10 Twilight Zone Episodes With Predictable Twists
Image
TheTwilight Zone ran for 156 episodes during its original run from 1959 to 1964, and produced a number of classic entries that helped make it one of the greatest shows in television history. That often hinged on its anthology format, which allowed the best of them to deliver their signature ironic twists with devastating effectiveness. Conversely, if an episode didn't work, the show could simply move on to the next story without worrying about any lingering aftereffects. That makes it easy to overlook entries that struggled with their concept, or which couldn't come together with the elegance and power of something like "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet."

The category includes a number of episodes where the surprise ending advertises itself far too soon and too openly. Not all of them fail, making up for their predictability with clever writing and performances. However, all of them illustrate just how difficult it was to properly deliver a curveball twist.

Every Twilight Zone Christmas Episode
Image
The Twilight Zone has a collection of Christmas episodes that range from creepy and philosophical to heartwarming and festive. Episodes like "What You Need" and "A Passage for Trumpet" explore themes of fate and gratitude, delivering messages perfect for the Christmas season. "The Changing of the Guard" and "The Star" touch on redemption and religious themes, making them some of the best Christmas episodes of The Twilight Zone.

The Twilight Zone is one of the most iconic and spooky television series ever produced, but it still took the time to spread some holiday cheer with several Christmas and festive-themed episodes. The Twilight Zone is a forerunner to many similar anthology shows like Tales from the Crypt, Amazing Stories, and Black Mirror. The Twilight Zone even left its mark on the Christmas genre, but instead of always spreading holiday cheer, the show usually maintained its unique blend of existentialism, philosophy, and social commentary.

Cabinet Of Curiosities: Graveyard Rats Ending Explained (In Detail)
Image
Contains spoilers for Cabinet of Curiosities: Episode 2 "Graveyard Rats"Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities episode 2, "Graveyard Rats," is a devastating warning against the excesses of human greed with a suitably hellish ending. This installment, directed by Vincenzo Natali, is based on the Henry Kuttner short story "The Graveyard Rats" and tells of a destitute and desperate grave robber named Masson (David Hewlett). Like the Nick Appleton character in Cabinet of Curiosities' "Lot 36" episode, Masson struggles to make ends meet and owes large sums of money to an unknown criminal third party.

When the death of a wealthy shipping merchant presents Masson with what he thinks is a lucky break, he follows some rats into their warrens beneath the graveyard in search of the aristocrat's sword. The pursuit leads him to encounter his darkest fears and uncover a sinister secret lurking beneath the town of Salem, as he...

How Guillermo Del Toro's Cabinet Of Curiosities Built That Terrifying Rat Queen
Image
Guillermo del Toro's "Cabinet of Curiosities" is full of strange, freaky, and delightful treasures. The Netflix anthology series boasts a treasure trove of horrors that range from the otherworldly and Lovecraftian to the deceptively mundane. But for fans of practical effects, one of the cabinet's residents stands tail and shoulders above the rest: the Rat Queen.

The Rat Queen makes her grand entrance in the appropriately named episode "Graveyard Rats," which is directed by Vincenzo Natali ("Splice") and stars David Hewlett as a grave robber trapped in a cycle of bad luck. Hewlett's Masson is in bad shape by the time he meets the Rat Queen, downtrodden and seemingly doomed to never get the money he needs. Also, he's plagued by rats for much of the episode's runtime. Lots and lots of rats. Needless to say, this is an episode of TV you should skip if you're afraid of the creatures.

Ranking the Best Cabinet of Curiosities Episodes
Guillermo del Toro at an event for Splice (2009)
The thing about anthology series is that they inevitably invite comparison. Why would you present me with several distinct stories if you didn’t want me to rank them all from worst to best? Though that just might a me thing.

In any case, new Netflix horror anthology Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities presents eight unconnected tales of terror for viewers to experience. Even the folks behind the series understand that the diversity of options presented means that audiences will prefer some to others.

“With anthologies, I think it just comes down to what your taste is,” Cabinet producer J. Miles Dale tells Den of Geek. “With this show I think there’s something for everybody – whether it’s a director’s vision, or the material, or the setting, or the actors, or the dialog, or the scares. Unlike a continuing series, you can do it in bite-sized pieces.

Crispin Glover Interview: Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities

Crispin Glover is back with another off-kilter character in Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities. Starring in the episode "Pickman's Model," the actor stars as the titular artist with a dark past whose art contains a terrifying secret within, of which Ben Barnes' Will Thurber finds himself attracted to.

Helmed by The Vigil's Keith Thomas, "Pickman's Model" is one of eight stories collected in Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities alongside fellow H.P. Lovecraft adaptation "Dreams in the Witch House," and other tales by Henry Kuttner, Emily Carroll, del Toro himself, and more. Blending terrifying visuals with mind-bending storytelling, "Pickman's Model" proves another worthy adaptation of a Lovecraft story.

For horror fans, Halloween isn’t just a holiday – it’s a state of mind. I recently listed some of the new and upcoming horror movies to keep watch for – both this month and the weeks and months to follow – and it’s about time we did the same for TV series as well.

October brought us some excellent new and returning horror shows to networks and streamers, from a new season of Chucky to some chilling premieres like Interview with the Vampire, and there are still plenty more rolling out in the coming weeks. But right now, I’m going to focus on six new horror series that are coming your way soon...

What You Need To Watch (And Read) Before Guillermo Del Toro's Cabinet Of Curiosities
Image
Like most hardcore horror fans, Guillermo del Toro loves a good anthology series. From "The Twilight Zone" to "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark," which del Toro produced, the notion of getting a completely different tale of terror each week is too tantalizing to resist. So genre fans should be giddily anticipating the October 25, 2022, Netflix premiere of "Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities," which boasts eight episodes of spine-tingling fright from some of the most talented horror directors working today.

In the newly released teaser, del Toro promises, "Each of the episodes has a whole world." Though he is presenting the series, he has given all eight directors free rein to tell their stories on their own creative terms. Perhaps the most exciting element of the series is its focus on the construction of "beautiful, practical creatures." In an industry where CG dominates, it's an absolute joy to hear...

50 forgotten sci-fi films from the 1990s
We may remember Independence Day, The Matrix, The Phantom Menace. But what about these forgotten 90s sci-fi films? And are any worth seeing?

Think back to the science fiction cinema of the 1990s, and some of the decade's biggest box-office hits will immediately spring to mind: The Phantom Menace, Jurassic Park, Independence Day, Men In Black, Armageddon and Terminator 2 were all in the top 20 most lucrative films of the era.

But what about the sci-fi films of the 1990s that failed to make even close to the same cultural and financial impact of those big hitters? These are the films this list is devoted to - the flops, the straight-to-video releases, the low-budget and critically-derided. We've picked 50 live-action films that fit these criteria, and dug them up to see whether they're still worth watching in the 21st century.

So here's a mix of everything from hidden classics to forgettable dreck,...

Cemetery Dance is one of the longest running and most well-known horror publishers in the game. They recently celebrated the 25th anniversary of their acclaimed horror magazine. Here are some noteworthy books to add to your reading to-do list:     December Park by Ronald Malfi: Signed limited editions of this chilling novel are now available, but will be sold out soon. December Park tells the story of several young friends and the horrors they unearth while searching for a young girl's killer.     Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn: Signed limited edition copies of the best-selling novel are available, but they're going fast. Gone Girl (soon to be a major motion picture) tells the story of Nick Dunne, a seemingly innocent man blamed for his wife's sudden disappearance. [Note: cover art shown above is from the Standard Edition.]     Sometimes, Cemetery Dance sells other publisher's books like The Hogben Chronicles by Henry Kuttner: 500 special-edition copies will be available from Cemetery Dance, but...

Sirius Xm Offers Two Nights of Suspense Starting this Week
Starting this week, fans of the radio anthology series Suspense will be able to hear new versions of their favorite classics broadcast on Sirius Xm BookRadio 80 two nights a week.

The updated Suspense airs Wednesdays (7:30pm Et/4:30pm Pt) and Sundays (11:30pm Et/8:30pm Pt), and Episode #1 is an adaptation of Lovecraft's 'Cool Air,' starring Adrienne Wilkinson and Daamen Krall.

The original Suspense, which ran from 1942-1962, was known as “radio’s outstanding theater of thrills” and featured a virtual 'who’s who' of Hollywood stars, including horror legends Boris Karloff, Bela Lugosi, Vincent Price, and Peter Lorre. Though many of its episodes were murder mysteries, the original Suspense made many forays into pure horror, such as its adaptations of H.P. Lovecraft’s The Dunwich Horror and Curt Siodmak’s Donovan’s Brain.

As for the new Suspense, it goes in a somewhat different direction.

Blue Hours Reviving Horror Radio Anthology Suspense to Air on SiriusXM This Fall
This latest bit of news should be music to the ears of all our readers who enjoy a bit of horror radio now and again. Blue Hours Productions is reviving the classic radio anthology series Suspense, and it will begin airing on SiriusXM Satellite Radio this fall.

The new Suspense, however, will go in a somewhat different direction, notes Blue Hours' John C. Alsedek. “While we’ll still be doing mystery stories, we’re also going for some bone-chilling horror.

Blood-Chillers For the Beach, or, Scary Stories for Summer’s End
In less than a week is Labor Day, traditionally the end of summer for many Americans, though the official end is not until Sept. 22nd, the date of the autumnal equinox. Time for fun in the sun is drawing to a close. I’d like to recommend some horror stories and nightmarish novels to give you some chills for the few hot days left in 2010.

Let’s start with some downloadable stories in audio form, and begin with some of the classics. These are all free (they’re in the public domain), and will remind you of some of the greatest monster movies ever made.

The first is “The Picture in the House”, a story by the influential horror author H. P. Lovecraft. With themes of cannibalism and insanity, it reminds me of Hannibal Lecter of Silence of the Lambs, of the mad clan in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and...

Giant Shoulders: Dan O’Bannon Tribute at the New Beverly
Like Stanley G. Weinbaum, Henry Kuttner, Stan Winston and Dave Allen, Dan O’Bannon left our planet much too soon, leaving behind a world of saddened friends and fans. The sadness doesn’t linger, though, for Dan was a very funny man, and much beloved by those who knew him.

On February 9th, 2010, the New Beverly Cinema hosted the Grindhouse Film Fest’s tribute to Dan O’Bannon, with a double feature screening of “Lifeforce” and “Return of the Living Dead.” To experience Dan’s authentic adaptation of Colin Wilson’s seminal novel “The Space Vampires”, and his loopy, dead-on riff on zombie movies, in a Hollywood revival theater full of rabid fans, is to know what imaginative entertainment is all about.

In addition to such on-screen delights as an unveiled Matilda May, and demented lines such as “Send more cops!”, an informal RotLD cast reunion occurred.
