred in no less than five of the entries this year including festival favourite We Are Still Here. As always with film festivals it was a real mixed bag, with very few scares but a lot of laughs (some intentional, other not so much) as the filmmakers, many of them horror fans themselves, had a lot of fun playing with the tropes and clichés of the genre while others tried to put fresh new spins on some well-worn material.
