In the wake of the departure of Paramount Pictures and Paramount Television Evp of Casting Joseph Middleton back in January, the studio has split his job into two, just as Deadline heard, and hired Deborah Aquila and Tricia Wood as EVPs of Casting. Aquila will run point on TV reporting to Paramount President of Television Nicole Clemens, while Wood will oversee film, reporting into Wyck Godfrey, Paramount Motion Pictures Group President.
Aquila and Wood previously had their own firm, Aquila Wood Casting, on behalf of Lionsgate. Aquila recently cast Paramount/Skydance’s Chris Pratt sci-fi movie The Tomorrow War which is currently in post, and she also cast Lionsgate hits, the multi-Oscar winning Lala Land and Wonder. Wood came up under Aquila. The two count over 150 credits on film and TV pilots.

The duo previously headed Aquila Wood Casting on behalf of Lionsgate. They will act as one cohesive team, but Aquila will run point on TV, reporting to Nicole Clemens, President of Paramount Television Studios; Wood will run point for the film side, reporting to Wyck Godfrey, President of Paramount’s Motion Picture Group. As far as pilot orders go this season, NBC has been the most prolific network, getting a jump with several off-cycle orders and augmenting those with a slew of green lights over the past two weeks. The Peacock also seems to be moving more quickly than the competition to secure casting directors for its projects, as Backstage has learned of six more pilots that have closed deals for casting. Three new NBC fall comedies, as well as one drama slated for midseason, now have casting directors under contract, Back Stage has learned.Lisa Miller Katz will cast “Animal Practice” (formerly “Animal Kingdom”), a single-camera comedy set in a veterinary clinic. Justin Kirk stars as a vet who loves animals, but would prefer that they not come with owners. Also starring are Tyler Labine, JoAnna Garcia, Bobby Lee, and Betsy Sodaro, one of Back Stage’s 10 Comics to Watch for 2012.Susie Farris will cast “Go On,” which stars Matthew Perry as a sports talk radio host who is forced by his boss to attend grief counseling after the loss of his wife. His initial skepticism is unfounded, however, as he gains solace and support from the eccentric characters that attend his group sessions.
