Bappi Lahiri, a celebrated Bollywood singer, composer and politician, died Wednesday in CritiCare in Breach Candy. He was 69.

Lahiri had been ailing from various health issues, including sleep apnea.

Lahiri’s music popularized disco in India in the 1980s and ’90s, long after it had left the West, with his music used in films such as “Namak Halal,” “Disco Dancer” and “Commando.”

Dressed in his trademark gold chains and glasses, Lahiri was an instantly recognizable figure around Mumbai. Born Alokesh Lahiri to a family of classical music singers in West Bengal, he relocated to Mumbai after composing music for Bengali films. His maternal uncle, Kishore Kumar, was a famous Bollywood singer and Lahiri arrived in Bombay, as it was known then in the 1970’s, with some existing Hindi film connections. Aamir Khan was celebrating his success with 3 Idiots when the news of his father Mr. Tahir Hussain's passing away struck the Khan family. Mr. Tahir Hussain passed away in the wee hours of the 2nd of February 2010 by a massive heart-attack.

For the dilettante lot, he was a descendant of Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad, rooted to the ethnic Pashtuns of Afghanistan, but an Indian. Late Tahir Hussain started his film career in 1957 as an assistant director to his brother Nasir in films like Tumsa Nahin Dekha and Dil Deke Dekho He produced films like Hain Rahi Pyar Ke (1993), Anamika (1973), Caravan (1973) and had directed the Aamir-Juhi starrer Tum Mere Ho in the year 1990. Tahir was also seen on screen with Janam Janam Na Saath (1977), Pyar Ka Mausam (1969) and Jab Pyar Kisise Hota Hai (1961).

Bollywood bids farewell to Veteran Filmmaker Tahir Hussain
Veteran producer Tahir Hussain, who breathed his last on Tuesday morning, was buried yesterday evening after the arrival of his son Aamir and daughter-in-law Kiran.The couple, who were in Los Angeles after attending the Sundance Film Festival when the sad news reached them, landed in Mumbai at around 1pm in the afternoon.Friends of the family and industrywallahs kept arriving through the day to pay their last respects to the departed producer-director. Bollywood star Aamir Khan has cut short a work trip in the U.S. after learning of his father Tahir Hussain's sudden death in India.

The director/producer passed away on Tuesday after suffering a heart attack at his home in Mumbai, according to reports.

Khan, who was in Los Angeles to promote his upcoming film Peepli Live, made immediate arrangements to return to India for Hussain's funeral.

Hussain began his career as an assistant film director, before producing several Bollywood projects.

He made his directorial debut in 1990 with Tum Mere Ho, in which his son Aamir starred.

Hussain is survived by his four children, actor sons Aamir and Faisal, as well as Farhat and Nikhat.
