A fourth Bridget Jones film is on the way, and some returning faces as well as new famous ones have joined the latest installment in the rom-com franchise.

Renée Zellweger, who first brought the titular character to life in Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001) will return to reprise her role in the film. The news of the fourth film first arrived in April 2024, and a cast has been rounded out. Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy is the working title for the upcoming film.

Renee Zellweger is back as Bridget Jones in Mad About The Boy, and here’s the trailer for the new film.

The long awaited fourth film is called Mad About The Boy, adapted from Fielding’s 2013 novel of the same name, and it’s now far away at all. As well as a returning Renee Zellweger, the cast also includes Isla Fisher, Josette Simon, Nico Parker and Leila Farzad.

Michael Morris directed the film from a screenplay by Fielding, with contributions from screenwriters Abi Morgan and Dan Mazer.

Bridget Jones is back.

On Tuesday, Peacock released the first trailer for “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy,” the fourth film in the long-running romantic comedy series and the first since “Bridget Jones’s Baby” in 2016.

Things are different this time for Jones, and not just because this is the first film in the franchise that will bypass theaters entirely. As revealed in the “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy” trailer, Jones’s husband, Mark Darcy (Colin Firth), has died, leaving Jones a widowed mother of two young children. Things move apace from there, with several of her friends – including former flame Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant) – suggesting Jones get back out there to reconnect with other potential mates, including a young man played by Leo Woodall (“The White Lotus”) and a more age-appropriate match in the form of a science teacher played by Chiwetel Ejiofor.

The fourth instalment in the UK-set romantic comedy series seesRenee Zellweger return to her titular role. This time around, she’s a widowed mother of two who decides to start dating again.

Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy going direct to streaming is only the second biggest sequel development revealed Tuesday.

Peacock has announced that the fourth installment in the Renée Zellweger film franchise will bypass theaters in the United States. Following an international theatrical release on Wednesday, Feb. 12, the sequel will land Stateside on Thursday, Feb. 13, where it will stream exclusively on Peacock.

The first trailer for Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy has been released, and Renée Zellweger’s Bridget is still looking for love as she comes to terms with the tragedy of losing Mark Darcy (Colin Firth). Yep, you read that correctly, Darcy is no more and the trailer serves up the bad news straight away.

Still, the only way is up for our Bridget as she gets on with life, and the prospect of not one but two possible romances. There’s the hunky and age-appropriate Mr. Wallaker (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a teacher at Bridget’s children’s school and the wild card of Roxster (Leo Woodall), the youthful bit of rough that should be a red flag.

Sony Pictures Classics’ Wicked Little Letters grossed an estimated $1.5+ million in a big second week expansion for the R-rated British period comedy to 1,000 screens from five. The Thea Sharrock-directed film starring Olivia Colman (also a producer) and Jessie Buckley, no. 8 at the domestic weekend box office, has a $1.6+ million cume.

Colman and Buckley have been out actively promoting the film, based on an actual scandal, about a police investigation into the anonymous author of crude letters sent to the residents of a British seaside town.

The number is on the high end of SPC’s expectations, and the Sunday estimate may be conservative.

Any wider comment on the strange, sad nature of the scandal this film is based on is sidestepped in favour of broad laughs and superficiality

Unconvincing, unfunny and bafflingly heavy-handed, this shrill non-comedy fails to say anything entertaining or historically insightful about the true story of the Littlehampton poison-pen scandal of 1923. It’s a terrible waste of a stellar cast, headed by Olivia Colman, although the simple aggregation of everyone’s acting talent does raise the film a bit.

Colman plays Edith Swan, a prim-and-proper spinster in the curtain-twitching world of 1920s Littlehampton, always congratulating herself on her Christian rectitude; she lives with grumpy elderly dad (Timothy Spall) and glowering mum (Gemma Jones). The film is directed by Thea Sharrock (Me Before You) from a screenplay by Jonny Sweet (Greed). Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley co-star in the period comedy-drama which world premiered at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival.

Delivering some late deal-making momentum to the American Film Market, Sony Pictures Classics snatched up North America and China distribution rights to the British black comedy mystery film Wicked Little Letters, starring Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley.

Sony acquired the rights from StudioCanal and will release the film theatrically in 2024.

Directed by Thea Sharrock (Me Before You) from a screenplay by Jonny Sweet (Greed), Wicked Little Letters is based on a true scandal that stunned 1920s England. The story centers on neighbors Edith Swan (Colman) and rowdy Irish migrant Rose Gooding (Buckley) in the seaside town of Littlehampton. One day, a series of obscene letters begin to target Edith and others, and when suspicion falls on Rose, the women of the town suspect something is amiss and decide to investigate.

The letters trickled in at first, and then they flooded the community. Nearly every resident of Littlehampton, a small coastal town in England, received an offensive note in 1920. Most of the libelous messages haven’t survived, but the ones that did display a dexterity with foul-mouthed language. They are a window into a different time — a rare look, in the words of historian Christopher Hilliard, at the “tangles of devotion and resentment, desire and manipulation” concealed under a working-class neighborhood’s genteel demeanor.

Mystery, tension, gossip and humor defined the Littlehampton scandal, but you wouldn’t be able to tell from Thea Sharrock’s odd screen translation. Wicked Little Letters, which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival, takes a one-note farcical approach to this slice of history, a peculiar move that deserts its formidable cast and squanders its thrilling premise.

It is brought to life in a new comedy designed as a star vehicle for actors Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley. The Oscar-nominated duo gives spirited performances in a diverting little trifle that isn’t especially illuminating but is an undemanding watch.

The BBC’s controversial Jimmy Savile drama The Reckoning will be handed its long-awaited premiere in the autumn, while it has unveiled more cast and a first-look image.

For her third feature film, Thea Sharrock lassoed powerhouses in Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley along with Anjana Vasan, Timothy Spall, Joanna Scanlan, Hugh Skinner, Malachi Kirby, Gemma Jones, Lolly Adefope, Eileen Atkins and Alisha Weir to essentially play a game of clue. It was a great night for Charlotte Wells' father-daughter drama Aftersun at the British Independent Film Awards on Sunday evening, as the film—– already a favourite going into the evening after 16 nominations, won seven, including Best British Independent Film, Best Director and Best Screenplay.

Other films scoring several awards included Blue Jean, and The Origin, about a nomadic tribe that faces a terrifying ancient threat that comes when night falls.

The BIFAs continued non-gender-specific main performances categories and added one, the Joint Lead Performance, awarded to Tamara Lawrance and Letitia Wright for their roles as extraordinary real-life siblings who communicated only with each other in The Silent Twins.

Charlotte Wells’ directorial feature debut, “Aftersun,” took home the most awards of any nominated film at the 25th annual British Independent Film Awards (BIFA), nabbing seven victories out of 16 nominations.

The film spans a 20-year period, beginning with 11-year-old Sophie (Frankie Corio) on a father-daughter vacation to Turkey and culminating with her reflection on that experience in adulthood. Upon its premiere at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, “Aftersun” was winner of the French Touch Jury Prize. Most recently, Wells received a breakthrough director prize at the Gotham Awards.

At the Sunday evening ceremony, “Normal People” actor Daisy Edgar-Jones presented the award for best British independent film to Wells. Also added to the feature’s list of accolades were awards for best director, best debut director, best screenplay, best cinematography, best editing and best music supervision.

Scottish filmmaker Charlotte Wells’s acclaimed debut feature Aftersun swept the board, snagging seven wins at the British Independent Film Awards (BIFA) in London this evening.

This evening’s four wins were added to the film’s previously announced haul in the craft categories with three wins including Best Cinematography, Best Editing, and Best Music Supervision.

Georgia Oakley’s 1980s Section 28 era set Blue Jean, which trailed only Aftersun for the most nominations, picked up three awards on the night: Best Lead Performance for Rosy McEwen, Best Supporting Performance for Kerrie Hayes, and Oakley took home the Best Debut Screenwriter award sponsored by Film4.
