‘Maestro’ wins at Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards on the way to Oscars
Image
“Maestro” did well at the Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild on Feb. 18 winning two of its three bids. It claimed the prizes for both period/character makeup and special effects races but lost period/character hairstyling to “Barbie,” which was snubbed by the Oscars. Likewise for “Saltburn,” which won both contemporary makeup and hairstyling.

Of this year’s other Oscar nominees, “Poor Things” lost all three of its bids just hours after pulling off an upset at the BAFTAs, “Golda” and “Oppenheimer” were each defeated in a single race while “Society of the Snow” was snubbed by the guild.

These wins boost the odds for “Maestro” to prevail at the Academy Awards. In the decade-long history of these guild honors, there has been just one year when an Muahs winner did not go on to claim the Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.

That was two years ago: “Coming 2 America...

Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild 2024 Winners Include ‘Maestro,’ ‘Saltburn,’ and ‘Barbie’
Image
The Oscar-frontrunning “Maestro” was the big winner at the 11th annual Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards (held February 18 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel). Bradley Cooper’s Leonard Bernstein opus took period/character makeup and special makeup effects. This puts “Maestro” in the Oscar driver’s seat (led by two-time winner Kazu Hiro) against “Poor Things,” “Oppenheimer,” “Golda,” and “Society of the Snow.”

Two non-Oscar competitors, “Saltburn”and “Barbie,” split the other wins: Emerald Fennell’s psychological thriller grabbed both contemporary makeup and hairstyling, while Greta Gerwig’s billion-dollar blockbuster snagged period/character hairstyling.

TV winners, meanwhile, were divided among “The Idol” (contemporary makeup), “The Crown” (period/character makeup), “The Last of Us” (special makeup effects), “The Morning Show” (contemporary hairstyling), and “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story” (period/character hairstyling).

As previously announced, Annette Bening (Best Actress nominee for “Nyad”) received the Distinguished Artisan Award, and Oscar- and Emmy-winning make-up...

‘Maestro,’ ‘Saltburn’ and ‘Barbie’ Win Make-Up and Hair Styling Awards
Richard E. Grant, Rosamund Pike, Richie Cotterell, Alison Oliver, Barry Keoghan, Archie Madekwe, and Jacob Elordi in Saltburn (2023)
“Maestro,” “Saltburn” and “Barbie” have won the feature-film awards from the Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild, which gave out its annual awards on Sunday evening in Los Angeles.

“Maestro” won awards the two Muahs categories that most closely correspond to the Oscars’ Best Makeup and Hairstyling category: Best Special Make-Up Effects and Best Period and/or Character Make-Up.

“Saltburn” won for Best Contemporary Make-Up and Best Contemporary Hair Styling, while “Barbie” took the award for Best Period and/or Character Hair Styling.

The wins were significant for “Maestro,” which has seen its status as a frontrunner for the Oscar makeup award falter as it lost at BAFTA and the Critics Choice Awards to “Poor Things” and “Barbie,” respectively.

In the first 15 years of the Muahs awards, which ran between 1999 and 2003 and then returned in 2013, the winner for period make-up went on to win the Oscar eight times, while...

Image
The Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild (IATSE Local 706) has revealed the nominees for its annual Muahs Awards, with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 leading the feature competition with four nominations and Maestro close behind with three noms.

Disney/Marvel’s Guardians 3 earned noms in the categories for contemporary makeup, period and/or character makeup, period hairstyling and/or character hairstyling and special makeup effects. Bradley Cooper’s Netflix Leonard Bernstein drama Maestro collected noms for period and/or character makeup, period hairstyling and/or character hair styling and special makeup effects.

The Muahs Guild’s feature nominees vary quite bit from this season’s Oscar shortlist for the category. In fact, Guardians 3 was already snubbed in the makeup and hairstyling Oscar race, failing to make the shortlist of 10 films that advanced to the upcoming branch bake-off.

Last Of Us Episode 5 Bloater Gets Up Close & Personal In BTS Image
Image
A disgusting The Last of Us image shows a close and personal look at the monstrous Bloater from episode 5. Episode 5 saw Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) partner with Henry (Lamar Johnson) and his little brother Sam (Keivonn Woodard) as the four tries to escape violent insurrectionists in Kansas City. Eventually, Kathleen (Melanie Lynskey) and her troops cornered them, but they soon became bombarded by a horde of infected from a sinkhole. Among the swarming infected was a Bloater, which became a talking point on the internet, given its hulking grotesque imagery.

Stunt performer Adam Basil recently shared on Instagram behind-the-scenes images of his role as the fearsome Bloater in The Last of Us episode 5. The actor gives thanks to the work of the HBO show's prosthetics designer Barrie Gower, prosthetic makeup artist Duncan Jarman, as well as the puppet and creature maker company Stitches and Glue and their...

‘Stranger Things’ Vecna Suit Had Pee ‘Flap,’ but Jamie Campbell Bower Still Required Bathroom Help
Image
Vecna isn’t as terrifying in the bathroom.

Actor Jamie Campbell Bower, who played the complicated villain in “Stranger Things 4,” revealed that his terrifying Freddy Krueger-esque full-body prosthetics included a “flap” for him to use the restroom without getting out of costume.

“The bottom half of the suit sort of waist-down, they’re like a pair of trousers that I have to slip on,” Bower said during an interview on SiriusXM’s Octane. “Everything else is glued, but the bottom half are trousers. I have a flap that — this fucking flap — that goes from the chest underneath my buttcrack.”

Bower thanked “poor” prosthetic makeup artist Duncan Jarman for securing his genitals “down there” during the seven and a half hours worth of prosthetic application daily. Jarman chimed in during the SiriusXM Octane interview to joke, “Sometimes you have to get close up and personal with your actors.”

Bower went...

Robert Englund Says His ‘Stranger Things’ Character Was Crafted More By ‘Treasure Island’ Than ‘Nightmare on Elm Street’
Image
Click here to read the full article.

[Warning: This story contains spoilers for Stranger Things 4, Volume 1.]

For Robert Englund, becoming a part of Stranger Things was an itch he just had to give a deep scratch.

The living horror legend who brought the iconic supernatural serial killer Freddy Krueger to life in eight Nightmare on Elm Street films (and a number of TV guest appearances) knows what it takes to give audiences a fright.

And that is exactly what he accomplished in Stranger Things 4, Volume 1 as Victor Creel, an institutionalized Hawkins resident who was accused of brutally murdering his family decades prior to the season’s plot. Creel, who blinded himself with a razor, blamed his family’s murders on a demon. It’s later revealed Victor’s son, Henry, killed his mother and sister with his psychic powers and subsequently became subject 001 (Jamie Campbell Bower) who was later sent to the Upside Down by Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown...

‘Stranger Things 4': Jamie Campbell Bower Explains Why He Was ‘All in’ on His Character From the Beginning
Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Natalia Dyer, Caleb McLaughlin, Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Charlie Heaton, Noah Schnapp, and Gaten Matarazzo in Stranger Things (2016)
Note: This article contains spoilers for “Stranger Things 4” Volume 1.

For a majority of “Stranger Things” Season 4 Volume 1, Jamie Campbell Bower is tasked with introducing viewers to not one, but two deeply unnerving characters.

There’s Peter Ballard, the friendly orderly at Hawkins Lab who, despite seemingly trying to help Eleven, has a disconcerting quality about him that is hard to place. And then there’s Vecna, the monster that is terrorizing Hawkins from the Upside Down. The fact that they are the same person, which is a major plot twist in Episode 7, has to both remain a mystery and also make complete sense as soon as it’s revealed. It was a challenge that Bower knew immediately he wanted to face.

“That’s why hopefully [Peter] comes across as slightly jarring and slightly disconcerting, where you’re like, ‘Oh, on the outside, he seems to be being nice but there’s something off about this person.

Sian Grigg at an event for The Oscars (2016)

First Look at Best Makeup and Hairstyling
Kieran, here. The three films nominated for Best Makeup and Hairstyling at the Oscars this are an interesting bunch. The Academy had a lot of options to choose from and it almost feels miraculous that they didn’t default nominate things like The Danish Girl or Black Mass, which (questions of merit aside) are practically begging the viewer to notice the makeup work in both cases. Even if they’re not yours, it’s a respectable crop of nominees. An aside: if we’re going to get five original song nominees every year no matter what, why only three nominees in this category? Curious…

Mad Max: Fury Road – Lesley Vanderwalt, Elka Wardega, Damian Martin

Previous Work: A lot of features with both George Miller and Baz Luhrmann, but as supervisors (makeup supervisors don’t get nominated, so they weren’t cited when Moulin Rouge! was nominated in 2001)

"Bridge of Spies," "Carol" Lead BAFTA Nominations! Where's "Mad Max?" What About "Star Wars?"
Leave it to the Brits! The BAFTA nominations were announced and they gave us a slightly different look at the awards season! For instance, Tom McCarthy's "Spotlight," the leading Oscar contender in the U.S. just received 3 noms including Best Film, Supporting Actor for Mark Ruffalo and Original Screenplay. No Director nomination for McCarthy.

Meanwhile, Steven Spielberg's "Bridge of Spies," a handsomely-produced period piece led the pack along with Todd Haynes' "Carol," another handsomely-produced period piece. Both films garnered nine nominations each including Best Picture. "Bridge of Spies" and "Carol" will duke it out with "Spotlight," Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu's "The Revenant" (eight nominations), and Adam McKay's "The Big Short" (five nominations) for the Best Picture trophy.

So where's "Mad Max: Fury Road" and "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" you ask? They're relegated to the technical categories. Apparently, sequels, no matter how great they are, can't compete with originals.

More Images and the Trailer from Alex Chandon's Inbred
Earlier today we provided you with some first images from Alex Chandon's Inbred, and now we've got a big batch of more photos, both behind-the-scenes and straight from the film, along with the trailer and a link to the official website.

Inbred is the twisted brainchild of UK writer/director Alex Chandon (official site here), who was responsible for the independent cult feature films Cradle of Fear (2001) and Pervirella (1997) as well as numerous award-winning shorts and music promos. It is a co-production of New Flesh Films and Split Second Films.

Synopsis:

A disparate group of young urban offenders and their care workers embark on a community service weekend in the strange, remote Yorkshire village of Mortlake, which prides on keeping itself to itself. A minor incident with some local inbred youths rapidly escalates into a blood-soaked, deliriously warped nightmare for all involved.

Cast:
