Dan Aykroyd doesn’t think he will return to the ‘Ghostbusters’ franchise. The 72-year-old actor starred opposite Bill Murray, Ernie Hudson and the late Harold Ramis in the first two sci-fi/comedies as the paranormal investigator Ray Stanz - and though he briefly appeared in the legacy sequels ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ and ‘Frozen Empire’, he has now admitted his time in the franchise is probably over for good because series newcomers Paul Rudd, Finn Wolfhard and Mckenna Grace are ready to "advance" the series in a new direction.Speaking with the New York Post, Aykroyd said: “I don’t see that coming. I don’t see where they would need us to carry it on. “They’ve got a whole new cast, and they’ve got whole new ideas. I think probably they’re going to move on to advancing it beyond the originals, which they should.”Aykroyd, who co-wrote the...

Maybe don’t call Dan Aykroyd?
The writer-star of the 1984 Ghostbusters said it was unlikely he and Bill Murray would return to their iconic roles in the sci-fi comedy franchise.
“I don’t see that coming,” Aykroyd told the New York Post while promoting his History Channel series The UnBelievable With Dan Aykroyd.
The Og Saturday Night Live cast member and Oscar nominee continued, “I don’t see where they would need us to carry it on. They’ve got a whole new cast, and they’ve got whole new ideas.”
Aykroyd, Murray, Ernie Hudson and the late Harold Ramis starred as Manhattan-based paranormal investigators in the 1984 lighthearted action-horror movie, from a script by Aykroyd and Ramis, with Ivan Reitman directing. Also starring Sigourney Weaver and Rick Moranis, the pic became a critical and commercial success, spawning several sequels and reboots, as well as merchandise and a coveted spot in the cultural zeitgeist.

Just before midnight on Nov. 5, Milo Yiannopoulos’ phone rang. On the horn from West Palm Beach, says a source familiar with the matter, was a member of Donald Trump’s family. The caller would soon take the stage at Mar-a-Lago, beaming onstage along with the president-elect as Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the USA” blasted across a room full of supporters awaiting a victory speech. But first, they wanted to personally thank Milo for helping the campaign smear once “useful idiots,” allies no longer wanted in Trump’s orbit, he says. The call — if indeed it happened as described, which, when Yiannopoulos is concerned, is never a given — capped a return from the ash heap for the once-ubiquitous flamboyant far-right rabble-rouser, who shot to notoriety during the first Trump campaign but fell to earth after a series of bruising scandals.

Saturday Night Live, née NBC’s Saturday Night, has broken so much new ground in late-night television that in many ways, it’s shaped the industry in its own image. But who were the firsts among the firsts?

Big names like Chevy Chase, John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd have gotten more press over the years, but Gilda Radner was the first person Lorne Michaels added to the roster. She tragically passed away in 1989.

Variety honored some of the most influential and accomplished women in entertainment at its Power of Women event on Thursday, Oct. 24, in LA. Celebrity guests, including Selma Blair, Amy Poehler, and Elizabeth Banks, went all out with gala-appropriate outfits, some more traditional than others. As the evening unfolded, Kate Beckinsale took home the unofficial award for most unusual look. Fans found her blank stare and ballerina doll style a little “out there” for such an esteemed event. Regardless, the Serendipity star turned heads.

Two former executives on Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune have accused Sony Pictures of engaging in unlawful race, gender, and age discrimination and retaliation against them.
Shelley Ballance Ellis, a Black woman, and her Latina colleague Monique Diaz have filed complaints with California’s Civil Rights Department and the National Labor Relations Board, alleging that Sony’s management terminated them and other workers in retaliation for collectively opposing harmful discrimination and toxic working conditions on Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune.
The pair have spent close to 50 years combined working on the shows. Ballance Ellis was Executive Director, Licensing and Clearance at Sony Pictures Entertainment, and Diaz also worked in the department. The pair were terminated in April.
They are claiming they were terminated because they objected to racial discrimination in the workplace, the pay inequity Diaz experienced, the glass ceiling and other bias Ballance Ellis faced as an older Black woman,...

When Sandra Bullock was announced as Danny Ocean’s sister Debbie Ocean in an Ocean’s spin-off, fans weren’t exactly jumping on the hate train. It was the trend of the time to troll female-led reboots of popular films. The all-female cast of Ghostbusters reboot in 2016 bore the brunt of social media hate. However, Ocean’s 8 did not receive such a reception.

According to experts, the film did not belong to the “geek culture” where films and characters became part of people’s childhood. Unlike such films, George Clooney’s heist film was fun to watch for the adult demographics and hence fans didn’t mind the female-led adaptation much.

When Lamorne Morris was cast as Garrett Morris (no relation) in “Saturday Night” — the movie about the 90 minutes leading up to the first 1975 broadcast of “Saturday Night Live” — he ignored explicit instructions from director Jason Reitman by reaching out to the man he was to portray.
Garrett Morris’ place in “SNL” lore is unique: He was the sketch-comedy show’s first Black cast member. Morris, then a 37-year-old playwright and singer, was originally hired as a writer, but after “SNL” creator Lorne Michaels got hip to his work in the 1975 comedy “Cooley High,” he was asked to audition to be one of the “Not Ready for Primetime Players.” In the film, Morris struggles to find his place in the ensemble, alongside seasoned improvisers like John Belushi and Gilda Radner.

The 2016 version of Ghostbusters remains a weird anomaly in 21st-century comedy. Despite its meh reputation, the movie is Certified Fresh by Rotten Tomatoes. “A Ghostbuster team worth calling,” wrote critic Leonard Maltin. “This one’s a comedic win.” But no one told moviegoers, who pummeled the film with a fury that made little sense then or now.
Leslie Jones revealed that her participation in the movie even earned her death threats. “I can’t believe anyone would do this shit to someone, anyone, for working,” she wrote in her memoir. “This is awful. I am in a movie. Death threats for something as small as that?”
Ghostbusters director Paul Feig believes he knows who was responsible for all the vitriol. “The political climate of the time was really weird, with Hillary Clinton running for office in 2016,” he told The Guardian. “There were a lot of dudes looking for a fight.

Garrett Morris, Saturday Night Live (SNL)’s first Black cast member, appeared on the show from 1975 to 1980 and was best known for his portrayal of the fictional Dominican baseball player Chico Escuela. However, it was his role as Stan Winters on the first three seasons of Martin Lawrence’s self-titled ‘90s sitcom Martin that made a lasting impression on Lamorne Morris, who portrays Garrett in Saturday Night, the Jason Reitman-directed story behind the debut episode of the NBC sketch comedy set for theatrical release in New York and Los Angeles on Sept. 27., and nationwide on Oct. 11. “Whenever you see someone on TV, if you’re an up-and-coming actor, it seems like an impossible task,” Morris tells The Hollywood Reporter. “Martin, in particular, he’s a master of characters. Paul Feig partly blames Donald Trump for the backlash against his female-led 'Ghostbusters' movie. The 62-year-old filmmaker directed the 2016 reboot - which starred Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones - against the backdrop of a "really weird" political climate, which he thinks helped fuel the racist and sexist criticism the film faced. He told The Guardian newspaper: “The political climate of the time was really weird, with Hillary Clinton running for office in 2016.“There were a lot of dudes looking for a fight. When I was getting piled on, on Twitter, I’d go back and see who they were. So many were Trump supporters.“Then Trump came out against us. He was like, “They’re remaking Indiana Jones without Harrison Ford. You can’t do that. And now they’re making Ghostbusters with only women. What’s going on?” and got all upset.“Everybody went f****** cannibal.

Paul Feig, director of 2016’s all-female reboot of Ghostbusters, partly blames Donald Trump for the racist and sexist criticism the movie received from online trolls.
During a recent interview with The Guardian, the filmmaker looked back at all the hate the action-comedy, starring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones, faced following its debut.
“The political climate of the time was really weird, with Hillary Clinton running for office in 2016,” he recalled. “There were a lot of dudes looking for a fight. When I was getting piled on, on Twitter, I’d go back and see who they were. So many were Trump supporters.”
It didn’t stop there, as Feig said Trump, who went on to become the U.S. president, only added fuel to the fire with his rhetoric.
“Then Trump came out against us,” the Jackpot! director said. “He was like, “They’re remaking Indiana Jones without Harrison Ford.

Paul Feig never intended to make “who you gonna call?” such a politically-charged question.
The Emmy-nominated writer and director explained that he made his 2016 female-led Ghostbusters reboot as it would have “felt weird” to continue with only part of the original cast after star Bill Murray publicly shot down the idea of a sequel.
“It had been 30 years and Bill and the gang were so iconic; I didn’t want to do anything that hurt the original movies,” Feig told The Guardian.
The reboot stars Kristen Wiig as physicist Erin Gilbert and Melissa McCarthy as paranormal researcher Abby Yates, who reunite years after trying to prove that ghosts exist in modern society. When strange apparitions pop up in Manhattan, they turn to engineer Jillian Holtzmann (Kate McKinnon) and lifelong New Yorker Patty Tolan (Leslie Jones) for help.

Paul Feig said in a new interview with The Guardian that a lot of the vitriol he faced online during the release of his female “Ghostbusters” reboot in summer 2016 stemmed from supporters of Donald Trump, who infamously called out the reboot in a video post. The film starred Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones as the eponymous paranormal investigators.
“The political climate of the time was really weird, with Hillary Clinton running for office in 2016,” Feig said. “There were a lot of dudes looking for a fight. He was like: ‘They’re remaking Indiana Jones without Harrison Ford. You can’t do that. And now they’re making ‘Ghostbusters’ with only women. What’s going on?’ and got all upset.

Natasha Rothwell has no fear of flying. With stamps on her passport from Turkey to Tokyo, the actress is completely at ease with the wheels up. She gets to the airport well ahead of takeoff (“being early is on time,” she says). On board, she loves a window seat and daydreams while gazing at the clouds. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire got off to a slow start at the box office, but ended up making over $100 million domestically, showing the franchise still has signs of life. Some will say this is the fourth Ghostbusters film, but of course, we all know it’s actually the fifth, as you have to count Paul Feig’s reboot to a certain extent. While critics have been cool on Gil Kenan’s addition to the franchise, fans seem to really be enjoying the film, which gives the Og Ghostbusters enhanced roles. All this got me thinking: what are the best Ghostbusters films? So, I had to do it – here’s my Ghostbusters Movies Ranked list. I’m sure this will inspire a little debate, so let me know what you think of this list in the comments below – even if you hate it. Note that this list is from worst to best.

On October 11, 1975, George Carlin hosted the first Saturday Night Live. Lorne Michaels introduced the show to the masses, and over 50 years later, the series is going strong. It has launched some of the most notable comedians in history, like Eddie Murphy, Will Ferrell, and Tina Fey.
With Lorne Michael getting older, the biggest question is, who could take over for him? We explore the four comedians who we think could take over the popular series and keep it going for generations to come.

When looking over the mass amounts of comedians who have come from Saturday Night Live, it wasn’t easy to narrow the list down to a select few. But when you look at who has been there the longest or who has returned even years after breaking away, the list condenses slightly.

Apple TV+ has ordered the 10-episode horror-comedy series Widow’s Bay from creator, showrunner and executive producer Katie Dippold.
Emmy Award-nominee Hiro Murai is set to direct the pilot and will produce alongside Claudia Shin and Carver Karaszewski.
Widow’s Bay is set on a mysteriously cursed New England island and follows its superstitious citizens, led by a mayor who refuses to believe their warnings.
Dippold was a writer on NBC’s Parks and Recreation before she sold her spec feature The Heat, directed by Paul Feig and starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy. The Heat won an American Comedy Award for Best Comedy Screenplay and a People’s Choice Award for Favorite Comedic Movie. She followed The Heat by co-writing Ghostbusters: Answer The Call, also directed by Paul Feig with Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones starring.

“The Piano Lesson” seems to be hitting all the right Oscar notes.
With Black excellence, impeccable filmmaking, and towering performances, Netflix’s “The Piano Lesson” hit the awards season scene this weekend at the Telluride Film Festival. Debut director Malcolm Washington and stars John David Washington and Danielle Deadwyler were on hand as the film premiered to strong reviews. Given the response and Netflix’s enthusiasm for the project, “The Piano Lesson” could find itself with a best picture nomination.
The latest adaptation from the late playwright August Wilson’s “Century Cycle,” the film is set in 1936 Pittsburgh. It follows the Charles family as they grapple with familial trauma and the (literal) ghosts of their ancestors — it’s a history of violence and cruelty and oppression that are illustrated in the elaborate decorations and designs that have been carved into a piano. And the fate of that family heirloom — whether...

One of the buzziest films of the 2024 Telluride Film Festival has been the upcoming Sony feature based on the first ever live performance of the pop culture staple “Saturday Night Live.” What no one saw coming was that one of the original Not Ready for Prime Time Players, Bill Murray, would introduce the film alongside director Jason Reitman, who were both welcomed with a standing ovation of massively supportive fans and industry insiders.
At 11:30pm on October 11, 1975, a ferocious troupe of young comedians and writers changed television and pop culture forever. “Saturday Night” is based on the true story of what happened behind the scenes in the 90 minutes leading up to the first broadcast of what was originally called “NBC’s Saturday Night” (because a competing show with Howard Cosell had the “Saturday Night Live” title). The buzz heading into the world premiere of “The Piano Lesson” at the Telluride Film Festival suggested that star Danielle Deadwyler will be a serious Oscar threat at next year’s ceremony, with the actress leading in the supporting category in the Gold Derby odds at this early stage of the season. Now that the Malcolm Washington film has screened, expect her front-runner speculation to continue for Deadwyler, who is given several standout moments in the Netflix drama.

Comcast’s NBC Universal drew an average daily audience of 30.6 million viewers during the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris, according to Nielsen data shared by the network on Monday.
The average included NBC’s live and same-day replay coverage of the Opening Ceremony in late July and the Closing Ceremony last Sunday. Specific ratings for the Closing Ceremony were not shared by NBC as of late Monday evening.
The network said its average daily audience — which it reports as the total audience delivery, or Tad — was up 82 percent compared to the 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo, which were delayed one year due to the international coronavirus health pandemic.
NBC extended its prime-time dominance with 152 consecutive nights of Summer Olympics coverage, with most events tape-delayed due to the difference in time zones between the United States and France.

The comically spooky franchise of Ghostbusters has always been greatly cherished by fans, save for the 2016 remake, of course, which nosedived toward destruction, both critically (for the most part) and commercially.
Ghostbusters (2016) | Sony Pictures
But there’s a silver lining, perhaps not for Paul Feig, but most certainly for Rian Johnson and his Star Wars entry.
What Happened to the Revamped Ghostbusters?
Things had not been looking pretty for the paranormal comedy from the get-go. When the very first trailer dropped, it turned social media into a blazing inferno of condemnation in its wake.
While the all-female cast contributed to the film’s fallout – courtesy of a deluge of sexist backlash – the lackluster storyline which seemed to fizzle out with every scene also played a considerable role in Ghostbusters‘ failure.

For the first few decades of Saturday Night Live, breaking out on the show was a ticket to movie stardom for comics like John Belushi, Eddie Murphy, Mike Myers and Will Ferrell. In the 2000s, the path led to Emmy Award-winning comedies for Tina Fey, Amy Poehler and Andy Samberg. In recent years, however, the big reward for a long run on SNL seems to be a job as a game show host.
That payoff isn't quite the same as becoming one of the world's biggest movie stars, but here are seven SNL cast members who got to host quiz shows as a consolation prize…

Fandom for some of the biggest franchises has taken a dark turn in recent years, whether it's the sci-fi saga of "Star Wars" (which saw "The Acolyte" review-bombed), the superheroes of Marvel and DC Comics, or the paranormal phenomenon of "Ghostbusters." But it's the latter film series that might be the top contender for being soaked in the most vitriol, thanks to the innocuous decision to reboot the franchise with *gasp* four women in the lead roles.
"Ghostbusters," which eventually went on to have the more specific title of "Ghostbusters: Answer the Call," was directed by Paul Feig and starred Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones as new characters who gear up to stop a paranormal apocalypse in New York City. Long before the film was released, there was nasty "hate-filled" backlash from chauvinistic fans who couldn't handle four women stepping into the role of scientists turned ghost exterminators.

When Paul Feig rebooted the Ghostbusters franchise in 2016 with a cast led by Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones, no one was prepared for the backlash. “A lot of people have a lot of passionate opinions, and the internet allows them to directly express those opinions to you,” Feig told The Hollywood Reporter in 2022. “It just took me back to grade school and bullies. The bummer is that all we did was try to make a movie to make people laugh.”
In other words, it sucked for everyone involved. “I don’t get the fight to see who can be the most negative and the most hate-filled,” McCarthy told Yahoo! Entertainment five years later. “Everybody should be able to tell the story they want to tell. If you don’t want to see it, you don’t have to see it.”

Almost immediately after its release, the trailer for 2016’s Ghostbusters was one of the most disliked videos on YouTube. And while that hate has subsided – or at least been buried by the disappointments of Afterlife and Frozen Empire – it undoubtedly left a mark on the franchise. But it does still have its defenders here and there; and finding one in one of the Og Ghostbusters is a good get, with Dan Aykroyd continuing to show support.
Aykroyd – who, like the rest of the original surviving Ghostbusters, had a cameo in the 2016 version – remembered having some issues initially behind the scenes but coming around to the movie itself. “I liked the movie Paul Feig made with those spectacular women.
