In 1973, he starred in an unsold television pilot based on his TV movie, The 500 Pound Jerk (1973). The comedy included scenes from the telefilm as well as new footage which told the story of the American weightlifter and the Russian gymnast adjusting to life in the U.S. following the Olympics.

Played for the Iowa Hawkeyes and played opposite Alan Alda as "Hawkeye Pierce" on M*A*S*H (1972).
