Not to be confused with Charles Kaufman’s horror-thriller of the same name – nor its forgettable remake from 2010 – Open Road Films has unveiled the first trailer for Garry Marshall’s imminent romantic comedy, Mother’s Day.

Spinning a yarn around the titular holiday in the same vein as the director’s other themed efforts – namely Valentine’s Day and the much-maligned New Year’s Eve – Mother’s Day places a laser focus on the core cast of Jennifer Aniston, Kate Hudson, Jason Sudeikis and Julia Roberts, rather than spreading a wafer-thin narrative across a massive ensemble. That said, Marshall’s latest – written by Anya Kochoff-Romano and Lily Hollander – still orbits around a series of overlapping stories set against the holiday occasion.

When three young women take a trip into the country to get away from the hectic city life they find themselves taking a wrong turn straight into the hands of a strange family run by Mother (Beatrice Pons). Keeping the women captive Mother instructs her sons Ike (Fredrick Coffin) and Addley (Michael McCleery) to practice situations for her to criticise wherein they attack their victims for her amusement. When the girls escape though and decide to get revenge, mother soon finds the tables are turned against her.

Mother’s Day is interesting, especially with its connection to Troma. Directed by Charles Kaufman the brother of Lloyd there is a recognisable Troma style on display, but less hectic and if anything somewhat more mature.

Earlier this summer we reported that 88 Films will be releasing Graduation Day and Mother’s Day to Blu-ray in the UK, and now 1981′s Don’t Go in the Woods… Alone will also be given the UK high-definition treatment. Together, these three releases make up the first wave of 88 Films’ Slasher Classics Collection, and the documentary, Scream Queens: Horror Heroines Exposed!, has been included on Graduation Day‘s special features.

Graduation Day will hit Blu-ray in the UK on October 13th, while Mother’s Day will be available in the high-definition format sometime in early 2015. In the late 1970′s Lloyd Kaufman, who would become known for his own gross-out horror/comedy films, produced Mother’s Day for his brother Charles. Revered as a classic of its kind, and era, it’s got a nasty mix of uneasy comedy, low rent special effects, and a genuinely creepy concept that make it much better than it has any right to be.

Three ex-college roommates set off for an annual surprise get together. Each year, one of them chooses an activity that the others aren’t aware of and for this particular year, they are venturing into the pine barrens of New Jersey. As is required of films of this type, the trip is anything but relaxing. Not long into their vacation, they’re kidnapped by two men and gifted to their mother for some “family fun”.

Now that Darren Lynn Bousman's redo of Mother's Day has hit the States, it's time to revisit the original cult classic.

Troma's Mother's Day is going to hit Blu-ray for the first time courtesy of Anchor Bay Entertainment on September 4th. Originally released by Troma Entertainment in 1980, directed by Charles Kaufman and written by Kaufman and Warren Leight, the original Mother’s Day follows three young women abducted by homicidal momma’s boys Ike and Addley, while camping. Ike and Addley are goaded by their “Mother” into violent and graphic acts of torture against the three women. While doing everything to stay alive, the three women muster the courage escape, and serve their maniacal abductors some old-fashioned justice.

Talk about hanging around. It feels like I’ve been covering Darren Bousman’s “Mother’s Day” remake for years now, possibly decades. It’s only been two years, but let’s face it, if you wanted to see this movie, you would have found ways to see it by now. Last year, director Darren Lynn Bousman had his timely horror film 11-11-11 chased out of theaters just as quickly as it came by bigger releases like The Immortals and Jack & Jill (though I can't imagine the film being much worse than either of them). Finally we have a release date for the Darren Lynn Bousman remake of Mother’s Day acquired by Anchor Bay. Looks like the shelf date will be May 8th which is fitting because the actual holiday is the following Sunday. Horror fans will finally get a chance to see the cult classic remake after it had a limited run at certain theaters and an on-demand release. The film stars Rebecca DeMornay, Jamie King, Brianna Evigan, Patrick John Flueger, True Blood's Deborah Ann Woll, The Grey's Frank Grillo, Lyriq Bent and Frozen's Shawn Ashmore.

The announcement, which includes rights North American rights, was made by Bill Clark, President of Anchor Bay Entertainment.
