Premium linear channel and streaming service MGM+ announced today a six-episode limited series order for Earth Abides, an adaptation of George R. Stewart’s classic sci-fi novel of the same name. The series will star Alexander Ludwig as “Ish” and begin production in Vancouver on April 8.

Showrunner Todd Komarnicki (Sully) created the series, which comes from MGM+ Studios and executive producers Kearie Peak and Lighthouse Productions’ Michael Phillips and Juliana Maio. Earth Abides is slated to premiere on MGM+ in late 2024.

MGM+ has ordered a limited series adaptation of the George R. Stewart sci-fi novel “Earth Abides” with Alexander Ludwig set to star.

The streamer has ordered six episodes of the series, with Ludwig set to play the role of Ish. Production will begin in Vancover in April with the show slated for a late 2024 debut.

The official logline for the series states, “When a plague of unprecedented virulence sweeps the globe, the human race is all but wiped out. The Gersh Agency has promoted literary agent Sandra Lucchesi and talent agent Matt Vioral to partners, expanding its total leadership to 28 people.

Gersh, which ranks as the lone privately-owned full service agency, makes the move amid consolidation and rapid ground-shifting in the representation landscape. A spokesperson told Variety the elevations serve to “highlight the strength and history of our resources while taking advance of our business around multi-hyphenate clients.”

Gersh is expanding the ranks of its partner class with the promotion of two agents.

The Beverly Hills-based talent firm upped literary agent Sandra Lucchesi and talent agent Matt Vioral to partners, the company said Thursday. The promotions bring Gersh’s partners to 28, out of the 150 agents in its ranks across Los Angeles and New York locations.

It’s a difficult world out there, so once in a while it sure is nice to just sit down with the family to watch a wholesome movie about a wholesome man, his wholesome dog, and their tireless, never-ending hunt for human corpses.

The American Film Institute (AFI), in partnership with Anthony and Joe Russo’s studio Agbo, has named Christina Kelly Holmes as this year’s recipient of the Agbo/AFI Conservatory Development Grant.

Now in its third year, the program awards $25K to a recent AFI Conservatory graduate to develop at least one project with a year-long mentorship from Agbo.

Holmes received the grant for her project For Women Only, a one-hour drama set in 1980s communist Romania about a blacklisted classically trained pianist who becomes a black-market entrepreneur smuggling goods for women into one of the most oppressive regimes in modern history.

"Waterworld" and "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" director Kevin Reynolds has signed on to helm the Biblical epic "Resurrection" for Ld Entertainment.

Based around the New Testament story from the Bible, the story follows an agnostic Roman centurion at the time of the alleged resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Pontius Pilot tasks the soldier with subduing an uprising in Jerusalem. At the same time he investigates rumours of a risen Jewish Messiah and find the missing body of Jesus of Nazareth.

The film is said to play up the mystery aspects of the Biblical story, and tonally is aiming to be akin to "Gladiator".

Patrick Aiello, Karen Janszen and Reynolds worked on the script, and Aiello will produce. A March 2015 release is being targeted.

The project would mark Reynolds' first feature directorial effort since 2006's "Tristan + Isolde". He last helmed the high-rating "Hatfields & McCoys" mini-series.

Ld Entertainment will produce and finance the New Testament story Resurrection from producer Patrick Aiello with Kevin Reynolds set to direct.

The company has earmarked a March 2015 release in time for the Easter holiday on the project, which is styled as a mystery in the tonal vein of Gladiator.

Resurrection marks the second project between Ld and Aiello following the recently announced family project Santa School and will centre on an agnostic Roman centurion at the time of the alleged resurrection of Jesus Christ.

The soldier is tasked by Pontius Pilot to subdue an uprising in Jerusalem and must investigate rumours of a risen Jewish Messiah and find the missing body of Jesus of Nazareth.

Aiello (pictured) will produce with Liddell. Patrick Raymond will serve as executive producer and oversee for Ld Entertainment. Paul Aiello wrote the original screenplay and Karen Janszen and Reynolds contributed to the production script.

Ld Entertainment has signed on to produce and finance Santa School.

Patrick Aiello, Ld Entertainment CEO Mickey Liddell and Pete Shilaimon will produce the story of the search for a replacement for Father Christmas after the legend announces his retirement.

Karen Janszen wrote the screenplay. Aiello created the project and Jennifer Monroe and Patrick Raymond will oversee for Ld Entertainment.

“Patrick brings with him over 20 years of production experience and we are honoured that he brought Santa School to us,” said Liddell. “We are excited to be making a family film and feel lucky to be working with a seasoned talent like Karen.”

Aiello recently produced As Above, So Below for Legendary Pictures as well as The Double. Janszen wrote A Walk To Remember and Dolphin Tale, among others.

Described as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory but with Santa Claus, Ld Entertainment will make Santa School.  In the film, Santa wants to retire and needs to find a top quality replacement so he sets out to find one in his own way. Chicago – As a refreshing departure from the snarky, shrill and soulless time wasters passing for children’s entertainment these days, this wholesome, fact-based drama works perfectly well. It captures some of the innocence and warmth that characterized ’60s-era Disney fare, as well as the blandness and exceedingly high cheese factor.

What initially steered me away from this picture was its awful marketing campaign, which made the film seem as if it were a retread of the “Blind Side” formula: sunny white family helps transform a damaged creature into an inspirational beacon. It’s a sad fact that the titular animal in “Dolphin Tale” has more personality than Michael Oher in “The Blind Side,” which surely stands as one of the worst films ever to be nominated for Best Picture.

Chicago – Charles Martin Smith has had a varied career as an actor and a director. He was one of the famous ensemble cast members of “American Graffiti,” directed by George Lucas, and broke out himself as a director in the mid-1980s. His latest work as a filmmaker was one of last week’s big box office hits, “Dolphin Tale.”

“Dolphin Tale” is the based-on-truth story of Winter (who plays herself), a female dolphin who lost her tail as a result of a fisherman’s trap. In the film she is discovered by a young boy (Nathan Gamble), is nursed back to health by a marine institute headed by Dr. Clay (Harry Connick Jr.) and fitted for a prosthetic tale by Dr. Cameron McCarthy (Morgan Freeman). The ensemble cast also includes Ashley Judd, Kris Kristofferson and Frances Sternhagen.

Elizabeth Chandler ("A Little Princess") has been hired to pen the script for a film adaptation of Ingrid Law's 2008 young-adult fantasy book "Savvy" at Walden Media says Risky Biz Blog.

The story follows 12-year-old Mibs Beaumont who comes from a family that receive their own special power on their thirteenth birthday. When an accident puts her father in a coma two days before said birthday, Mibs takes off to help him and ends up on a wild adventure with her friends and siblings.

Chicago – In the tradition of live-action Disney films of another era, “Dolphin Tale” wears its heart on its sleeve, while at the same time using the characters as two-dimensional window dressing around a based-on-truth story of humans and an animal bonding together to inspire a nation.

The truth is real – a dolphin named Winter accidently loses her tail, and without it faces a handicap that could lead to her demise. Dolphin Tale creates a fiction around that fact and has a boy bond with the animal, leading the adults to help her regain momentum. The film’s strength lies in using the real dolphin to illustrate its own journey and what she represents to inspire humans who have lost their limbs. The weakness is trying to shoehorn a number of well-intentioned fictional roles around her, who don’t accentuate much about the truth, and follow character roadmaps that have been seen before.

Not all family films are created equal. This one was inspired by the remarkable real-life story of a dolphin named Winter who washed ashore in Florida, had to have its tail amputated, and taught itself to swim even without the appendage. As it turns out, that wasn’t the end of Winter’s challenges. Well, I'm done being sentimental for the week.  Summer 2011 was awesome, but you know what's better?  Fall 2011.  Almost Fifty films are releasing this fall, and most of them look to be very, very promising.  This is the time of the year when the excellent Oscar bait hits the screen, in addition to numerous action films attempting to capture the box office glory of Avatar or Titanic. Basically, there's something for everyone this fall.  Whether you're a hardcore movie buff or just an occasional movie watcher, Fall 2011 is a fine time to be a filmgoer!  Hell, even the usual dump month of September looks pretty damn awesome!  So without further ado, here's Tmp's Fall 2011 Movie Guide for September!

No-one knows exactly when Morgan Freeman became sufficiently self-parodic no one outside of Chris Nolan wished to cast him in worthwhile films anymore. Freeman’s laconic voiceover in the ultimate “slow-burner” classic The Shawshank Redemption had been an iconic cinematic trope for years; subject to satire and good natured parody for some time, however, if one had to pinpoint a moment when Freeman spectacularly misjudged his own brand it was in voicing the narration of March of the Penguins.

In the lamentably sentimental National Geographic documentary, Freeman mounted his own oeuvre without irony in an attempt to attribute human characteristics to the behaviour of penguin colonies. This particular stroke of mawkishness silliness became a financial hit, especially after the American right attempted to embrace this faux-naturalism as a crude truism of orthodox biblical morality. The previously good natured parodies took on a steelier edge, underlying the manipulative quality of Freeman’s languid tones.

Kris Kristofferson has joined the cast of the 3D inspirational animal tale "Dolphin Tale" at Warner Bros. Pictures reports Screen Daily.

The project is inspired by the true story of a dolphin named Winter who was rescued off the Florida coast. The film will follow a boy who befriends an injured dolphin who lost her tail in a crab trap.

The boy motivates everyone around him to help save the dolphin by creating a prosthetic appendage to replace its tail, and the mammal's strong survival instincts become an inspiration to people with special needs.

Kristofferson will portray the father of Harry Connick Jr.'s character, a single father who runs the aquarium where the dolphin resides. Ashley Judd and Morgan Freeman also star.

Charles Martin Smith directs from a script by Karen Janszen. Production is currently under way in Clearwater, Florida.

Sometimes, the dry trade news write-ups supply the facts, and the dry facts are you need to know how unfuckingbelievably ridiculous a movie will be. This from Reuters:

Eh... sounds a lot like "How To Train You Dragon," but whatever. Freeman is the doc, and Judd will play the boy's mother. Also starring is Harry Connick Jr., who will be playing a nice marine biologist.
