12 years before the debut of Is It Wrong To Pick Up Girls In a Dungeon? (or DanMachi), J.C.Staff won the hearts of anime fans with another harem fantasy called Maburaho. Now, the elusive early 2000s hit has returned to streaming in a surprise release.
On June 3, X (formerly Twitter) user @Wtk spotlighted Crunchyroll's acquisition of Maburaho, which until recently was not available to stream in the U.S. on any official subscription service. While it is available to purchase on DVD, English-dubbed copies of the series are relatively rare and often exorbitantly priced. The 22-year-old harem series was added to Crunchyroll's anime catalog around the same time as D.N.Angel, another hit IP from Japanese multimedia conglomerate, Kadokawa Shoten. Maburaho, which consists of 24 episodes, initially aired from October 2003 to April 2004.

From the moment it premiered, Dandadan invaded minds while also probing the general discourse in the anime fandom. With Science Saru's over-the-top visuals, and the balance between its absurd humor and heartfelt character stories, Dandadan's success is no surprise. It had all the right elements that cemented it as the anime to watch. At its core, it's nothing more than a coming-of-age story and a slow-burn romance between two high school students. Yet, pair that with the supernatural chaos that ensues in every episode, and the result is more powerful than the main character's family jewels.
Despite its success and popularity, Dandadan isn't the first anime to experiment with tonal shifts and bizarre storytelling. In fact, Sarazanmai, an underrated anime from 2019, did it first. Unfortunately, it never got the recognition it deserved. Most anime fans flocked to series like Demon Slayer, The Promised Neverland, and My Hero Academia, that were released around that time.

The isekai genre is an ever-growing category of anime that has new series added to its already overwhelming list of fantasy heroes and wayward villainesses with every season. The core concept of isekai—escaping into a magical realm—is a popular and highly appealing basis for a story, but with so many series following the same formula and tropes, the charm of the genre itself can lose its luster.
There does occasionally come an isekai anime with a premise or protagonist that strays from what is typically seen and even subverts the common isekai anime tropes in new and interesting ways, offering a fresh take on an overused theme. Among the hundreds of titles that follow the same isekai recipe, there are a handful of series that have spiced up their stories with something unique to create a compelling tale well worth the pickiest anime fan's time.

Welcome, readers, to Late to the Party , a column that's right on time when it comes to catching up on anime everyone's already watched. This column addresses a universal truth in regard to being an anime fan: an anime backlog is quite the powerful beast. Many of us have one, where we amass more and more content we have designated in the "planning to watch" category. How and why it takes so long to actually address this task varies from person to person, but the gratification of finally allocating the time is really quite splendid. Occasionally, it’s by watching a classic anime from yesteryear that you’ve had your eye on for quite some time. In other instances, it’s a more recent premiere that just slipped by. This month, I wanted to cover some very fatherly territory. For one thing, in Australia, Father’s Day is celebrated on the first Sunday of September.
