German director Mehmet Akif Büyükatalay’s Hysteria has been awarded the Europa Cinemas Label for Best European Film in the Panorama section at the 75th Berlin International Film Festival.
The behind-the-scene conspiracy thriller follows the drama on a German film shoot, a production about real-life arson attacks on a Turkish family by German skinheads, that kicks off when a copy of the Quran is burnt on set. That kicks off a cleverly plotted whodunit that also examines the issue of who benefits from fictionalizing real-world violence. “Imagine Knives Out meets François Truffaut’s Day for Night, but set in a present-day Germany rife with tensions about immigration and Islam,” The Hollywood Reporter critic Jordan Mintzer said in a rave review.
The Europa Cinemas jury—comprising Klaudia Elsässer (Art+ Cinema, Hungary), David Kelly (Light House Cinema, Ireland), Constanze Oedl (Stadtkino im Künstlerhaus, Austria), and Cenk Sezgin (Cinemarine Cinemas, Turkey)—praised Büyükatalay...

Notorious former UK government spin doctor Alastair Campbell was pondering legal action against the BBC 20 years ago over its reporting of the controversies surrounding the Iraq War.
News stories have been emerging this week about the premiership of former Prime Minister Tony Blair, who Campbell advised, due to the release of archived documents under the UK’s 20-year rule.
In one letter, Campbell wrote to Blair stating: “If the BBC remain belligerent, I think the rhetoric has to be stepped up, up to and including the threat of putting the issue in the hands of lawyers.” The threat went no further, as events took over the situation.
Campbell, who now hosts the hit Rest is Politics podcast, had been setting out the ruling Labour Party’s PR operation to handle the Iraq War, which was being met with stiff opposition.

Exclusive: Nicole Kidman hadn’t figured on taking an acting role in the latest entry in the Taylor Sheridan universe, Special Ops: Lioness. Then she got hooked.
“I’ve never done this,” the Oscar- and Emmy-winning star told me. “It was espionage and action,“ which was new territory for her, she explained.
Initially, Kidman had signed on as a producer, having been persuaded to do so by Chris McCarthy, president & CEO Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios and Paramount Media Networks, and David Glasser, CEO and co-founder of 101 Studios. They’re both in the Taylor Sheridan business, having ushered in Yellowstone, 1883, 1923 and a host of other shows for Paramount+.
Then she and Sheridan talked, then talked some more. Kidman’s an admirer of the script Sheridan penned for David Mackenzie’s beautifully realized film Hell or High Water.

If you weren’t at London’s High Court for Prince Harry’s cross-examination — and the reams of media reports detailing the royal’s responses line by line weren’t enough — don’t worry: Sky News has you covered.
The broadcaster has revealed plans to reconstruct key parts of Harry’s cross-examination on Tuesday with Mirror Group Newspapers lawyer Andrew Green Kc.
In a series of special programs this week, reporter Jonathan Samuels will present “Harry in Court,” where an actor will voice significant moments from the prince’s turn in the witness box.
With no cameras or recording allowed in court, Sky News says it will “give audiences an accurate and fair representation of what has happened in court that day, offering greater insight into how a huge case like this unfolds.”
The news outlet last employed reconstructions in 2005 during Michael Jackson’s high-profile criminal trial on charges of child molestation.

Charlotte Moore, chief content officer at the BBC, has defended the decision of screenwriter Steven Knight, best known for “Peaky Blinders,” to spice up Charles Dickens’ “Great Expectations” in his television adaptation, now airing on the British broadcaster, and streaming on Hulu in the U.S.
Referring to a sadomasochism scene in the show, in which a naked Mr. Pumblechook (played by Matt Berry) is seen being whipped by housewife-turned-dominatrix Mrs. Gargery (played by Hayley Squires), Moore said that Knight “believes absolutely everything [in the show] comes from what was alluded to” by Dickens in the novel.
Moore, speaking Thursday to the Broadcasting Press Guild in London, added that “you have to really understanding what [Dickens] would have felt able to write about [in the Victorian era] and read between the lines.”
Another of Knight’s embellishments in the show is that Miss Havisham, played by Olivia Colman, is portrayed as a sadistic opium addict.

It’s time for a new episode of the Best Horror Movie You Never Saw video series – and this one looks back at a “cheesy zombie movie” that I consider to be one of the most purely entertaining films ever made, 1988’s FleshEater (get it Here). To find out all about FleshEater, check out the video embedded above!
FleshEater was directed by Bill Hinzman, who played the Cemetery Ghoul – the first flesh-eating zombie ever to grace the screen – in George A. Romero’s classic Night of the Living Dead. Hinzman also wrote the screenplay with Bill Randolph, crafting the following story:
Just when you thought the dead were buried… Experience your most dreadful nightmare become reality as an innocent outdoor sleepover becomes an endless night of sheer terror! Eddie and eight of his friends planned to spend one night on Spencer’s farm. What they hadn’t planned on was...

As JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon warns of an economic “hurricane” headed this way, most media and entertainment companies have yet to take cover. Dimon’s prediction, made during a June 1 analyst conference, comes as inflation remains high, the war in Ukraine pressures global commodities and the Federal Reserve appears poised to keep raising interest rates. While the U.S. added 390,000 jobs in May, according to the latest jobs report, that strength might further the Fed’s plans to hike rates in order to keep inflation under control and in doing so, maybe create a recession.
Asked about the potential of a slowdown at recent analyst conferences, company executives have largely dismissed the impact, with movie theater chain Cinemark holding to the position of being in a recession-proof industry and executives from video game publisher Take-Two Interactive acknowledging the possibility of a broader...

Exclusive: Stephen King adaptation Mr. Mercedes will be back for a ten-episode second season on August 22, At&T Audience Network told Deadline during the show’s panel at The Contenders Emmys. Director Jack Bender joined stars Brendan Gleeson, Harry Treadaway, Kelly Lynch and Holland Taylor to discuss the series’ first run.
Speaking with Deadline’s Joe Utichi, Bender offered his first impressions of Mr. Mercedes. “When Stephen first sent me the galleys, I was thrilled,” the director said. “He had never written a detective novel, and I found it fascinating that Stephen was writing this time about the monsters inside the people, as opposed to the monsters outside the people.”
Not getting into specific details about Season 2, the cast instead discussed the complexities of the series’ characters, including a deranged serial killer (Treadaway) and the detective (Gleeson) who is set on bringing him down.
For Gleeson, what was so compelling about Mr.

Comic book movies are Matthew Vaughn's speciality. Between Kick-Ass, X-Men: First Class and the Kingsman franchise, he's been a constant and eclectic presence as these films have boomed, and if reports are to be believed, his next film could be about either Flash Gordon or Superman.
But going back even further than Mark Millar or Marvel, Vaughn's first comic book movie was his adaptation of Neil Gaiman's Stardust, which arrived in UK cinemas ten years ago this week. We consider the controversies surrounding BBC Two's sumptuous Wolf Hall adaptation, feat. Damian Lewis, Mark Rylance and Claire Foy...
2015’s roster of prestige dramas is particularly dense, but the BBC’s take on Hilary Mantel’s Wolf Hall might just have already claimed its crown as the most controversial. It arrived freighted with the baggage always attached to adaptations of acclaimed novels, and further burdened by some thorny controversies all of its own. Mantel’s spirited attack on philosopher-saint Thomas More and equally fervent defence of his nemesis and her hero, Thomas Cromwell, was always bound to ignite debate. That, of course, is before we even touch on the subject of that rogue c-word and the choice to film night-time scenes by candlelight. We want accuracy, but only on our terms; when it jars with our perceptions of the past, out it goes.

Gene Wilder has criticised Tim Burton's 2005 film version of author Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Wilder famously played the title character in a previous well-loved Dahl adaptation titled Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, which became a cult classic years after its 1971 release.
The 80-year-old actor was making a public appearance for Turner Classic Movies on Thursday (June 13), when he expressed his dissatisfaction with Burton's 2005 film.
"I think it's an insult. It's probably [distributor] Warner Bros' insult," The Wrap quotes Wilder as saying.
Wilder apparently then went on to reveal that he is not a fan of Burton as a director.
"Johnny Depp [who played Willy Wonka], I think, is a good actor, but I don't care for that director," he commented, adding: "He's a talented man, but I don't care for him doing stuff like he did."

Matilda, with a book by David Kelly, music and lyrics by Tim Minchin, is based on the popular children's novel by Roald Dahl. After a brief run in Stratford-upon-Avon in late 2010, it opened in London in November, 2011, going on to win seven Olivier awards, including best musical. In simple terms, Matilda tells the story of a five-year-old girl who loves to read, and, with the help of a supportive teacher, overcomes a dysfunctional, nasty family and obstacles at school to find happiness.
It is always exciting to be in a theater for a preview performance of what is anticipated to be a hit musical; when that new musical has the pedigree of hit status and reviews in London (which was also true of Billy Elliot, a show I loved), the energy level can be even higher. That is how it felt recently at the Shubert Theatre, waiting for the beginning of Matilda.

Irish stage and screen character actor who appeared in Barbarella, The Verdict and the BBC's 1969 sitcom Me Mammy
For a performer of such fame and versatility, the distinguished Irish character actor Milo O'Shea, who has died aged 86, is not associated with any role in particular, or indeed any clutch of them. He was chiefly associated with his own expressive dark eyes, bushy eyebrows, outstanding mimetic talents and distinctive Dublin brogue.
His impish presence irradiated countless fine movies – including Joseph Strick's Ulysses (1967), Roger Vadim's Barbarella (1968) and Sidney Lumet's The Verdict (1982) – and many top-drawer American television series, from Cheers, The Golden Girls and Frasier, right through to The West Wing (2003-04), in which he played the chief justice Roy Ashland.

Today is Saint Patrick’s Day, a day to celebrate all things Irish, a day when real Irishmen and women hide in their homes while Amateur Irishmen take to the streets and the pubs. It’s a day when the city of Chicago – no lie – dyes the mouth of the Chicago River green… or even greener than usual. Given that this year Saint Paddy’s day occurs on a Sunday, I suspect that the celebration has been going on since at least Friday and may well last into next Thursday what with the whiskey and the beer and the general all around vomiting. Ah, glorious!
Since we’re celebrating things that are Irish, I’ll be mentioning some of me own favorite Irish films. You may have different ones and I’ll drink to those as well (it’s a day for it) but these are my particular favorites.
The Quiet Man
Classic.
