The guilds, British Academy (BAFTA) and critics have all had their say. We're now four days from the 87th annual Academy Awards, so it's time to finally analyze the race for the wins. Most categories are fairly predictable, but there are some wildcards. While I expect "The Grand Budapest Hotel" to take more than its share of craft categories, with "American Sniper" and possibly "Birdman" doing well, too, it's fair to say we won't be seeing a year like last year, where "Gravity" took six of 10 categories, and "The Great Gatsby" took two more. More interesting is what I suspect will be a trend of repeat Oscar winners. I'm guessing the winners in most categories (Cinematography, Costume Design, Makeup and Hairstyling, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing and Visual Effects) will have already thanked the Academy before. While most of these winners would be deserving, several big names will still be waiting for their first statuettes.

We're right in the middle of the blockbuster movie season. Some think it's been a lackluster summer slate. I haven't had major expectations for much of anything so I guess I'm okay with merely being satisfied so far, but with Guillermo del Toro's massive-scale "Pacific Rim" hitting theaters this coming weekend, it seems now would be a nice opportunity to look at the race for Best Visual Effects. This and the other crafts fields will of course be thoroughly covered later in the year when Gerard Kennedy dusts off his "Tech Support" series of columns. Just looking at what we've seen...

As we push on through the final week of the 2012-2013 film awards season, here's a look back at our chats with the lucky artists who heard their names called on January 10. We ended up talking to an even 50 Oscar nominees throughout the season, with every single feature category represented. Some came before the nominations were announced, some came after, when this or that person was bathing in the afterglow of the recognition. The interviews were conducted by yours truly, Guy Lodge, Gerard Kennedy, Greg Ellwood, Drew McWeeny, Dan Fienberg, and even our music mavens, Melinda Newman and Katie Hasty....

Melbourne, Oct 22 – The condition of sexsomnia, the bizarre act of having sex while asleep, could be genetic, according to evidence found by an Australian researcher.
Gerard Kennedy, an associate professor in psychology at Victoria University, who studied four sexsomnics in 16 years, has found an unusual case of a father-son duo.
‘This could be the first case in the world where we can see it runs in families,’ he was quoted as saying by The Sydney Morning Herald. Kennedy will present the case at the Australasian Sleep Conference in Christchurch Saturday.
He said, in both men, the sex started.

DiCocco new Ontario culture minister
TORONTO -- Ontario Premiere Dalton McGuinty on Wednesday named Caroline DiCocco as the new culture minister, replacing Madeleine Meilleur, who was promoted to minister of community and social services. Meilleur had held the cultural portfolio since 2003, overseeing Canada's largest domestic film and TV production market in Toronto and southern Ontario. DiCocco's entry into the Ontario cabinet came as provincial education minister Gerard Kennedy announced he was exiting Ontario politics to take a run at succeeding federal Liberal leader Paul Martin.
