Isaac from ‘The Love Boat’ Complained When Real Cruises Introduced Robot Bartenders
Image
In 2014, Royal Caribbean announced that it was going full Wall-e, employing a fleet of robot bartenders on its upcoming cruises. The mechanical mixologists would likely intrigue the ships’ passengers, but at least one person wasn’t amused: Ted Lange, the actor famous for playing Isaac Your Bartender on The Love Boat.

“The first problem with those robots is that they don’t have a mustache,” Lange told NBC News. A furry upper lip, as Love Boat fans knew, was a trademark of the ship’s charismatic bartender.

But there were more practical problems with the Makr Shakrs, the brand name of the robotic barkeeps. “If a couple on a cruise is going into Mazatlan and they ask, ‘Where can we find a great bar?’ the arm can’t tell you,” Lange said. “I have nothing against orange arms, but I would rather see brown arms.”

Back in 2014, academics agreed with Lange,...

Christopher Lowell, Jeanine Mason & Wallace Shawn To Topline Generational Family Drama ‘The Man Who Changed The World’
Image
Exclusive: Christopher Lowell (Promising Young Woman), Jeanine Mason (Upload), and Wallace Shawn (The Princess Bride) have wrapped on the Colorado production of The Man Who Changed the World, a drama spanning generations that’s inspired by the story of visionary entrepreneur Lawrence “Bud” Stoecker.

In the film directed by Greg Pritikin (The Last Laugh), Lowell and Mason play a young couple navigating the trials of marriage, parenthood, and personal legacy. Shawn co-stars as legendary futurist and systems theorist Buckminster Fuller, the architect of the geodesic dome, whose philosophies echo through the picture. The story spans the 1940s, 1960s, and present day, with Illeana Douglas (Goodfellas), Fred Stoller (Everybody Loves Raymond), Ted Lange (The Love Boat), and Matt Wood (Saturday Night) rounding out the cast.

“This is a story about how one family’s spirit of invention, resilience, and love rippled through generations,” Pritikin told us. “We’re thrilled to bring...

Fans of ABC's Doctor Odyssey Should Check Out This Influential 1970s Sitcom
Image
Ryan Murphy may be a contentious figure, but his legacy is undeniable. His massive output has earned him plenty of acclaim — and some criticism. Even so, one of his latest works, Doctor Odyssey, is making big waves on ABC. It has all those recognizable Murphy hallmarks. There’s plenty of drama, more than enough innuendo, and a healthy heap of romance. These spices are tempered by the show’s playful comedy and (mostly) lighthearted tone. After some clever mixing, the results are wrapped in the sort of over-the-top scenarios that made Murphy’s 9-1-1 so compelling.

Knowing all that, it’s not hard to see why Doctor Odyssey fans are begging for more. The show’s September 2024 debut was ABC’s highest-rated premiere in four years, and Murphy’s narrative has some serious staying power. However, there’s not much to see — not yet, at least. So, what can fans do while they wait?...

Doctor Odyssey is This Generations The Love Boat
Image
Its exciting and new. Come and join us. Were expecting you. Anyone who grew up in the 70s or 80s, or who loves retro TV, will recognize those words as lyrics from the iconic theme song to the romantic comedy-drama The Love Boat. The ABC series, which aired for nine seasons from 1977 through 1986 along with several special episodes, hailed from Aaron Spelling, the powerhouse behind iconic shows like Beverly Hills, 90210, Dynasty, and Melrose Place. And it was a massive success. Ryan Murphy, arguably this generations Spelling, may have drawn inspiration from this series for his latest hit. Doctor Odyssey is a medical drama that takes the procedural format to the open seas.

The main similarity between these two shows is, of course, that they both take place on the water via cruise ship. But its difficult not to draw other comparisons. In fact, Doctor Odyssey is a modern-day version of The Love Boat.

The 10 Best Donna Dixon Movies & TV Shows Ranked
Image
Donna Dixon was a staple of 1980s comedies, frequently appearing alongside her husband, Dan Aykroyd, in some of the decade's classics. Dixon began her career as a model, winning Miss Virginia USA in 1976 and competing in both Miss USA 1976 and Miss World USA 1977 (via 2Paragraphs). She began her acting career in 1980, with a starring role in the early Tom Hanks vehicle Bosom Buddies. Her Miss USA looks, and modeling background naturally had Dixon cast as romantic leads or girls next door, but that belied her real talent as a multidimensional actor.

In her first film, Doctor Detroit, Dixon met Dan Aykroyd, and the pair married that same year. The ever-funny Dan Aykroyd and the charming Dixon made a great pair in the next three films they made together. They also had three children together; Danielle, Belle, and Stella. In April 2022, after 39 years of marriage, Dixon and Aykroyd announced they would be separating,...

Miss The Love Boat? Don Johnson's New Drama Is The Perfect Contemporary Remake Of The Romantic Show
Image
Romance will return to the high seas in Don Johnson's new drama, Doctor Odyssey, and it's the perfect contemporary oceanic romance for those who loved The Love Boat. An iconic 1970s sitcom show, The Love Boat, aired for 10 seasons from 1977 to 1986 on ABC. The romantic comedy series by Wilford Lloyd Baumes sailed away long ago, but actors like Gavin MacLeod, Bernie Kopell, and Ted Lange forged a spot in the hearts of many for romance set aboard a cruise ship on the open seas. Don Johnson will return the premise to ABC on Thursday nights in the fall.

Doctor Odyssey will premiere on ABC on September 26.

Another up-and-coming Ryan Murphy show, Doctor Odyssey will offer plenty of modern twists that up the stakes for offshore romance. ABC released the medical drama's official season 1 teaser ahead of the series debut on September 26. The official teaser promises glamorous landscapes and characters...

The Only Major Actors Still Alive From The Love Boat
Image
"The Love Boat" holds a fascinating place in pop culture history. While most of the shows with reruns playing in heavy rotation today were in some way groundbreaking upon their initial release, "The Love Boat" is a novelty the likes of which modern TV rarely – if ever – tries to emulate. An anthology-like rom-com set aboard a cruise ship, "The Love Boat" featured a revolving door of guest stars and little connective tissue to speak of aside from the cast playing the crew aboard the ship.

The deeply '70s series earned high ratings for much of its run, yet was considered pretty silly even at the time of its release. John J. O'Connor called it a "dreadful porridge of a conception" in The New York Times, while the Orlando Sentinel's Noel Holston said it needed "sharper writing, better casting, more original situations, an end to the indefatigable laugh track or,...

‘The Love Boat’ Getting Reality TV Reboot on U.S. and Australian TV
Image
“The Love Boat” soon will be making another run, promising something for everyone — but this time as a reality dating series.

CBS and its sister Australian broadcaster Network 10 have both ordered local versions of “The Real Love Boat,” set to air in the U.S. and Australia later this year. The show is exactly what it sounds like: A reality dating competition show, but patterned after the hit 1970s hour-long comedy “The Love Boat.”

And just as Princess Cruises served as the backdrop to the scripted series, the cruise line’s ships will also serve as a setting for the new unscripted shows.

“The Love Boat” was produced by Aaron Spelling, whose company was later purchased by Viacom — eventually leading to the “Love Boat” IP being owned by CBS Studios. CBS and Network 10 are now Paramount Global brands.

“‘The Love Boat’ is a timeless, romantic concept with universal appeal,...

Cast of 'The Love Boat' Reunites 40 Years Later to Receive Star on Hollywood Walk of Fame!
Everyone's back on deck! The cast of The Love Boat had a reunion on Friday, May 10, to receive their star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in partnership with Princess Cruises — and it was so good to see them all back together 40 years since the show first aired. The hit series ran from 1977 until 1986, and in our opinion, it very much deserves this prestigious acknowledgment. For the special get-together in La — which aired on Today — some of the show's most memorable faces including Gavin McLeod, Ted Lange, Bernie Kopell, Cynthia Lauren Tewes, Jill Whelan, and Fred Grandy dressed the part in their black and navy blue pantsuits. The best part? Gavin even sported his signature Capt. Merril Stubing captain's hat! (Photo Credit: Getty Images) In a previous interview with Closer Weekly, Gavin gushed about his times on The Love Boat. "It was the perfect fit for me," he shared. "The...

Friday Foster | Blu-ray Review
Towering aggressively over the legacy of the problematic film movement of 1970s Blaxploitation is the iconic figure of actress Pam Grier, emblazoned in our memories as the self-reliant beauty holding her own (well, mostly) with her male co-stars prior to her white female counterparts, like Sigourney Weaver and Linda Hamilton. She’s an important cinematic figure, and much like the symbolic essence of Marilyn Monroe, her reputation outweighs familiarity with many of the films that brought her iconicity. Arriving in the middle of her gamut of classic titles was 1975’s Friday Foster, of which Grier is the eponymous star. Campy, cringe worthy, and so remarkably asinine it may just as well be classified as sci-fi, production values and an impressive supporting cast surely solidifies the title as requisite viewing for Grier’s fan base. Unfortunately, for all involved, their talents (a common complaint of the genre) are worthy of less slipshod silliness.

Oprah Winfrey in The Oprah Winfrey Show (1986)
“Oprah: Where Are They Now?” comes back this weekend (Sun. June 8 at 9:00 p.m. Et on Own) with the reunion you never knew you wanted to see: the cast of that epic '80s cheesefest "The Love Boat." Ted Lange, Cynthia Lauren Tewes and Jill Whelan reunite and reminisce about life aboard The Pacific Princess, which was probably less fabulous than it looked on our TV screens. Then, in a rare interview at her Beverly Hills home, the one and only Latin music sensation Charo talks about success and the real meaning of her catchphrase “Cuchi-Cuchi.” We can only hope she talks about why she does not seem to have aged since 1982. Next, Dave Coulier, who played Uncle Joey on the popular sitcom “Full House,” talks about his real-life relationships with former co-stars Bob Saget and John Stamos and the truth about those Alanis Morissette rumors. Plus, actor D.B. Sweeney,...
