Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale

Driven by his curiosity regarding a supposed archeological excavation located on a mountain near his remote rural home, young and adventurous Pietari stumbles upon the shocking, ugly truth about the being known the world over as Santa Claus. Local legend suggests the jolly old man in the red suit was in reality a supernatural creature that, rather than rewarding children for being good, severely punished those who were naughty. When a large herd of reindeer on which Pietari’s father depends for his livelihood is found slaughtered, the townsfolk suspect it is the work of hungry wolves that have crossed into the area from the nearby slopes. But when all the local children mysteriously disappear overnight, Pietari fears the scientists...

Chicago – “What you are about to see now may traumatize you for life.” So reads a warning near the beginning of Finnish filmmaker Jalmari Helander’s 2005 short, “Rare Exports: The Official Safety Instructions.” The film was a clever follow-up to his 2003 effort, “Rare Exports Inc.”, which seemed to milk its one-joke premise for all it was worth.

The “exports” of Helander’s films are in the form of bloodthirsty Father Christmases hunted and tamed by reindeer herders near Korvatunturi mountain, which the film bills as the “land of the original Santa Claus.” Who are these gray-haired, unclothed, rawly animalistic creatures? Why are they filled with such fearsome rage when a nearby mortal mildly misbehaves? In the side-splitting yet genuinely eerie “Safety Instructions,” these alleged “Father Christmases” seemed to be little more than elderly zombies.

In a nod to Hans Christian Andersen's sinister fairy-tales and 80s children's adventure flicks, Finnish film-maker Jalmari Helander's first feature, Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale, is released just in time for the festive season.

It's 24 days to Christmas and the livelihoods of a small mountainside community in Lapland are suffering – the reindeer they slaughter and sell have all been massacred. Seeking an answer, an angry group cross over into an excavation site and find more than they bargained for. It seems Korvatunturi mountain is some kind of giant ice box. Pietari, the son of one of these reindeer farmers, believes the original Santa Claus has been dug up.

Soon strange things start to happen in the community – all the radiators are torn off the walls, a hair dryer is stolen and a farmer has all his potatoes emptied from their sacks. Pietari's father finds a peculiar naked...

The programme for Saturday 30th October has been announced – and boy is it great!
