Founded the Institut des Hautes Etudes Cinématographiques (IDHEC) in
1943. Funded by the French government, the school offered training in
all aspects of production as well as in history, theory, and criticism.
In the postwar years IDHEC's reputation grew steadily, attracting an
impressive international student body including such future luminaries
as
Louis Malle,
Volker Schlöndorff,
Nelson Pereira dos Santos, and
Costa-Gavras. IDHEC was subsumed within
the Fondation Européenne des Métiers de l'Image et du Son (FEMIS),
which opened its doors on November 13, 1986. FEMIS is a privately owned
institution.
