The writer-star of the 1984 Ghostbusters said it was unlikely he and Bill Murray would return to their iconic roles in the sci-fi comedy franchise.

“I don’t see that coming,” Aykroyd told the New York Post while promoting his History Channel series The UnBelievable With Dan Aykroyd.

The Og Saturday Night Live cast member and Oscar nominee continued, “I don’t see where they would need us to carry it on. They’ve got a whole new cast, and they’ve got whole new ideas.”

Aykroyd, Murray, Ernie Hudson and the late Harold Ramis starred as Manhattan-based paranormal investigators in the 1984 lighthearted action-horror movie, from a script by Aykroyd and Ramis, with Ivan Reitman directing. Also starring Sigourney Weaver and Rick Moranis, the pic became a critical and commercial success, spawning several sequels and reboots, as well as merchandise and a coveted spot in the cultural zeitgeist.

Netflix is well known for its original content, and many of those titles are geared toward families. “I’m really honored to be here today among so many amazing women. Carol Burnett, Amy Adams, Bela Bajaria, what a privilege it is to be standing here alongside you all this evening. I’m constantly in awe of each of you,” Saldaña said in her speech, shouting out her fellow Power of Women honorees. “A woman brought each and every one of us here tonight into this world, and when we get opportunities like this, where we can all come together and rally for each other, there’s truly nothing like it.”

Saldaña — the queen of the box office, whose resume boasts the three highest-grossing films of all time in “Avatar,” “Avengers: Endgame” and “Avatar: The Way of Water” — was feted alongside Adams, Burnett and Netflix’s Bajaria, as well as Variety Courage Award recipient Sarah Hyland.

Two former executives on Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune have accused Sony Pictures of engaging in unlawful race, gender, and age discrimination and retaliation against them.

Shelley Ballance Ellis, a Black woman, and her Latina colleague Monique Diaz have filed complaints with California’s Civil Rights Department and the National Labor Relations Board, alleging that Sony’s management terminated them and other workers in retaliation for collectively opposing harmful discrimination and toxic working conditions on Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune.

The pair have spent close to 50 years combined working on the shows. Ballance Ellis was Executive Director, Licensing and Clearance at Sony Pictures Entertainment, and Diaz also worked in the department. The pair were terminated in April.

With Maya Rudolph returning to portray Democratic presidential candidate Vice President Kamala Harris, its likely that James Austin Johnson will portray Donald Trump and or Joe Biden in parodies of the candidates. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire got off to a slow start at the box office, but ended up making over $100 million domestically, showing the franchise still has signs of life. Some will say this is the fourth Ghostbusters film, but of course, we all know it’s actually the fifth, as you have to count Paul Feig’s reboot to a certain extent. While critics have been cool on Gil Kenan’s addition to the franchise, fans seem to really be enjoying the film, which gives the Og Ghostbusters enhanced roles. Apple TV+ has ordered the 10-episode horror-comedy series Widow’s Bay from creator, showrunner and executive producer Katie Dippold.

Emmy Award-nominee Hiro Murai is set to direct the pilot and will produce alongside Claudia Shin and Carver Karaszewski.

Widow’s Bay is set on a mysteriously cursed New England island and follows its superstitious citizens, led by a mayor who refuses to believe their warnings.

Dippold was a writer on NBC’s Parks and Recreation before she sold her spec feature The Heat, directed by Paul Feig and starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy. The Heat won an American Comedy Award for Best Comedy Screenplay and a People’s Choice Award for Favorite Comedic Movie. She followed The Heat by co-writing Ghostbusters: Answer The Call, also directed by Paul Feig with Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones starring.

With Black excellence, impeccable filmmaking, and towering performances, Netflix’s “The Piano Lesson” hit the awards season scene this weekend at the Telluride Film Festival. The buzz heading into the world premiere of “The Piano Lesson” at the Telluride Film Festival suggested that star Danielle Deadwyler will be a serious Oscar threat at next year’s ceremony, with the actress leading in the supporting category in the Gold Derby odds at this early stage of the season. Following a decorated Broadway revival in 2022, August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning “The Piano Lesson” is getting the feature film treatment this fall at Netflix — and the streamer debuted its first trailer early Wednesday.

From director Malcolm Washington and starring John David Washington, the project costars Samuel L. Jackson (who was Tony-nominated for his turn in the 2022 stage production), Ray Fisher, Michael Potts, Erykah Badu, Skylar Aleece Smith, Jerrika Hinton, Gail Bean, Danielle Deadwyler and Corey Hawkins.

Malcolm Washington cowrote the script with Virgil Williams (Netflix’s “Mudbound”).

Comcast’s NBC Universal drew an average daily audience of 30.6 million viewers during the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris, according to Nielsen data shared by the network on Monday.

The average included NBC’s live and same-day replay coverage of the Opening Ceremony in late July and the Closing Ceremony last Sunday. Specific ratings for the Closing Ceremony were not shared by NBC as of late Monday evening.

The network said its average daily audience — which it reports as the total audience delivery, or Tad — was up 82 percent compared to the 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo, which were delayed one year due to the international coronavirus health pandemic.

NBC extended its prime-time dominance with 152 consecutive nights of Summer Olympics coverage, with most events tape-delayed due to the difference in time zones between the United States and France.

The comically spooky franchise of Ghostbusters has always been greatly cherished by fans, save for the 2016 remake, of course, which nosedived toward destruction, both critically (for the most part) and commercially.

But there’s a silver lining, perhaps not for Paul Feig, but most certainly for Rian Johnson and his Star Wars entry.

What Happened to the Revamped Ghostbusters?

Things had not been looking pretty for the paranormal comedy from the get-go. When the very first trailer dropped, it turned social media into a blazing inferno of condemnation in its wake.

While the all-female cast contributed to the film’s fallout – courtesy of a deluge of sexist backlash – the lackluster storyline which seemed to fizzle out with every scene also played a considerable role in Ghostbusters‘ failure.

Fandom for some of the biggest franchises has taken a dark turn in recent years, whether it's the sci-fi saga of "Star Wars" (which saw "The Acolyte" review-bombed), the superheroes of Marvel and DC Comics, or the paranormal phenomenon of "Ghostbusters." But it's the latter film series that might be the top contender for being soaked in the most vitriol, thanks to the innocuous decision to reboot the franchise with *gasp* four women in the lead roles. 

"Ghostbusters," which eventually went on to have the more specific title of "Ghostbusters: Answer the Call," was directed by Paul Feig and starred Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones as new characters who gear up to stop a paranormal apocalypse in New York City. Long before the film was released, there was nasty "hate-filled" backlash from chauvinistic fans who couldn't handle four women stepping into the role of scientists turned ghost exterminators.

When Paul Feig rebooted the Ghostbusters franchise in 2016 with a cast led by Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones, no one was prepared for the backlash. “A lot of people have a lot of passionate opinions, and the internet allows them to directly express those opinions to you,” Feig told The Hollywood Reporter in 2022. “It just took me back to grade school and bullies. The bummer is that all we did was try to make a movie to make people laugh.”

In other words, it sucked for everyone involved. “I don’t get the fight to see who can be the most negative and the most hate-filled,” McCarthy told Yahoo! Entertainment five years later. “Everybody should be able to tell the story they want to tell. If you don’t want to see it, you don’t have to see it.”

The original “Ghostbusters” actor and screenwriter of the 1984 film told People that while he was “mad” at the 2016 production at the time, he is “proud” of the franchise installment — despite the film being a commercial and critical flop.

Dan Aykroyd, one of the original Ghostbusters, is defending 2016’s all-female reboot of Ghostbusters, which was met with racist and sexist criticism from online trolls following its debut.

The actor and screenwriter, who starred as Dr. Ray Stantz in the 1984 movie as well as penned the script, opened up in a recent interview with People about his appreciation for the entire franchise, including the Paul Feig-directed installment starring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones.

“I liked the movie Paul Feig made with those spectacular women,” Aykroyd said. “I was mad at them at the time because I was supposed to be a producer on there and I didn’t do my job and I didn’t argue about costs. And it cost perhaps more than it should, and they all do. All these movies do.”

“But boy, I liked that film,” the Saturday Night Live alum continued.

“American Dad!” is finally getting its own soundtrack. The show’s cast and producers revealed on Saturday at San Diego Comic-Con that an album featuring between 12 to 14 of the series’ most memorable songs (such as “Daddy’s Gone” and “When I Dress My Body”) will be released on streaming services including Spotify and Apple Music, timed to the premiere of the next season on TBS
