As if it wasn’t enough to inflict the evils of “All Summer Long” upon the world, Robert James “Kid Rock” Ritchie’s looming bid for the Us Senate seems to be picking up the sort of steady, horrifically inevitable momentum common to both recent international politics and inopportune bouts of diarrhea.

Novelists take their time responding to history, and we’re now starting to see what they’ll make of America under Obama. You Don’t Have to Live Like This, Benjamin Markovits’s seventh book, captures a peculiar creature of this time: the young liberal entrepreneur who wants to create a model for urban renewal and make a buck or two doing it. His name is Robert James, and his plan is to buy up five square miles of crumbling houses and empty lots in Detroit and jump-start the area’s gentrification by attracting settlers through an online campaign. Before things take their turn toward the violent and distinctly non-post-racial, Obama himself makes an appearance, delivering a speech with the line that gives the novel its title and giving the narrator a bloody nose with a misplaced elbow in a pickup basketball game. The narrator is Greg Marnier, and it...

40. Empire Records
Directed by: Allan Moyle
Ah, the coming-of-age story. There was no sub-genre more hijacked for a quick buck in the 1990′s. In between the good ones (“Dazed and Confused,” “Boyz in the Hood”), the cheesy ones (“She’s All That,” “She Drives Me Crazy”), and the under-appreciated ones (“The Man in the Moon,” “Angus”), there were the middling ones that, if anything, boasted a cast that would go on to bigger, better things. Enter “Empire Records,” which is not only a coming-of-age story, but one that takes place at a record store, no less. Talk about the double dip. The entire film takes place over the course of one day, focusing on the employees, played by Anthony Lapaglia, Ethan Embry, Renee Zellweger, Rory Cochrane, and Liv Tyler. The independent record store is in Delaware – the hot spot of American music – and sees Joe (Lapaglia) allowing night manager Lucas...

Doctor Who fans got a special 50th birthday treat last night, when it was revealed that nine episodes of the BBC sci-fi drama originating from the late '60s, and once thought lost forever, have been returned to the BBC archives.
1967/68's 'The Enemy of the World' - which sees Patrick Troughton play both the second Doctor and his villainous double, the ruthless dictator Salamander - is now available to watch in full, while 1968's classic 'Yeti-on-the-underground' adventure 'The Web of Fear' is also all but complete, with only the third episode still missing - and you can download both stories right now via iTunes.
And while we're thrilling that these two Troughton tales are now available to watch for the first time since original transmission, we now can't stop our Whovian brain from wondering... what else might still be out there?

'Swordmaster' and stunt double who fenced with Errol Flynn and swung the lightsaber for Darth Vader
As a stunt double, Bob Anderson, who has died aged 89, was among the many unsung, unknown, uncredited and partially unseen performers of motion pictures whose purpose is to remain anonymous while making the star look athletic, acrobatic, courageous or devil-may-care. For those in the business, Anderson reigned supreme in the fencing department, earning the title of "swordmaster". Given the partly Japanese genesis of the Star Wars franchise, it was an apt description of the man who wielded the lightsaber for Darth Vader in his duels in The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983).
In 1983 Mark Hamill, who played Luke Skywalker, blew Anderson's cover in an interview: "Bob Anderson was the man who actually did Vader's fighting. It was always supposed to be a secret, but I finally told George [Lucas, the creator] I didn't think it was fair any more.

Bobby Fischer was not only one of the greatest chess players of all time, he was possibly also one of the most enigmatic figures of the 20th century.
After his 1972 World Championship victory in Iceland against the Ussr's Boris Spassky (pictured right), Fischer - who was born in Chicago and raised in New York - vanished off the radar but resurfaced for a 1992 rematch held in Yugoslavia.
However, Yugoslavia was under a Un embargo at the time, so Fischer's American passport was revoked. When he travelled to Japan on the invalid documentation, he was detained there for nine months (see picture below), before being granted citizenship by Iceland where he lived until his death in 2008, aged 64.
Now his story is being brought to life by the award-winning, Oscar-nominated documentary filmmaker Liz Garbus.

HBO Documentaries is certainly on a roll after producing and/or premiering such films as Gaslight, How To Die In Oregon, James Marsh‘s Project Nim, Martin Scorsese‘s Public Speaking, Reagan, and the Oscar-winning Taxi To The Dark Side. One of their latest films is Bobby Fischer Against the World, and like a few mentioned above, it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival this year.
Liz Garbus‘ doc takes a look at the world’s greatest chess player and received mostly positive reviews at Sundance. I’ve heard you truly have to love the sport to appreciate a doc like this, since his 1972 match with Boris Spassky is the main focus. The film will UK cinemas next month and we have one of their trailers via HeyUGuys. Check it out below.
