- Upon the death of Olivia de Havilland in July 2020, Kuhn became the last surviving credited cast member of Gone with the Wind (1939).

- In April 2006, Kuhn was an honored guest at the SunDeis Film Festival at Brandeis University. He gave a lecture on his work in Hollywood and later joined Jesse L. Martin, S. Epatha Merkerson, Margaret O'Brien, Celeste Holm, and others as presenters of student film awards.
- Presented with the Golden Boot Award in 2005 honoring the Kids of the West.
- He has appeared in four films that have been selected for the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically or aesthetically" significant: Gone with the Wind (1939), A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (1945), Red River (1948), & A Streetcar Named Desire (1951).
