When writer-director Rebecca Miller was playing back her latest film “She Came to Me,” she felt it was missing a compelling song. The National’s singer-turned-composer Bryce Dessner was sitting next to her when the thought entered: Bruce Springsteen would be perfect.

Dessner was drawing inspiration from Marisa Tomei’s character Katrina, who he describes as “a muse and this gutsy character. She’s a miraculous, amazing and powerful woman. She just felt like she could be a character from a Springsteen song,” he says.

Miller, who used the Springsteen hit “Dancing in the Dark” in her 2015 film “Maggie’s Plan,” loved the idea of Springsteen writing the end credits song. “It was an absurd idea, but it just came to me,” Dessner tells Variety. “What would normally feel insurmountable to most people is not the thing that occurs to Rebecca first, but she said, ‘Oh, that’s interesting.'”

The National’s Bryce Dessner has detailed his new soundtrack for the upcoming absurdist comedy She Came to Me starring Peter Dinklage. Out September 29th via Warner Classics and Unigram, the album features an original song from Bruce Springsteen and Patti Scialfa called “Addicted to Romance.”

According to a press release, She Came to Me director Rebecca Miller said the soundtrack came from an “intimate process” of collaboration with Dessner, who boarded the film during its earliest stages. This was especially important since the album had to incorporate two on-screen operas from the movie. Conducted by André de Ridder, the score features contributions from French pianist Katia Labèque and vocals from Greer Grimsley, Alicia Hall Moran, Isabel Leonard, and Emmett O’Hanlon.

Of course, there’s also some Bernard Herrmann thrown in for good measure. Ahead of 70mm screenings at the Tiff Bell Lightbox starting Friday, they’ve collected the tracks into a Spotify list, which can be listened to below, followed by a round-up of recent extensive Phantom Thread talks with its creators.

While Jonny Greenwood’s Oscar-nominated score is well worth numerous streams, the director has curated his own mixtape of 23 songs he suggests you listen to before watching his romance drama. The mixtape is pretty incredible on its own, featuring hits from Beyoncé, Rihanna, Carly Simon, Neil Young, and more, but it’s even better for those who have seen “Phantom Thread” and understand the relationship between Daniel Day-Lewis’ Reynolds Woodcock and Vicky Krieps’ Alma. Rihanna’s “Stay” is especially appropriate for the two lovers.
