- Had the distinction of being the last woman to have danced with Fred Astaire on screen.
- Best remembered by the public for her starring role as Marion Kirby on the television series Topper (1953).
- One of the great Hollywood romances of all time. Married to Robert Sterling for 55 years, until his death in May 2006. Worked with him as husband and wife ("The Kirby's") on the TV comedy, Topper (1953). They reunited on another TV show, a few years later, as real people in Love That Jill (1958), which only ran a short while.
- After her death she was cremated and her ashes were placed into the same urn that held the cremated remains of her husband, Robert Sterling. The urn is in the custody of Tisha Sterling in Idaho.
- Received the Women's International Center (WIC) Living Legacy Award in 1998.
- Awarded a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 1501 Vine St. on 2/8/60.
- Later in life she would get strange reactions from some fans who met her, who would ask her, "Hey didn't you die years ago?", confusing her with her character as ghost Marion Kirby in Topper (1953).

- Was considered for the lead in The Blue Lagoon (1949) but RKO would not release her for the amount of money the J. Arthur Rank Organization was offering and Jean Simmons was cast instead.
- In honor of her 100th birthday on January 26, 2023, her name was cited first and foremost in nationwide Born on This Day mention columns.
