The Hollywood Reporter
The Writers Guild of America on Wednesday announced the nominees for its annual WGA Awards. Most of the usual suspects were nominated — La La Land, Moonlight, Manchester by the Sea, Hell or High Water and Loving, along with Arrival, Fences, Hidden Figures and Nocturnal Animals. But not all of them were nominated in the category in which you’d expect. And rather than competing against films like Hacksaw Ridge, Silence, Lion or The Lobster, they instead found themselves in the company of the comic book adaptation Deadpool, about as much of a popcorn movie as one could imagine.

If you’re a time travel geek or a history buff, chances are you’ve been looking forward to NBC’s new contribution to turn-back-the-clock television, Timeless, premiering tonight. Time travel is ultimately just a device for co-creators Eric Kripke (Supernatural) and Shawn Ryan (The Shield) to put iconic moments in history on screen and take their characters on a journey where they’re soon faced with questions of fate and identity. But it’s still a device that required some carefully crafted rules. “It definitely makes me want to put a gun in my mouth, the rules of time travel,” Kripke told me at San Diego Comic-Con. “As we were beginning this show, all my friends who were writers on time travel shows were like, ‘How's it going?’ and it seemed like they knew something I didn’t. I was like ‘What do you mean? It’s going to be fine.

Shows that involve time travel have a lot of hurdles that need to be factored in, and Timeless confronts the challenge by attempting to simply avoid the problems altogether. It’s actually a good way to go, and the way the show builds its premise works better than anyone probably dared to hope.
The best element the show puts in play is that no one who actually does the time travelling wanted to go. Well, that’s only true of our heroes, but that’s all that matters. Time travel is forced upon them, and that puts us in the position of unique, and easier to develop, motivations for our characters.
Lucy Preston (Abigail Spencer – Suits, Rectify) is a mild-mannered, but respected, history professor who is pressed into service for the government when a time machine (secretly constructed by a private sector company) is stolen. Known criminal/terrorist Garcia Flynn...

The filmmakers behind "Deadpool" have prided themselves on the flick's "hard R" rating, promising to deliver a different, more graphic breed of superhero movie to fans. Now, that plan has prevented the film from debuting in China, the second-biggest movie market on the planet.
According to local media reports (as translated by The Hollywood Reporter), Chinese officials have denied "Deadpool" permission to screen in the country, despite its Marvel affiliation. The country often works to assure Marvel movies release in China, since the flicks are quite popular there; unfortunately for "Deadpool," its self-boasted coarse language and graphic violence and nudity were its undoing.
Here's how the decision unfolded, per THR:
China's censorship authorities often work with the Hollywood studios to create cleaned-up special cuts of R-rated movies, but sources close to the Deadpool decision say it wasn't possible to excise the offending material without causing plot problems.

There have been promises before that "Deadpool" will be a different breed of superhero movie, and that includes the film's rating. Star Ryan Reynolds has said in the past that the flick will be rated R, and now, producer Simon Kinberg is doubling down on that declaration.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, in which he also debuted a new "Deadpool" photo (see below), Kinberg said that audiences would not be disappointed in the colorful, foul-mouthed hero's onscreen representation.
"'Deadpool' is a hard R," Kinberg told EW. "It's graphic. Nothing is taboo. You either commit to a truly outrageous boundary-pushing kind of movie or you don't."
In fact, the flick is so dark that its director, Tim Miller (making his feature debut), linked it to a surprising source of inspiration.
"I felt 'Fight Club' and Tyler Durden were good corollaries," Miller told EW. "We are in...

After being marooned for five years on a remote island, former billionaire playboy Oliver Queen returns with a mysterious agenda and a lethal set of new skills that he uses in a war on crime
Here’s a first look at the new The CW’s pilot Arrow, starring Stephen Amell as Oliver Queen and Arrow. Arrow’s suit was designed by three-time Oscar®-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood.
Arrow pilot director/executive producer David Nutter said: “When I directed the pilot for Smallville, I knew that making Clark Kent relatable would be the key to audiences believing in him as a hero. Arrow is a different show — darker and harder-edged — but it’s the same core idea. We’re creating a real, believable world in which Oliver Queen can do incredible things. Colleen Atwood’s great work on the Arrow costume reflects that effort.

Kate Beckinsale, Underworld Awakening The Artist is a critical favorite and the winner of the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical. The all-powerful Harvey Weinstein's The Weinstein Company is the film's North American distributor. Unfortunately, the critical awards, the Golden Globes, and the Power of the Weinstein haven't been enough to convince all that many moviegoers to check out the silent, black-and-white homage to Old Hollywood. There's that old saying espoused by some dishonest bullshitter or other at the Motion Picture Association of America: Make good movies and you'll see the results at the box office. When discussing 3D about a year ago, current MPAA head and former Democratic senator Chris Dodd — of Sopa and Pipa infamy — asserted that technology ain't that crucial for a film's success as "a movie is still going to come down to story." The "story" that brought tons of asses to...

I love a good death scene. Ronald Lacey's Arnold Toht in Raiders of the Lost Ark. Samuel L. Jackson's Russell Franklin in Deep Blue Sea. Sean Bean's Boromir in Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. ("My brother...my captain...my king." Cue: me, sobbing.) So imagine my disappointment upon seeing 2012. (Warning: Spoilers Ahead.) I finally caught up with last weekend's box-office champ, and though I agreed with our critic Lisa Schwarzbaum, finding the film to be a fun spectacle, I couldn't get over one of the most nonsensical and unnecessary death scenes I've seen...

In 2012, co-writer-director-producer Roland Emmerich once again deals with dangerous forces of nature—in this case, cataclysmic events connected to the end of the Mayan calendar. Another force of nature in the movie—but more comical than dangerous—is the always unpredictable and eccentrically entertaining Woody Harrelson, who plays the flaky but funny conspiracy theorist and radio broadcaster Charlie Frost.
“We realized that there are many crazy people on the Internet who believe lots of crazy things about 2012,” Emmerich says. “So we thought our movie should have a character like that. At one point, we said, ‘We have to explain what the theory is. How do we explain this in scientific terms?’ And we said, ‘We could have [Woody’s character] tell the audience.’ So then we had to figure out how to do it, and we came up with his little youtube video, which I thought was a clever way to do that.

John Cusack has been working in the indie scene these last couple of years, producing and starring in Grace Is Gone and War, Inc. and appearing in Martian Child, the 2007 film adaptation of former Starlog columnist David Gerrold’s novel. 2012 represents a leap into the big-budget world of popcorn action pictures, and Cusack begins the second part of this chat by talking about co-writer-producer-director Roland Emmerich’s ability to manage his actors and their needs as well as handling a production as huge as 2012.
“There aren’t too many directors in the world who can work on both of those levels—or who have the freedom to do that,” Cusack points out. “I can think of Steven Spielberg and some other people. Roland is so good at doing state-of-the-art special effects. As I was reading the script, I would say to myself, ‘I have no idea how you would even begin to shoot that.

If you don’t know about 2012 by now, then you either don’t own a television, live somewhere where billboards are banned, have no Internet access or haven’t been keeping track of Starlog’s coverage of the blockbuster Sf-action film that premiered Friday to record box office. And if you don’t know about 2012 director Roland Emmerich by now, then you must not be a fan of disaster flicks, because the 21st Century’s “Master of Disaster” is also the man behind Independence Day, Godzilla and The Day After Tomorrow.
The end of the Mayan calendar is the source of the seismic and end-of-the-world events that are central to 2012’s storyline. “I was working on a project about Gonzalo Guerrero, who was the first of a small group of Spaniards who stepped foot on the Yucatan and encountered the Mayans,” Emmerich explains. “So because of that, I had studied the Mayan culture.

John Cusack, action star? In the 1980s, the actor appeared in such beloved comedies as Sixteen Candles, The Sure Thing, Better Off Dead, One Crazy Summer and Say Anything. In the ’90s, he branched out in such disparate films as The Grifters, Bullets Over Broadway, Grosse Point Blank and Being John Malkovich. And in the past decade, the versatile thespian has appeared in Max, The Ice Harvest, Grace Is Gone and 1408. But action star? Ok, so Cusack was in Con Air, but action star?
The actor plays everyman Jackson Curtis—an aspiring Sf writer who tries to protect his family as the world’s end nears—in 2012. Roland Emmerich’s latest disaster flick was a change of pace for Cusack, who outruns earthquakes, floods and other cataclysmic events as the film’s family man of action. “The swimming I did, but the driving, not so much,” Cusack says of the...

For Chiwetel Ejiofor, the Sf-disaster film 2012 is a return to genre movies—and he hopes to revisit the science fiction universe soon. “Science fiction is something that I’ve always enjoyed,” he says. “Ever since I was in my teens, I was a bit of a fanboy and a comic book fan. It has been interesting in recent times that the comics that I enjoyed reading—like [those by writer] Alan Moore—have filtered into the mainstream movie scene, where before it was always on the periphery. That’s exciting, but you always want there to be that vessel of the pure comic book narrative that exists [outside of being] a storyboard for movies. Comics are supposed to be underground and subversive and slightly weird.”
Comic book movies are all the rage today. Batman, Spider-Man, Iron Man and other four-color superheroes have been dominating the silver screen for the last few years, but Ejiofor is leery...

Following in the footsteps of Irwin Allen, Roland Emmerich is this generation’s “Master of Disaster.” The former gave us such catastrophic films as The Poseidon Adventure, The Towering Inferno and When Time Ran Out... The latter has directed Independence Day, Godzilla, The Day After Tomorrow and now 2012. The two filmmakers have much in common: They’re fond of end-of-the-world stories, ensemble casts featuring well-known actors and long running times. The Towering Inferno clocked in at 165 minutes; 2012 isn’t too far behind at 158. End of the world? How about end of the Movie? By the time the great tsunami tidal waves were wiping out the planet, I was worried about another type of great flood—and made a 50-yard dash for the bathroom.
Natural disasters and apocalyptic events are the MacGuffins in an Emmerich movie—they set the story in motion, but does it Really matter what the cataclysmic cause is?...

The master of disaster Roland Emmerich is back and this time nothing's sacred. Will his over-the-top spectacle -- blowing up Vegas, India and Rome among other locales -- be the cure-all for moviegoers this weekend? Sony Pictures seems to think so. The PG-13-rated actioner starring John Cusack and Amanda Peet will bow in some 3,000 locations. The only thing that could hold back the weekend results on this film is the long runtime of 2 hours and 38 minutes. (This may be the perfect movie to test out RunPee.com so you know when to duck out to the bathroom.) Also opening...

Chiwetel Ejiofor caught his first break when he was cast in a small role in Steven Spielberg’s Amistad, and since then the versatile actor has showcased his talents in a variety of disparate roles: Okwe in Stephen Frears’ Dirty Pretty Things, Peter in Richard Curtis’ Love Actually, Ellis in Woody Allen’s Melinda And Melinda and Huey in Ridley Scott’s American Gangster. Ejiofor is no stranger to the genre, either, having appeared in Joss Whedon’s Serenity, Alfonso Cuarón’s Children Of Men and Roland Emmerich’s 2012, which opens Friday. Speaking about that film, Ejiofor discusses his role as Adrian Helmsley, a government scientist who discovers changes in the Earth’s core, crust and atmosphere that spell certain doom for mankind in the year 2012.
Scientists are a staple of Sf movies, and Ejiofor says one particular cinematic scientist came to mind when he signed on to do 2012. “Jeff Goldblum...

In Roland Emmerich’s latest disaster epic 2012, Amanda (The Martian Child) Peet plays Kate Curtis, ex-wife to Jackson Curtis (John Cusack), mother of two and one of a handful of characters we follow as they seek safe ground and try to survive the cataclysmic events prophesized by the Mayans centuries ago.
“I had heard of it, but I wasn’t familiar with it,” Peet says of the controversial end-of-the-world theories ascribed to the conclusion of the Mayan calendar. And she doesn’t give it much credence, either. “I feel there’s Enough to worry about. Science is more the thing with my family. I’m sure my sister and brother-in-law [who are both in the medical profession] would think I was crazy if I started talking about my fear of 2012.”
In the film, not everyone on the planet can be saved, but if you have enough money and power (a lá When Worlds Collide), you can buy...

I'm just gonna put this out there: I enjoyed the movie White Chicks. In fairness, I have only seen perhaps three-quarters of the 2004 film while channel surfing. Yet the parts that I've caught made me laugh, repeatedly. I know not all critics agree with me. But let's review White Chicks' merits for a moment. The Wayans brothers? Funny. Outlandish disguises? Funny. Stereotypical Valley girls who are actually undercover FBI agents? Like, so funny! Which is why I was pleasantly surprised today to read that Shawn, Marlon, and Keenen Ivory Wayans are planning a sequel to White Chicks. Details are scarce at the moment, but I think we can all imagine pretty much how this movie is going to go. Another crime of some sort, another opportunity for those luckless FBI guys to prove themselves by going under deep cover -- this script is going to write itself. And as...
