Can Cannes Help California Get Its Groove Back?
Image
As you walk up The Croisette toward the Palais, there’s a long, winding series of tents overlooking the yachts anchored in the Bay of Cannes. Atop each tent is a flag representing the country that hopes to impress the producers, financiers and executives gathering at Cannes on the hunt for locations (and most importantly, financial incentives) for their next projects.

Near the end of these tents is the American Pavilion, which historically has been a place for the world’s biggest exporter of entertainment to meet with international guests, and for individual U.S. states to tout their tax incentives and facilities.

New York had its own dedicated day in the early 2000s, but never before had California made a concerted effort to court the Cannes crowd. After all, Los Angeles has long been the most influential city on earth when it comes to entertainment, an entire town built...

Davis Guggenheim Talks ‘Deaf President Now!’: ‘It’s an Injustice That the Story Has Not Been Told’
Image
In “Deaf President Now!” directors Nyle Dimarco and Oscar winner Davis Guggenheim recount eight tumultuous days in 1988 at Washington, DC’s Gallaudet University – the only Deaf university in the U.S. At the time students were protesting after the school’s board of trustees appointed a hearing president over several very qualified Deaf candidates. In the University’s 124-year history, Gallaudet had never been led by a Deaf person despite growing sentiment from the community that it was time for a Deaf leader.

For the documentary, Dimarco, a Deaf actor-advocate, and Guggenheim interviewed the four Gallaudet graduates – Greg Hlibok, Jerry Covell, Bridgetta Bourne-Firl, and Tim Rarus – who were responsible for organizing the week-long movement that consisted of rallies, boycotts and protests. In the film, the foursome describe events in their own words, which are signed on-screen and spoken aloud by unseen actors. Told primarily through American Sign Language, intermixed with...

Liberal Documentarians Panic as Industry Goes Trump-Friendly, but Conservatives Say ‘They’re Getting a Taste’ of Censorship and It’s ‘Satisfying’
Image
Eight years ago, tech billionaire Jeff Skoll clapped enthusiastically as Al Gore assuaged the opening-night Sundance crowd just hours before Donald Trump was sworn in as the 45th president. “We will win,” Gore said after the Skoll-backed climate change documentary “An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power” made its world premiere. “We want this movie to recruit others.”

But a funny thing happened over the ensuing years. The founder and chair of Participant Media appears to have defected to the other side. In January, on the weekend Trump was sworn in as the 47th president, Skoll hosted both the Make America Great Again Victory Rally and the inaugural parade, sending shockwaves through the indie film world. (Skoll declined comment.)

For the past two decades, the eBay mogul was the most reliable financier of progressive documentaries, from “Rbg” to “He Named Me Malala.” Skoll’s 180-degree turn as he shuttered Participant...

Apple Lands ‘Deaf President Now!’ Doc From Nyle Dimarco, Davis Guggenheim (Exclusive)
Image
Apple Films has landed the feature doc Deaf President Now! from Deaf actor, filmmaker, and advocate Nyle Dimarco and Oscar-winning documentarian Davis Guggenheim.

The feature tells the story of the 1988 protests at Gallaudet University, the storied university for Deaf or Hard of Hearing students, that led to the installment of the school’s first Deaf president, Dr. I. King Jordan.

The doc features exclusive interviews with Jordan, as well as the “Gallaudet Four” — Jerry Covell, Bridgetta Bourne-Firl, Tim Rarus and Greg Hlibok, who took leadership positions during the protests. Deaf President Now! also incorporates an experimental narrative approach — called “Deaf Point Of View” — using impressionistic visual photography and intricate sound design that is meant to thrust the audience into the Deaf experience.

“For far too long, the disabilities stories that have shaped the United States have been conspicuously absent from the history we tell,” said Dimarco. “This film not only...

Black Sheep 2 Will Begin Filming in 2025
Image
Fans of cult classic New Zealand horror Black Sheep will be surprised to discover the bonkers gore-fest is officially getting a sequel after almost 20 years. According to Deadline, original director and star Jonathan King and Nathan Meister, respectively, are returning for more of the horror-comedy that answered the question of what would happen if a bunch of sheep turned into bloodthirsty creatures long before The Boys offered up their take on the idea.

For those unfamiliar with the original, Black Sheep took the idea of genetic experiments gone wrong and added a touch of low-budget absurdity into the mix. The end result was a movie that followed Henry Oldfield (Meister), who, while dealing with his phobia-level fear of sheep, becomes caught up in a horrifying nightmare of the wooly kind. What begins as odd behavior among the flocks very quickly becomes something more sinister as the sheep population takes a...

Cult Classic Horror-Comedy About Killer Sheep Is Getting a Sequel 18 Years Later
Image
The horror genre has expanded in the last few decades. The scary films are divided into different subgenres, including comedy horror, body horror, slashers, supernatural horror, and psychological horror, among others. In 2006, a New Zealand horror comedy put animals at the core of its terror.

Black Sheep, which follows a killer sheep, has since become a cult classic. Because of its ever-growing popularity and positive reviews, the film is moving forward with a sequel 18 years later, Deadline announced. The good side is that many people involved in the original will return to work on the sequel, as well.

Back in 2006, writer/director Jonathan King brought us the “nature run amok” horror comedy Black Sheep, about killer, genetically altered sheep. King is returning to the helm for the sequel, working from a script he crafted with Matthew Grainger and Rosie Howells.

Black Sheep had the following synopsis: Sheep-fearing Henry (Nathan Meister) returns to his brother’s (Peter Feeney) New Zealand farm, hoping his sibling will buy out his share of the property. However, what he finds are genetically altered sheep that prey on humans and turn their victims into undead, woolly killers. Shear madness ensues as Henry, an animal-rights activist (Danielle Mason) and a farmhand (Tammy Davis) set out to stop the rampaging animals. Meister will be reprising...

Fithian Group To Launch Digital Marketplace Connecting Indie Filmmakers And Exhibitors
Image
The Fithian Group, launched last fall by longtime NATO chief John Fithian, has developed a data-driven, digital theatrical distribution marketplace it hopes will revolutionize how independent filmmakers and rights-holders book and release movies in theaters.

An early version of the platform, called Attend, rolls out Stateside in the first quarter of 2025. The U.S. and Australia will be initial markets.

Dozens of filmmakers and producers from Sean Baker to Steven Soderbergh Patty Jenkins and Ted Hope are supporting the concept, signing on to an Attend statement “that modern, democratic, data-driven marketplace providing an efficient and effective way to distribute all genres of film directly to theatres and audiences is a vital need for our industry and art form.”

Powered by entertainment tech firm Vista Group, the marketplace allows filmmakers to upload details and materials for their films directly onto the platform. Exhibitors can search the database, and Attend recommends movies.

The Ex NATO Chief Has a New Online Marketplace Meant to Cut Out the Film-Distribution Middleman
Image
The former leader of theater-owner’s group NATO has a new way to get your independent film into movie theaters — one intended to cut out the middleman.

John Fithian is launching an online marketplace to connect filmmakers directly with exhibitors. The platform is called “Attend,” and it puts the “intelligence” into its artificial intelligence. Attend’s tech, powered by the Vista Group, pairs filmmakers with the specific theaters best suited to their movie. For exhibitors, Attend is a portal to a broader range of content. This way, filmmakers retain the rights to their movie, and exhibitors keep control over their screens.

Sorry about all of that, distributors.

A filmmaker uploads details about (and assets from) their films directly into Attend, including metadata and other specifics. The platform’s AI will match the movie with theaters based on their customer data, local demographics, and affinity groups.

Attend will launch an alpha phase in the U.

American filmmaker Nicole Holofcener is relaxed. Her legs are crossed in the yoga pose and she reclines into a large armchair with a glass of white wine perched on the side.

“I’m out of practice talking about my films, especially the older ones,” she joked. “I’ll try to remember them.”

We’re in the Czech Republic at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival where Holofcener is set to be honored this week with a career retrospective. The festival will screen three Holofcener titles, Please Give, Enough Said, and 2023’s You Hurt My Feelings. The stalwart indie filmmaker will also host an onstage Q&a about her work.

Holofcener has clocked seven features across her decades-long career, all of which explore similar themes — white middle-class families on the coasts, messy relationships, and troubled artists — with a razor-sharp consistency rarely found in Hollywood today. Holofcener has also lent her hand to television,...

‘Oppenheimer’ Wins Best Film at BAFTA Awards (Complete Winners List)
Image
The stars and artists behind the biggest films of 2023 descended on London this weekend for the BAFTA Film Awards. British film’s biggest night is often seen as the best predictor of Oscar momentum before the Academy Awards and the results often mirror each other.

If that’s the case this year, it will be all “Oppenheimer” all the time. Universal’s Christopher Nolan epic took home many of the night’s biggest categories, winning the top prize of Best Film along with Best Director for Nolan, Leading Actor for Cillian Murphy, and Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr. The film also picked up major craft wins for Cinematography, Editing, and Original Score.

While the dominant showing makes an “Oppenheimer” Oscar sweep seem even more likely, Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things” won for Costume Design, Makeup & Hair, Production Design, and Visual Effects, and star Emma Stone won Leading Actress for her...

Oppenheimer continues with its awards season domination, picking up 13 2024 Ee BAFTA Film Awards nominations. BAFTA also found a lot to admire in Poor Things, nominating it 11 times in categories including Best Film and Leading Actress (Emma Stone).

Killers of the Flower Moon and The Zone of Interest received nine nominations, followed by Anatomy of a Fall, The Holdovers, and Maestro with seven. All of Us Strangers was nominated in six categories, and Barbie and Saltburn received five nominations.

“The 38 films nominated by BAFTA voters today span an extraordinary range of genres and stories. The field this year is incredibly strong. The BAFTA nominations have been announced with Oppenheimer and Poor Things leading the way
Image
Awards season continues. For a year with a lot of notable box office anomalies, the award recognitions are stacked with popular choices. The Golden Globes kicked things off, and then the SAG Awards and Critics Choice Awards started to show audiences who are seen as the favorites to win this year. Then, the Emmys threw a spotlight on the achievements made in television this past year, and now the list for the 2024 BAFTAs have been announced.

As seen in the previous awards ceremonies, Oppenheimer and Poor Things lead the charge in nominations. Christopher Nolan’s atomic bomb film is a stunning achievement for the director as he is known to put out summer films that straddle the line of prestigious awards movies, and Oppenheimer is finally cracking through with nominations for his actors’ performances, as well as his directing and screenwriting. Emma Stone has also been the favorite this year with Poor Things,...
