In 1970, she and reporter Joseph Lelyveld earned the New York Times
Publishers Award for their account of the life and death of a
twelve-year-old heroin addict.
Has won many awards, including the National Urban Coalition Award for
Distinguished Urban Reporting and the Lincoln University Unity
Award.
As the first black woman admitted to the University of Georgia, she
braved taunts, vandalism, and angry mobs before earning her diploma in
1963.
