Dark-haired, smoky-voiced German character actor, who began as a singing child star. He was best known internationally for his role as East German 'Stasi' goon Hermann Gromek, killed dramatically by Paul Newman in Alfred Hitchcock's thriller Torn Curtain (1966).

Conscripted into the German Army in World War II, he was captured and became a Russian POW until 1949.

Worked and lived alternately in East and West Germany during the 1950's and 60's.
