A physicist by training, he held patents for improvements in both nuclear reactor control rod technology and television imaging and transmission equipment.

Worked for ITV from the mid-1950's and remained primarily a television director. His sparse feature output generally consisted of thrillers and horror films. He is best known for helming several classic episodes of "The Avengers", "Danger Man" and "The Baron".

After working on improving radar for the British in WWII, he was sent to Oak Ridge, Tennessee where he worked on the top-secret Manhattan Project that lead to the development of the first atomic bombs.
