It's not often that a live-action adaptation of another piece of work is done right, but with the live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender series, Netflix might have just struck the perfect balance between staying true to the beloved animated series and adding a fresh, cinematic touch.

After premiering its first season in February 2024, the adventure fantasy series was quickly renewed for two additional installments only a month later. For all the blood, sweat, and manpower that ABC poured into finding a successor to "Lost" (a show that shaped the course of television in the early 21st century), I'd bet dollars to donuts the network never wagered it would take the shape of "Once Upon a Time."

Conceived by "Lost" alumni and "Tron: Legacy" writers Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis, "Once Upon a Time" casts "House, M.D." veteran Jennifer Morrison as Emma Swan, a seemingly unremarkable bail bond agent who, just like any hero's journey protagonist worth their salt, discovers there's far more to her world (and destiny) than she ever realized. Star Wars needs to stop teasing me with cool X-wing action and finally make Rogue Squadron already. As seen in The Mandalorian and other connected New Republic Era shows, X-wings have briefly been featured from time to time as the New Republic strives to keep the galaxy safe following the fall of the Empire. However, we're long overdue for the Rogue Squadron movie that was first announced over 4 years ago.

Originally announced in December 2020, Lucasfilm revealed that a Rogue Squadron movie was in development with director Patty Jenkins. An all-new fighter pilot epic featuring a new generation of X-wing pilots in the galaxy far, far away, the movie eventually faced multiple delays before being pulled from Lucasfilm's release schedule. Now, Star Wars keeps teasing epic X-wing action sequences in its shows, while I'm still waiting for Rogue Squadron to finally happen.

As Skeleton Crew draws close to the finish line, the remaining episodes are guaranteed to be more exciting than anything else we've seen. There's a possibility of shocking twists and turns, and as so many Star Wars shows are set during the New Republic era, the door is open to major characters from other Mandoverse shows.

Viola Davis said that probably her proudest achievement was the creation of her game-changing character Annalise Keating in legal drama thriller “How to Get Away With Murder,” during an onstage interview Thursday at the Red Sea Film Festival in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, where many in the ecstatic audience had greeted her by declaring, “I love you, Viola.”

She also spoke of the bravery that was required to stand up to the orthodoxy that held sway in network TV when the show launched 10 years ago.

Variety publishes, below, an edited excerpt from the interview, which was as refreshing in its honesty as the actor’s performances.

“As a character [as originally envisaged], she made absolutely no sense,” she said, eliciting laughter and applause in the audience. “I mean, you have to be honest with it: a lot of characters on television, they just don’t make sense. They’re a Mr. Potato Head of an audience’s desires.

Brad Ingelsby is staying in business with HBO.

Variety has learned exclusively that the celebrated writer and producer has extended his overall deal with the premium cabler for a further three years. The news comes as Ingelsby is currently prepping the limited series “Task” at HBO, with that show set to debut in 2025.

Ingelsby has been based at HBO since 2021, the same year that “Mare of Easttown” debuted. Ingelsby created that limited series in addition to serving as executive producer and showrunner. The show, which followed a murder investigation in a suburb of Philadelphia, marked Ingelsby’s television writing debut.

“Mare of Easttown” proved to be a major critical success for HBO, with the show picking up 16 Emmy nominations. For the 40th annual IDA Documentary Awards Ceremony, the International Documentary Association returned to a live event held December 5 at The Orpheum Theater in Los Angeles. The show was also livestreamed on IDA’s YouTube channel. (The nominees and winners are here.)

The ceremony, this year hosted by Adam Conover, has long served as an annual celebration for the documentary community.

The IDA received more than 700 entries from 77 countries, an increase over last year both in the total number of entries and the countries represented. IDA Documentary Awards entries were reviewed by jurors consisting of 300 documentary professionals from more than 40 countries. IDA members had access to stream nominees and winners in the Best Feature Documentary and Best Short Documentary categories until December 31, 2024.

Heading into the evening, “Sugarcane” led all nominees with five, including Best Feature Documentary, followed by “Soundtrack to Coup d’Etat” with four. ‘Wicked: Part I’ recently released to glowing reviews and phenomenal box office success. It’s based on the stage musical ‘Wicked,’ which is inspired by Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel, itself a reimagining of L. Frank Baum’s ‘The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.’

"Star Wars: Skeleton Crew" episode 1 begins with an unfortunate space pirate raid, but soon moves away from the action. The majority of the episode is spent introducing the central quartet of youngsters and the secluded world they live in, only sending them into hyperspace at the very end.

Popeye The Slayer Man: "Popeye the Slayer Man, a new horror feature exploring an alternate backstory for the legendary sailor, will be coming early 2025. The first trailer, stills, and teaser art have been released.

The film concerns a group of friends who sneak into an abandoned spinach canning factory to film a documentary on the legend of the “Sailor Man,” who is said to haunt the factory and local docks.

“We can’t wait for audiences to get a load of this gory and scary version of Popeye,” says producer Jeff Miller. “We went old-school and focused on using real practical effects, and not relying on CG for the gore. We’re talking with very enthusiastic and interested buyers now.”

Among this year’s IDA nominees for Best Feature, only “Sugarcane” was also nominated for the top prize by the Critics Choice Documentary Awards. Nominees in Best Documentary Feature and Best Documentary Short categories have been selected from the shortlists previously announced. IDA members will have access to view each of the nominated films and can begin voting on November 19, 2024.

IDA has been an inconsistent, but important precursor for the Oscars. Last year, only one of the IDA top 10 went on to contend for Best Documentary Feature: “Bobi Wine: The People’s President” lost that Oscar race to “20 Days in Mariupol.

“Sugarcane,” the documentary about the mistreatment of Indigenous children in Canada, has received the most nominations at yet another awards show for nonfiction features, picking up five noms to lead the field at the International Documentary Association’s IDA Documentary Awards.

In nominations announced on Tuesday, the film by Julian Brave NoiseCat and Emily Kassie was nominated in the Best Feature Documentary category, as well as for its directing, cinematography, editing and musical score. It had previously led in nominations at the Cinema Eye Honors and Critics Choice Documentary Awards as well.

“Soundtrack to a Coup d’Etat” received four nominations, while “Black Box Diaries” and “Queendom” each received three.

In the Best Feature Documentary category, those four films were nominated alongside “Agent of Happiness,” “Dahomey,” “Ernest Cole: Lost and Found,” “No Other Land,” “Seeking Mavis Beacon” and “The Remarkable Life of Ibelin.”

Han will play Long Feng, who was the leader of Ba Sing Se secret police, the Dai Li, in the animated Nickelodeon series. Xuande will play Professor Zei, head of the anthropology department at Ba Sing Se University in the original series who was obsessed with finding Wan Shi Tong’s Library.

Chien will play King Kuei, ruler of the Earth Kingdom. Zhou will play Joo Dee, a public servant and guide for important visitors in Ba Sing Se. Yu will play Lady Beifong, Toph’s mother. Martha Plimpton and Mireille Enos have been officially announced as part of the cast of Brad Ingelsby’s upcoming series at HBO, a followup to his hit Mare Of Easttown.

Martha Plimpton and Mireille Enos have joined the cast of “Task,” an upcoming HBO drama series starring Mark Ruffalo.

Set in the working class suburbs outside of Philadelphia, “Task” follows Tom (Ruffalo), an FBI agent leading a task force meant to tend to a string of drug-house robberies led by an unsuspecting family man (Tom Pelphrey).

Plimpton plays Kathleen McGinty, the FBI supervisory senior resident in charge who recruits Tom to lead the task force just as she learns that she is being forced to retire, while Enos plays Tom’s wife, Susan Brandis. The pair married young, which is the reason Tom left the priesthood.

HBO is rounding out the cast of its upcoming limited series Task.

The drama from Mare of Easttown creator Brad Ingelsby has added Martha Plimpton and Mireille Enos to its already large ensemble. Mark Ruffalo heads the cast as an FBI agent leading a task force investigating a string of drug-house robberies in the Philadelphia suburbs.

Plimpton’s presence in Task was revealed Sunday in a teaser for HBO and Max’s upcoming programming. She will play Kathleen McGinty, a career FBI agent who recruits Tom (Ruffalo) to head up the task force, just as she learns that she is being forced to retire. Enos will play Susan Brandis, Tom’s wife and the heart and soul of their family. She and Tom married young and is the reason he left the priesthood.

A new animated movie meant to be family-friendly will tell the story of zoo animals who are changed by a mystery meteor virus. The movie will mix horror and comedy in a new way.

“Night of the Apocalypse,” directed by Ricardo Curtis and Rodrigo Perez-Castro, is a project that brings together artists from France, Canada, and Belgium. The movie uses a new method of independent animation: creative problem-solving and collaboration with people from other countries.

According to Curtis, they wanted to make something new. The movie was made by House of Cool and Copperheart Pictures, two companies in Toronto that work well together because they have different skills. House of Cool brought a lot of animation knowledge from working on big-budget movies, and Copperheart brought new ideas and energy to the project.

“Night of the Zoopocalypse,” the spooky animated family comedy featuring the voices of David Harbour (“Stranger Things”), Scott Thompson (“The Kids in the Hall”), Paul Sun-Hyung Lee (“The Mandalorian”) and Gabbi Kosmidis (“Unicorn Academy”) has been picked up by Viva Pictures for the U.S. The deal was brokered with Charades and Anton, who were handling sales, ahead of the film’s world premiere at the Sitges Film Festival on Oct. 6.

“Night of the Zoopocalypse” will be released across North America on March 7, 2025. Elevation Pictures will distribute theatrically in Canada.

The cast of Netflix's Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2 will feature familiar faces from its predecessor, combined with some new performers and characters. By the time of The Last Airbender season 1's ending, Aang had pushed back the Fire Nation attack on the Northern Water Tribe and was planning to set off for the Earth Kingdom to find an Earthbending teacher. This would come as he honed his Airbending and Waterbending, harnessing the powers granted to him as one of The Last Airbender's many Avatars, the masters of all four elements.

This ending set up the story perfectly for The Last Airbender season 2, with Netflix confirming two more installments of the show to coincide with the three seasons of Nickelodeon's original animated series. Where there is a new season, there will also be new stories, locations, action set pieces, and characters, with the latter element bringing new cast members too.

In a clip released as part of Netflix’s annual Geeked Week fan event, Toph’s feet are seen in closeup before she stomps down and demonstrates her earthbending.

The 17-year-old Cech is likely best known to audiences as the younger version of Ali Wong’s character in the Netflix romantic comedy “Always Be My Maybe,” released in 2019. Funnily enough, she also played a younger version of Ali Wong’s character in an episode of the Netflix series “Beef.” She also starred in Nickelodeon’s short-lived series “The Astronauts” and had a supporting role in last year’s coming-of-age comedy “You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah.”

Toph was first introduced in Book 2 of the original “Last Airbender” animated series.

Avatar: The Last Airbender season two is officially in production. Netflix announced the news with a teaser video, and revealed the actress cast in the highly anticipated role of earthbender Toph.

First released in February, Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Nickelodeon’s beloved animated series was renewed for two more seasons in March.

The story, like its animated original, follows Aang (Gordon Cormier), the young Avatar, as he learns to master the four elements (Water, Earth, Fire, Air) to restore balance to a world threatened by the Fire Nation. Kiawentiio plays his friend Katara, and Ian Ousley her brother Sokka.

For season two, Netflix announced Miya Cech will play Toph, an earthbender who joins the crew. The video released Thursday does not reveal her face, but implies her earthbending powers.

Cech’s previous credits include one episode of the Emmy-winning Beef and Adam Sandler’s You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah.

The first conversation Paul Sun-Hyung Lee had with The Mandalorian showrunners Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni did not divulge much information except for a significant detail about his character's home planet.

Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, the actor who portrays the New Republic's Captain Carson Teva in The Mandalorian and other "Mandoverse" titles, has revealed a surprising yet vitally important connection between his ranger character and Princess Leia Organa herself. Carson Teva was first introduced in The Mandalorian season 2, episode 2 "Chapter 10: The Passenger" as one of the two X-wing pilots who chased and then saved Din Djarin, Grogu, and Frog Lady. Carson has since become one of the few "Mandoverse" characters to appear in all three of the subfranchise's TV shows to date. His importance, however, is only just growing.

Lee spoke more about his character's backstory to fellow The Mandalorian star and Bo-Katan Kryze actress Katee Sackhoff on her podcast The Sackhoff Show, where he revealed the details of his initial phone call with The Mandalorian executive producers Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni. "[Favreau and Filoni] didn't give me a lot of details," Lee told Sackhoff.
