Originally from the East Coast of Canada, and now based in Toronto, Michael has shot films and music videos around the globe in North & South America, Europe, Africa, and more.
Michael broke into the music video scene in 2007 as a highly regarded cinematographer, doing innovative work that early in his career allowed him the room to experiment with a wide range of cinematic styles and influences. This background honed his craft and made him a well-rounded artist with a sharp eye in both long and short format.
Michael was the recipient of the inaugural Prism Prize Arthur Lipsett Award. He has been twice nominated for the UK Music Video Awards. And in 2008 he won a Camera Image D&AD Yellow Pencil Award for Outstanding Achievement.
His video for Fucked Up: Queen of Hearts (2011) was included in TIFF's 150 Essential Works in Canadian Cinema History. His work has been featured in Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, The Globe & Mail, VICE, Interview Magazine, SPIN, and others, earning spots on numerous global top music video lists.
Michael's feature film work has screened at prestigious festivals such as TIFF, Berlin, Karlovy Vary, Stockholm, and many others. His credits include Business Ethics (2019) (Larenz Tate, Lance Reddick, Kurtwood Smith), No Stranger Than Love (2015) (Alison Brie, Colin Hanks), The Coat (shot in Italy, and part of TIFF's 2015 Wavelengths program), The Pin (2013) (Cannes Perspectives Canada) and Toiretto (2010), a Japanese/Canadian co-production starring Tatiana Maslany and others. Michael's television work includes 2nd Unit DP on Netflix's Anne with an E (2017), and TMN's Rogue (2013).
