Tall, hardened-looking and rasping-voiced German character actor, who came to prominence in the 1970's as a regular member of the ensemble of director Rainer Werner Fassbinder. He was most often seen in menacing or sinister roles, best known internationally as James Bond villain General Arkady Grigorovich Ourumov from GoldenEye (1995). John latterly appeared primarily in television productions.

He became one of Germany's celebrated stage actors with such roles as Macbeth, Richard III, and Iago, while his film roles include 'Fedora', plus leading roles in numerous television productions.

Had classical training at Berlin's Dramatic Art School. Had acclaim on the German stage before going into films in America.
