Every few years, CBS dusts off a minute-long animated holiday greeting that first ran in 1966. Now, more than 50 years later, it’s unveiling several new animated shorts that were inspired by that original spot.
Renowned for its graphic art design, the vintage greeting was designed by illustrator/animator R.O. Blechman (The New Yorker, “The Soldier’s Tale,” “Sesame Street,” Alka-Seltzer ads) and produced by animator Willis Pyle (“Pinocchio,” “Bambi,” “Mr. Magoo”). Because it’s a minute long (the standard back then, but unheard of now, as commercials are stripped to as quick as six seconds), CBS doesn’t have the opportunity to run it often.

I can’t even begin to recount the endless number of film, TV and stage projects that have tried to bring Charles Dickens’ immortal yuletide classic A Christmas Carol to life. From Alastair Sim’s textbook portrayal to the likes of Bill Murray, Jim Carrey, Albert Finney, the Muppets and even Mr. Magoo, you might think you’ve seen it all, but now along comes a complete original and a breath of fresh air to the saga of Ebeneezer Scrooge and the ghosts of Christmas Past…...

And now for something silly. I was discussing films with a friend, as happens, and we started talking about obscure horror films. And my friend mentioned that over in Germany, director Oliver Krekel actually made a sequel of sorts to The Fog. So I looked it up, and lo-and-behold: it exists and is called Fog²: Revenge of the Executed (see the title-shot above). Now I haven't seen the film so I won't comment on its qualities, but it did automatically shift the subject to sequel titles. Because within seconds, we had come up with: Fog³: Fog Harder Fog the World Fog Five: What the Fog Fog Six: Mist Chances Sequel titles. We all know some cringe-worthy ones. Some are straightforward, some try to be funny,...

Here is an image to cherish: Guillermo del Toro, as a young boy, “watching a TV series on the floor, on my belly, with a glass of milk and a plate of cookies.” It represents more than just a pleasant memory for the director when it comes to “Trollhunters,” the new animated series he co-created for Dreamworks and Netflix. In crafting the story of Jim (played by Anton Yelchin, who tragically passed away earlier this year), a young man who gets chosen by a mystical amulet to serve as protector of a hidden troll kingdom, del Toro hopes to capture the spirit of the shows he grew up watching, including classic adventure series like “Jonny Quest.”

The International trailer is now online for "Eddie the Eagle" based on the Olympic skier Eddie starring Hugh Jackman, Taron Egerton and Timothy Spall.
Edwards became a national hero by becoming the first competitor to represent Great Britain in Olympic ski jumping during the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary. He was a particular dark horse to achieve this placement, since he had no funding and his farsightedness forced him to wear glasses under his goggles, making him virtually blind during the jumps. The press nicknamed Edwards “Mr. Magoo,” and even though he placed last in the 70m and 90m ski-jumping events, he was hailed as a heroic failure.
Check out the trailer below.
"Eddie the Eagle" is set to hit theaters on February 26, 2016.

Tinker, Tailer, Soldier, Spoof: Gerber & Pozdorovkin Indulge Bout
You probably know him by his wildly exaggerated media coined title, the ‘Merchant of Death’, or you might even remember Nicolas Cage’s war mongering Hollywood fictionalization of the man in Lord of War, but the real life Viktor Bout, though undeniably complicit in the black market arms trade, may have been more a business savvy buffoon than the master of ballistics he’s thought to be. Collaborating for the first time, directors Tony Gerber and Maxim Pozdorovkin paint a very different picture of the man than we are used to seeing. Harvesting a wealth of hilarious and humanizing home movies shot by Bout himself and his wife, Alla, the filmmakers reveal a man not obsessed with weaponry nor money, but one whose joy springs from time spent with his adoring network of family and friends, as well as from the simple pleasures of tourism,...

The first Marvel trailer of 2015 is here! That didn’t take very long. So sit back, or actually sit forward, and get ready to squint like Mr. Magoo at the teaser trailer for “Ant-Man.” Nice trolling there, guys. But you can never stop the signal. Enhance! Okay, let’s break down this glorious, blurry nonsense. #1 - Paul Rudd aka Scott Lang aka Ant-Man is walking with park rangers and/or state troopers. Probably the latter. #2 - Anyone want to hazard a guess what waterfront and skyline that is? #3 - Evangeline Lilly aka Hope van Dyne is entering a blue lit room. Probably her dad’s underground lair. #4 - Michael Douglas aka Hank Pym aka Former Ant-Man™ turns on the lights to said underground lair. #5 - Dudes in suits. Walking with purpose. Movie logic implies they are villains. #6 - Big blue explosion. Perhaps flashback to the reason why Wasp is Mia?...

Toshi feels emboldened these days, and he's getting a bit ahead of himself. After he saw "The Terminator," he spent an afternoon going through my Blu-ray shelves and moving things around. It always makes me laugh when he leaves because I can see exactly what he's been thinking about. He's got a bunch of R-rated movies on his mind, and for the vast majority of them, he's out of his mind. No way. Not for years still. But there are some films that are going to sneak into the rotation, and this year, I was given a very clear mandate for one of the weekends the boys spent here: Christmas movies only. The boys were in a particularly rowdy mood when we got together, and at the end of the day, I told the boys they were going to get a double-feature if they got totally ready for bed before the movies.

Animated Christmas specials have become traditional to American holiday celebrations, ever since they first began airing in 1970s. Stop-motion productions like Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer and Santa Claus is Comin' to Town became instant classics, and have since been aired in marathons and special segments on TV for decades, and become an integral part of many families' Christmas festivities.
Here are the Top 5 animated Christmas Specials you don't want to miss this holiday season.
Santa Claus is Comin' to Town
One of the earliest animated specials produced by Rankin/Bass, Santa Claus is Comin' to Town follows the origins of the world's greatest toy giver, from his infancy to his childhood raised by a group of toy makers, and even to how he met Mrs. Claus and reindeer gained the ability to fly. Fast National ratings for Friday, December 19, 2014. While NBC's "Caught on Camera with Nick Cannon" was unimpressive, a two-hour installment of "Dateline" did well enough to push the network to Friday night victory in most measures. Over on CBS, the season finale for "The Amazing Race" rose against reduced competition, but a dismal performance from the "A Home For The Holidays" special took the network out of the running for any Friday wins. And even in a repeat, ABC's "Shark Tank" tied for Friday's best numbers among young viewers. On to the ratings... Among adults 18-49, NBC averaged a 1.2 rating for Friday night, edging out ABC's 1.1 rating to win the key demographic. CBS was third with a 0.8 key demo rating, followed by Fox's 0.5 key demo rating. The CW averaged a 0.3 key demo rating for the night. Overall, NBC averaged an estimated 6.04 million viewers and a 3.9 rating/7 share for Sunday primetime, beating...

When the “Every Simpsons Ever” mega-marathon of The Simpsons began last Thursday on Fxx, it renewed interest in a show that will go down as one of the all-time greats—but has nevertheless been struggling commercially and creatively for awhile at this point. The show’s unimpeachable heyday in the ’90s is rightfully heralded, and as the marathon got going, it was those episodes that created the most excitement. Sure, they’ve been out on DVD for some time, but rebroadcasting them in order emphasized how great the show was at its peak.

The new animated feature Mr. Peabody & Sherman has been a long time coming. Not just in that the characters were first introduced on television 55 years ago but also in that director Rob Minkoff (The Lion King) has been developing it for 12 years. Eventually it was made at Dreamworks Animation, which has since acquired the company that owns these and other classic cartoon characters. Basically, the next movie attempted from a property like Peabody's Improbable History should be a little easier and maybe a lot faster. Classic Media was the name of the acquired library of characters and brands, now renamed DreamWorks Classics, and among its holdings and licensing rights are Mr. Peabody and Sherman's old show mates Rocky and Bullwinkle, as well as Mr. Magoo,...

Aaron Taylor-Johnson has been hovering around the role of Quicksilver in The Avengers: Age of Ultron since July, but yesterday came the official confirmation we’ve all been expecting for roughly half a year. The Wrap has the big news, along with the reason why such a super-speedy character was cast at a Mr. Magoo-like rate. It seems that Taylor-Johnson had already been booked up for some time with his Godzilla publicity tour, and it’s taken some time to ensure the actor will be able to both join the Avengers and tell the world how he was almost stepped on by a giant lizard. Elizabeth Olsen, strangely enough, is also a part of Godzilla and Age of Ultron, yet according to Samuel L. Jackson she was good to go a month ago without all these negotiating dilly-dallies. But now it’s all been worked out, and including Jackson’s slip about Olsen as Scarlet Witch...

Appearing at Mipcom 2013 in Cannes this week, DreamWorks Animation head Jeffrey Katzenberg says that he intends to fully exploit last year's acquisition of the Classic Media character library by Dwa.

It’s not, ‘What are we going to do with those 6,100 episodes we have’ … although we’ll get value out of those … the real opportunity is to take every one of those franchises and reinvent them. And that’s what we will set out to do."

It's a documentary, baby!
The last time we saw -- well, heard -- Mike Myers was in "Shrek Forever After," and now the "Austin Powers" funnyman is set to tap into his serious side for his first time behind the camera. His next project will be directing the documentary "Supermensch," about legendary manager Shep Gordon.
One of Gordon's most colorful clients (and friends) is so-called shock rocker Alice Cooper, who has since mostly given up his grease paint for golf clubs. In a roundabout way, Cooper is how Myers and Gordon met, as the actor turned to the manager for the rights to use Cooper's song "Feed My Frankenstein" in "Wayne's World," when Wayne and Garth attend an Alice Cooper show. Here's a clip to refresh your memory:

Day by day, Netflix continues to movie away from content provider to full on broadcast company, and they show no signs of slowing down. With "House Of Cards," "Hemlock Grove" and "Arrested Development" already out of their original programming gate in 2013, with "Orange Is The New Black" coming next month, the company has now inked another deal that will find even more exclusive shows on their site. We hope your local internet provider is ordering up some new servers. Netflix and DreamWorks Animation are partnering for 300 hours of material exclusive to the streaming site, and it will be a mix of old and new properties. Last year, DreamWorks bought the rights to the Classic Media catalog, which includes uh, classic characters like Casper the Friendly Ghost, Lassie, She-Ra and Mr. Magoo. On the other end of the spectrum, there are also planned spin-offs and shows "inspired" by DreamWorks success like "Shrek" and "The Croods.

That was a pretty super weekend for Superman. Man of Steel opened in theaters, and took in $125 million in its first few days of business. That’s leaps and bounds better than what happened exactly 30 years ago today on June 17, 1983 when the crime-fighting alien suffered his darkest hour. I’m speaking, of course, about the release of Superman III, which is not only the worst Superman movie, but could also be considered the worst threequel, and arguably the worst superhero movie of all-time (although the 1990 version of Captain America with Ned Beatty might have something to say about that).

Creator Scott W. Perry tells Fango, “After the success of the first season, we’re moving forward with a bigger slate of movies with more talented filmmakers to come. Ten episodes are confirmed, and we hope to fill the season with 12 in total.”
The first batch of In Fear Of entries, currently visible on YouTube, range from “Monophobia: Fear of Being Alone” to “Achluophobia: Fear of the Dark.” Pictured here are Jeremiah Kipp’s “Scotomaphobia: Fear of Blindness” (pictured right and in two photos below) and Perry’s own “Gerontophobia: Fear of Aging.” “Scotomaphobia,” Perry tells us, “stars Susan Adriensen as Emily, a woman whose downward spiral of addiction in her life coincides with her increasing loss of vision.”
Kipp elaborates: “Our main character is going blind, so imagine an episode of Mr. Magoo where our blurry-eyed protagonist is bumping lines of coke, having shrieking booze-fueled confrontations, putting herself in...

Previously on Chicago Fire everything was unicorns and rainbows in celebration of Shay doing what Cat McKenzie couldn’t and living through getting hit by a truck while gay. Severide asked for help, Shay moved back in with him, and Mills and Dawson played doctor.
We pick up where we left off last week, with Gabriela Dawson. She’s waking up in bed and Mills is missing. She panics, not because he’s gone but because she wants to double check that she’s just as smoking hot as she was the night before. Yep still insanely gorgeous.
She pops out of bed and puts on one of those absurd mishmash of clothes that you would only see during sorority hazing but totally works in a “I just got laid and can’t think about anything at all” kind of way. I’ll just be over...

Each week, host Jeff Probst answers a few questions about the most recent episode of Survivor: Philippines.
Entertainment Weekly: Let’s get right into Russell’s tirade after losing the immunity challenge. He went on about how he always expects success. That mirrors the mindset of a lot of athletes who say you need to have that type of thought process to succeed. But when that expected success doesn’t come, it can get ugly. Is that type of attitude an asset or a liability in this game?

Each week, host Jeff Probst answers a few questions about the most recent episode of Survivor: Philippines.
Entertainment Weekly: So Angie and Russell were arguing at Tribal Council about which of their performances at the challenge was weaker: her not being able to get a piece that was submerged only two feet, or him not being able to climb out of the water and then later coming back without a piece at all. You were there: Which player hurt their tribe more in that one?
Jeff Probst: In that particular moment, it’s probably a push. Both failed. It happens.

Morgan Freeman (The Dark Knight Rises) and Elizabeth Banks (The Hunger Games) have been cast as voices in Warner Bros’ new Lego movie, Lego: The Piece of Resistance.
Chris Pratt (Parks and Recreation) would be voicing the main character, the Caped Crusader while Channing Tatum, in mind for Lego Superman and Lego Batman might not be on board with his 21 Jump Street directors’ newest project.
Variety’s Jeff Sneider also tweeted that Freeman will voice a character play a blind sage described as Gandalf meets Mr. Magoo, and Banks will play Pratt’s bad-ass ex-girlfriend.
Set to be written and directed by 21 Jump Street duo Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, 3D animated movie, which is an 80/20 blend of animation/live-action, centers on Emmet (Pratt), an ‘instruction worker’ who is mistaken for the Master Builder. The Lego crew them embarks on a quest to prevent an evil tyrant from gluing the universe together.

The producers of the new Lego film, Lego: The Piece of Resistance, have certainly nabbed an A-list cast. Academy Award winner Morgan Freeman and The Hunger Games star Elizabeth Banks have sgned on for the upcoming animated action/adventure comedy from the directors of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and 21 Jump Street. Banks' currently unnamed character will play the "badass ex-girlfriend" of another unnamed character played by Chris Pratt, but Freeman's character will be named "Vitruvius", described as a cross between "Gandalf meets Mr. Magoo".
Freeman and Banks join Pratt in an unnamed role and Will Arnett as the voice of Lego Batman. Although previously reported as up for the role, Channing Tatum will not be the voice of Lego Superman in the film. The plot revolves around... "an ordinary Lego mini-figure, mistakenly thought to be the extraordinary MasterBuilder, is recruited to join a quest to stop an evil...

Lego: The Piece of Resistance is, appropriately, assembling itself at a careful pace. Two months after some big names flew in, Deadline reports that Morgan Freeman and Elizabeth Banks have been signed and put in league with Chris Pratt and Will Arnett; Channing Tatum, the directing duo’s 21 Jump Street star, was once in the running to voice Superman, yet some have indicated that he’s moved on. It simply wasn’t meant to be, but we still expect those other two — no bad choices themselves — to voice the main protagonist and Batman, respectively.
Morgan Freeman isn’t done with The Dark Knight, then. He’ll be voicing Vitruvius, an amalgamation of Gandalf and Mr. Magoo (no idea how that might work), while Banks is the “bad-ass ex-[girlfriend]” to Pratt‘s character, an ordinary citizen named Emmet who is presumed to be “the most extraordinary MasterBuilder.” Because of this, freedom...

Fortunately, sites like Kickstarter now allow that kind of promotion to happen in a matter of days, which seem to have been the case with Agent 88. An avalanche of audience interest in the past week has sent the web series about an aged assassin snowballing towards its projected production goal. It’s the little series that could, continually revving its martial arts-fueled engine of comic book style awesomeness.
A month ago, it was difficult to get a project like Agent 88 off the ground, with its edgy concept and distinct tongue-in-cheek approach to assassination.

Dreamworks Animation (Shrek, How to Train Your Dragon) just bought out Classic Media for $155 million and have now called the company Dreamworks Classic. So what did Classic Media do or have that calls for such a grand number? Well glad you asked, Classic Media was a animation/production/distribution company that had collected the rights to a lot of old kid properties. Now that Dreamworks bought them out they now have the rights (not all of them complete) to the following...(takes deep breath)

Robin Hood: Ghosts of Sherwood tells the story of Robin Hood from the horror perspective. The film will contain a lot of the same characters from the original story, but now Sherwood Forest is haunted with the undead Merry Men. By the way the film will be in digital 3D no less. The film is directed by Oliver Krekel and stars Tom Savini as the Sheriff of Nottingham, Kane Hodder as Little John along with Tom Paladin Bareck, Carolina Grigorov, Kai Borchardt and Martin Hentschel.

He robbed from the rich and gave to the poor. Now he’s going to eat the rich and maybe even the poor while he’s at it. That’s because in Robin Hood: Ghosts of Sherwood, he and his Merry Men are undead and haunting their famous forest. And it’s not a Syfy movie, either.
Here’s the synopsis for Oliver Krekel’s Robin Hood: Ghosts of Sherwood:
This is the fictitious tale of a cursed Robin Hood who has sold his soul to a witch to stay alive. But death never sleeps, and soon Robin dies in a battle. When Marian and Little John try to bring Robin and his Merry Men back to life by using the witch's potions, they unfortunately turn the dead to the living dead.
With the use of the potions that Marian took from the witch’s cave, she and Little John...

How different would Scarface be if Tony Montana had a lust for blood instead of coke? Or, what if a clan of vampires made their own crime family? Wouldn’t that be an awesome movie? Vampires and gangsters seem like a perfect match. They both enjoy secrecy, violence and power. How hard would it be to mix some blood and money into that equation? Maybe a little harder than you might think…

Three years after their first collaboration—and the director’s debut film—Steve McQueen and star Michael Fassbender return with the viscerally intense Shame. To call a movie assured to receive an Nc-17 rating more mainstream than their previous Hunger is insane, but it’s true. Whereas that film took a more formal approach to the medium, leaving us in a visually stunning world without introducing the lead character until about a third of the way in, Shame definitely has more of a narrative voice. With that said, however, McQueen’s improved aesthetic style has remained. Utilizing the same masterful strokes of mise en scène, he transports us into Brandon’s (Fassbender) unstable existence. The juxtaposition of confident smirk on the prowl with vulnerable lost soul unable to overcome addiction resonates through the long takes, over-powering score, and in-your-face imagery. Combining to form a gut-punch of emotion, this film sends...

Last week I did a piece on how early syndication of movies to TV provided a culturally unifying base for Baby Boomers. Most of us, however, probably think of syndication as being less about movies and more about recycling old TV shows. And, in time, so it became.
TV writer/producer/director Bill Persky remembers syndication being a movie-driven business in the medium’s early years since “…there weren’t that many series to syndicate…” By the 60s, however, TV production companies had amassed enough defunct TV shows to turn syndication into an increasingly profitable series-recycling business feeding a bottomless market. Independent stations filled their days with a patchwork quilt of old TV shows, old movies, local news and sports, and even network affiliates had hours to fill between blocks of network programming.
The recycling of old TV shows had the same impact on Boomers recycling old movies did; it...

A new telling of the Robin Hood rags to riches tale is being told at Cannes '11. Instead of tights and English accents, you will find skulls and lifelike 3D, in Robin Hood: Ghosts of Sherwood. There is no current release date for this title in North America, but you can experience some gothic thrills here, with the film's first imposing graphic. Make-up artist and actor Tom Savini (Dawn of the Dead) will play a ruthless Sheriff of Nottingham and some more exciting cast announcements await you inside.
