Exclusive: U.S.-based distributor Synkronized has acquired world rights for supernatural romance Can You Hear Me.

The deal was brokered by Iuvit Media Sales on behalf of UK production company Cyhm Ltd, which produced the film in association with Primary Wave Music (Wanna Dance With Somebody).

The mystery historical romance stars Peter Facinelli as an American soldier who is shot while serving in France in World War One but remains determined to reunite with his fiancée back in the U.K., which he does in soul if not in body.

Synkronized said the acquisition marked another step towards building its biggest line-up in 24 years of domestic distribution.

“Can You Hear Me is the perfect film for worldwide audiences. It has love, mystery, action, and an elevated concept that makes it a timeless film” says Synkronized CEO Alex Cohen.

Exclusive: Award-winning stage actor Jos Vantyler and Niahm McCormack (Everything Now) are starring in an international action drama series the explores the dark side of detective work and artificial intelligence.

The pair will star in Cold Mind, an indie production from Algarve-based Spy Manor Productions that begins principal photography in Portugal next Monday (April 15). They’ll appear alongside Portuguese actors Joana Seixas and Paulo Calatre.

The show follows a young detective from London (McCormack) who is thrown into a Portuguese murder investigation, as a spree of horrific killings take place in the sunbaked Algarve. At the same time, other timelines on another continent as the plots dips in the action, detective, tech and mystery genres.

McCormack is best known for her role in Netflix’s British comedy-drama Everything Now and The Witcher. She is represented by The Lisa Richards Agency.

This month’s installment of Deep Cuts Rising features a variety of horror movies, with some selections reflecting a specific day or event in September, and others chosen at random.

Regardless of how they came to be here, or what they’re about, these past movies can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.

This month’s offerings feature killer baboons, deadly office drama, and more.

BBC1’s historic anthology series Play for Today aired for fourteen years, and in that time, it produced a small number of tales that sit somewhere in the vicinity of horror. Episodes also run close to feature length, thus making them more like TV-movies. While there was low chance of finding anything straightforwardly horror in this series, which mainly focused on dramas, there is no denying the sinister quality of certain stories.

Exclusive: Twilight, Nurse Jackie and Supergirl actor Peter Facinelli has been set to lead World War One movie drama Can You Hear Me?, which is due to shoot in the UK next month.

Downtown Abbey’s Matthew Barber and John Standing (V For Vendetta) have been cast in supporting roles.

In the mystery-romance Facinelli will play Samuel, an American officer who is shot while fighting on the front line in 1918 France. The soldier “makes a bargain with the ‘Almighty’ to return to his bride in England, until the last bell tolls”.

Simon Hunter directs from a script by Charlotte Radford who is producing and also starring. Executive producer is Roger King.

While there’s drama aplenty in the notion that octogenarian Edie Moore (the superb Sheila Hancock) yearns to climb Mount Suilven, in the Highlands, the filmmakers too often undermine the dignity of their appealing protagonist with crude slapstick. Hancock makes a determined heroine who deserves better than the knockabout and patronizing treatment her character suffers. UK sales outfit Film Seekers has secured its first deals on Eliza Schroeder’s drama Love Sarah, starring Celia Imrie.

Rights have been pre-sold to the UK and Ireland (Parkland Entertainment), Australia/New Zealand (Rialto), and Japan (New Select). Film Seekers said offers are also on the table for Airlines, South Korea and Benelux.

Love Sarah is about three generations of women who open a bakery in London and is now in production.

Existential themes tend to graft onto characters of a certain age and gender. They’re usually a man in his uncomfortable forties, still some time away from growing wrinkles and walking on canes. But in 2018, we’ve been granted some cinematic access into the life-crises of women over 40 – the Britcom Finding Your Feet came out earlier this year, as well as the French comedy-drama I Got Life! And now Edie, the third film from British director Simon Hunter, is the latest addition to this emerging archetype – and it’s the best of the lot.

Edith Moore (Sheila Hancock) is a devoted housewife, taking care of her wheelchair-bound husband of 30 years. When he dies, Edie feels finally unshackled from her loveless and often abusive marriage, and sets out on her own adventure. Many years prior, her husband denied Edie permission to climb up Mount Suilven in Scotland with her now-deceased father.

Stories about women taking enormous life-and-limb risks are not ones we tell often. Instead we tell stories about women fulfilling their responsibilities: to children and to husbands, mostly. Well, “I did my duty,” growls 85-year-old Londoner Edie (Sheila Hancock: The Boy in the Striped Pajamas), who spent years caring for her difficult disabled husband, who was an asshole even before his stroke. But after he dies, she’s nowhere near ready for the depressing care home her daughter (Wendy Morgan) wants to put her in.

Edie tells the story of an elderly lady played by Sheila Hancock who after a bitter and miserable life decides to release herself from a unfulfilled life by heading off to Scotland to climb a mountain and rekindle some of the magic of her youth.

The last film I directed was a science fiction movie called Mutant Chronicles which was a pretty brutal affair. All indoors with 2000 visual effects shots, it took over two and a half years to complete.

After premiering at the 2017 Edinburgh International Film Festival, where it was also nominated for the prestigious Michael Powell Award, we have a first look at the trailer and poster for Edie.

The line-up for the 71st Edinburgh International Film Festival (Eiff) has been unveiled this morning by artistic director Mark Adams.

This year’s Eiff (June 21-2 July) will comprise a total 151 features from 46 countries including 17 world premieres, 12 international premieres, 9 European premieres and 69 UK premieres.

Highlights include the UK Premiere of Disney-Pixar’s animation Cars 3, appearances from Stanley Tucci, Oliver Stone and Kevin Bacon and the Opening and Closing Gala premieres of the previously announced God’s Own Country and England Is Mine.

Montreal’s Fantasia International Film Festival has announced the Off-Frontières selection for this year’s Frontières International Co-Production Market.

The line-up of 12 projects features projects from Canada, Mexico and the UK, among others, and includes the next features from Dario Argento and Jacob Tierney as well as follow-up features from Fantasia alumni Rob Grant, Pat Kiely, Kerry Prior and Olivier Sabino.

Stephanie Trepanier, Frontières creative director, told Screen: “The Off-Frontières line-up of project always allows us to include more projects we believe in, but couldn’t fit in the official 12-projects selection because of quota limitations or because the project is more advanced than the scope we set for the official Frontières line-up.

“I’m particularly happy that this selection allowed us to feature four more feature projects by Quebec talents, as well as a Canadian co-production to be directed...

Here is our first look at season two of the TV anthology series based on the Heavy Metal comic books (or, Metal Hurlant if you're from Europe). The first episode is called "The Endomorphe" and with its vaguely WWII trench-style look and, well, mutants, I can't help but see a striking resemblance to Simon Hunter's visually striking Mutant Chronicles.

I don't think the first season ever aired on TV domestically, but the Blu-ray is available in various regions.

With Mutant Chronicles director Simon Hunter currently in pre-production on the apocalyptic vampire/zombie feature Last Blood, we caught up with Vincent Guastini, head of V.G.P Effects & Design Studio, who’s been tasked with delivering the flick’s special makeup effects, to get the skinny.

"I'm very excited about working with Simon,” said Guastini of the Last Blood director. “I'm a huge Mutant Chronicles fan, and during our Skype design meetings for Last Blood, we immediately started coming up with fresh ideas for the looks for the vampires and zombies. I have some pretty ‘out there’ ideas so we'll see after more locked in meetings this week with Simon, but he has an open mind and did say, ‘Lets do something never seen before.’”

Red Giant Entertainment Inc. announced today they have financing in place and have begun principal casting for their feature film, Last Blood. The Simon Hunter-directed film is a live action adaptation of a Red Giant Entertainment property that takes place after a zombie apocalypse, when vampires must battle to protect the last surviving humans to keep alive the necessary blood supply.

The film is being produced by Red Giant Entertainment's Aimee Schoof, Isen Robbins and Benny R. Powell, as well as exec producer Christian Arnold-Beutel and Keenspot's Chris and Bobby Crosby. The Crosby siblings created the graphic novel with illustrator Owen Gieni, and Bobby Crosby wrote the screenplay with Nick V. Sterling.

"Last Blood" was published as an online graphic novel in 2006, drawing almost 20 million readers around the world.

Producer Rick Benattar ("Real Steel", "Ironclad") and Cascade FilmWorks are teaming on a live-action feature adaptation of the popular webcomic "Last Blood" says Deadline.

The story is set in a future in which vampires battle zombies to protect the last surviving humans and preserve their supply of fresh blood.

Simon Hunter ("Mutant Chronicles") will helm the project which begins shooting in November. More than 20 million readers worldwide have checked out the online comic since its debut in 2006.

Vampires continue to be all the rage. Sort of surprising considering how few films about them make any money at the box office. But here's a movie that has a pretty interesting premise. But will it make a good movie? I suppose we'll find out in the future.

Deadline is reporting that Reel Steel producer Rick Benattar is working with an upstart production and financing company called Cascade FilmWorks to finance a live-action adaptation of successful indie webcomic Last Blood. Published online beginning in 2006, Last Blood has accumulated 20 million readers worldwide, according to the Deadline article. It's set in a post-apocalyptic world where vampires battle zombie hordes to preserve their fresh blood depots.

Simon Hunter (Mutant Chronicles) is in talks to helm the adaptation of the post-apocalyptic zombie/vampire graphic novel "Last Blood".

The film is being produced by Christian Arnold-Beutel whose Ironclad with James Perfoy recently hit shelves herre in the states.

Synopsis:

After zombies take over the Earth, vampires must protect the last surviving humans so they can live off their blood.

Though Deadline Hollywood reports that Hunter is attached, Simon says these are early talks with more details to follow. He does say the film will provisionally shoot in the Summer of next year.

To be honest I’m surprised someone didn’t come up with sooner. Deadline reports that Simon Hunter has been signed to direct Last Blood, an adaptation of a graphic novel released by Keenspot. Last Blood takes place after a zombie apocalypse in which the walking dead has overrun humans and are slowly hunting them into extinction. This doesn’t bode well for the vampire population, who need the human blood to survive, so they decide to mount an offensive against the undead threat.

Hunter is perhaps best known for the 2009 low budget sci-fi movie Mutant Chronicles starring Thomas Jane. And if you know him from that, you are probably nervous that his new project will turn out just as bad. The movie’s production is being handled by a company called Benderspink, who obtained the rights back in 2008.
