Reading comics digitally is weird for me: it’s so disconnected from the physicality of a real book, and generally lack covers and explanatory copy, so it dives right into story without any explanation as to how or why or who.
I also tend to have stuff that’s been sitting around for a while, since I was getting digital review copies for most of the last decade but not actually reading more than a couple of them. (I very easily forget that I have a particular collection of electrons sitting in a folder somewhere; real physical objects on a shelf are much better at reminding me they exist and are waiting to be read.)
For example, I just this second tracked down a cover for this book, so I could slap it into the top left of this post. It looks completely unfamiliar, and The Tooth is a book...

Jem and the Holograms #10
Written by Kelly Thompson

Published by Idw on December 30, 2015
Jen Bartel’s cover: Jerrica with Rio, but behind her in the reflective glass is Jem looking back at her. That’s what this issue is about: reflection. Introduced on the cover, the theme continues throughout: what something appears to be and what the reality is beneath the surface. Duality of character. It is ironic, then, that the issue leaves the obvious example–Jem and Jerrica–in the background.
This blindspot comes from a change in narrator. This is Rio’s story, and his reporter skills of observation appear to stop short of seeing the subterfuge behind Jem. What we do get are his insights into the Misfits as well as some well-deserved character development for Rio himself.

Two words could be used to describe comics in 2015: scandal and rebirth. The scandals happened off the pages at both companies large and small, and the rebirth happened in the comics themselves.
Graphic Policy reported that former Dark Horse Comics editor-in-chief Scott Allie bit writer Joe Harris (X-Files Season Ten) at the Boom! Studios party at San Diego Comic Con, and he was demoted to “executive editor” even though an assault of this kind would be grounds for dismissal at almost any other company. There was also another ethical breach at Dark Horse when The Rainbow Hub journalist Emma Houxbois reported that former Bleeding Cool editor Hanna Means-Shannon broke a Dark Horse-related story while it was under embargo and didn’t disclose the fact that she was taking a job with the company.
Marvel editor-in-chief Axel Alonso’s dismissal of African-American comics fans and creators when asked why...

Kelly Thompson cracks a joke in the opening pages that illuminates the divide of her audience. Techrat asks Pizzazz why he is dressed like a shower and what that has to do with the skeleton costumes she and the Misfits have on. He saw “that movie” and there wasn’t a shower costume or skeletons. Pizzazz responds, “Ohmigod. Shuttup. You clearly saw the remake. Lame.” I expect Jem’s readership divides similarly: those who immediately swooned in recognition of Daniel Larusso’s shower and Cobra Kai’s skeleton costumes from the original Karate Kid, and those who maybe saw the remake with Jaden Smith because they weren’t alive in 1984 (too bad for them). Thompson has a fabulous sense of humor concerning the nostalgia of the 80’s,...

Back to the Future #2
Written by Bob Gale, John Barber & Erik Burnham
Art by Marcelo Ferreira & Chris Madden
Colors (first story) by Diego Rodriguez
Letters by Shawn Lee
Published by Idw Publishing
Continuing the initial issue’s anthology approach to the Back to the Future mythos, this issue features a pair of tales set in two different times: The first chronicles the story behind the destruction of Doc’s family home (hinted at in the first film), while the second depicts a specific moment in Marty and Doc’s friendship, prior to Marty’s initial trip back in time. Both attempt different things and mostly succeed in their endeavors.
The first story, by Bob Gale & John Barber, is set in 1962, during the Cuban Missile Crisis (following another framing device set in the Old West, setting up the story as one told by Doc to his young sons; something we also...

Jem and the Holograms remains the pastel and neon-colored antidote to overconsumption of gritty, dark comics. Cleanse your palate and soul with this charming series. As the middle issue of the “Viral!” arc, #8 has a ballad-slow first half and then starts to rock in the second. Delicious twists in the rising action and humorous character interactions create delightful, pulp-comedy fun.
The first half builds the minor chords of character conflict. The issue opens with Synergy’s redone video for “More, More, More.” Harkening back to Jem’s cartoon days, the band is sporting their 80’s outfits. While it’s a cute nod, the dresses, especially Jem’s, seem lamely anachronistic compared to the improved fashion design Sophie Campbell has been providing. The band,...

Publisher: Idw Publishing
Price: $4
My experience with the world of Chris Carter’s TV shows consists of a few scattered X-Files episodes (specifically ones written by William Gibson or starring Tony Todd) and a half hour of the Millennium pilot (also about fifteen minutes of Harsh Realm). I remember absolutely loving these things but not being able to watch more because up until I was about 16, I wasn’t allowed to watch much TV, and certainly not the scary stuff. By the time I was 16, any interest I might have had in TV was scoured away by my devoted passion to my Super Nes. As I’ve gotten older, my caution in sampling The X-Files and Millennium has been due to the size of the commitment; I know the series are intertwined and that The X-Files...

24 Underground #1 is the first issue of a new series intended to bridge the gap between what was once the final season of Fox’s 24 and its upcoming revival as a “limited event” series, showing us what series hero Jack Bauer has been up to in the intervening years since he was labeled a terrorist and enemy of the state and forced to flee the country for which he’d sacrificed so much. It’s hard to imagine such a series would carry much appeal to any but diehard 24 fans. Unfortunately, there’s not much to this first issue, at least, to either entice anyone else, or please those fans.

Writer: Duane Swierczynski
Art: Nelson Daniel & Steve Scott

Letterer: Shawn Lee
Publisher: Idw & 2000Ad

One of the reasons Judge Dredd has been an iconic character for decades is the series’ ability to mimic any number of styles all within the same city. From sci-fi epics, to thought provoking examinations on the American Dream, Judge Dredd may encompass any style at any given time. But every once in awhile fans are treated to sheer chaos and horror in the form of the Dark Judges. The fan favourites from the 2000 Ad line make the leap over the pond in Idw’s Dredd stable. But is this another classic or are the creative team in over their head?
Writer Duane Swierczynski wastes no time in getting to the carnage. From page one to the very end, Mega-City One is engulfed in chaos.

This is a great time to be alive! Not only are we in a new golden age of comic books, also known as the ‘creator-age’ but television shows long thought lost are springing to life right before our eyes. While some television shows are dragged out, all but ruining any good will—ahem Dexter, some burn so bright for such a short time that they never really leave the collective conscience. The tale of Samurai Jack is one of those television shows.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with the awesomeness that is Samurai Jack, the story is a simple one. Actually let’s do this verbatim (note– please read this in your best Mako voice):

With over 30+ years of continuity 2000Ad’s Judge Dredd is a tough cookie to crack. Everything is relevant and nothing has been retconned. This works well for fans of the series, and extremely well for those who have put in the time to catch up *pats self on back* but what about those of you who have neither the time nor money? Luckily Idw and their successful team up with 2000Ad have brought Judge Dredd successfully to the comic stands in a number of new and accessible ways. One of those ways is the wonderfully enjoyable Judge Dredd: Year One from 2000Ad superstar Matt Smith.
Everything is seemingly normal in Mega City One– as normal as it ever gets, until the youth being showing signs of telekenisis.

Steven Soderbergh retired from filmmaking, but maybe that wasn't the death knell for breezy, adult-oriented cinema that everyone had feared. Not, at least, with George Clooney around. Hollywood's most well-liked actor assembled an all-star cast for his upcoming true-life caper film "Monuments Men" (among them: Matt Damon, Bill Murray, Jean Dujardin, Cate Blanchett, John Goodman and Bob Balaban), which looks like an amalgam of "Ocean's 11," "Inglourious Basterds" and "Argo." Clooney directed and co-wrote "Monuments Men," making him a prime contender to become the Ben Affleck of the 2014 Oscar season. Watch the "Monuments Men" trailer above. Your new favorite movie is out on Dec. 18.

One of the biggest overlooked pieces of information dropped by last week’s blowout was that for the first time ever, Grand Theft Auto will be getting its own original musical score. Historically, Rockstar Games have an exemplary record when it comes to implementing music into their games: whether it’s Shawn Lee’s expert percussion work from Bully or Bill Elm & Woody Jackson’s marvellous atmospheric composition for Red Dead Redemption, they know how to hit the right notes. And this is never more palpable than when it comes to their iconic radio stations.
Beyond the gameplay, the graphics and the missions, the heart of a Grand Theft Auto game lies with its radio stations. As they have shown time and time again, Rockstar are a developer who understand the importance of a video game soundtrack: much of the ambience and memories created are by virtue of the presence of its music.

Why yes, it is "an online, team based, action arena game with RPG elements" featuring a group of grade school students fending off the undead. More information about this PC/Mac title after the jump.
Massive Black wants to take gamers back to middle school with their project which has a goal of $100,000, and is currently at about 12% of their target with 34 days to go. The developers describe their game as a mix of third-person shooter and action RPG featuring character progression and unlockable abilities along with weapon and clothing upgrades for your tiny zombie-killing terrors.
The development team is made up of BioWare vets (Jason Chan, Senior Artist, who gets top billing in the About section), and music producers/artists Aesop Rock and Shawn Lee. Massive Black isn't exactly an indie startup, though, the San Francisco studio having provided development support on titles like Infamous 2, and most recently, Starhawk.

Well, Kenny fucking Powers will be pitching his last innings in "Eastbound & Down" as the show winds up its third and final season with a only a few more episodes to go. But you'll still have the opportunity to keep that good time feeling going all summer long.
Fat Possum Records is set to drop a nice two-disc soundtrack to the series, featuring a handful of songs played through the show's twenty-one episodes. No surprise, this one is heavy on the rock 'n roll with tracks from folks like The Black Keys, The Stooges, MC5, The Animals, Ram Jam and more. There is a bit of country lovin' with Kenny Rogers and Lee Hazelwood, some hip hop with Too Short and 'Lil Wyte and even an obscure R&B tune by Brenton Wood.
Finer retails will carry the collection on April 24th. Full tracklist below. [Prefix]

[Prefix]

Story by Mike Costa, James Roberts
Script by Mike Costa

Letters by Shawn Lee

Idw Publishing
Release Date: October 19, 2011
Cover Price: $3.99
After reading issue Transformers #27 and Loving it, I have to admit, Transformers #28 was a bit of a let down. It was by no means terrible or unreadable or anything even close to that. But, it did have a couple of problems that kept me from enjoying it as much as I wanted to.
Story-wise, this issue is a lot of fun. Cover to cover action and it features what most of us Transformers fans love -- no humans! Mike Costa and James Roberts deliver what every Tf fan wants -- all-out war between the Autobots and Decepticons -- with a few really nice twists thrown in for good measure. All of our favorite characters each get an equal amount of "screen time,...

I chose H.P. Lovecraft's The Dunwich Horror #1 to review just because I'm a fan of Lovecraft. I was quite happy to find that Joe R. Lansdale had written the script for the first story in this comic. I've met him several times since he lives in the same small Texas town as I do. Both the stories were entertaining and as dark as you would expect from a Lovecraftian piece.
The first story, the self titled The Dunwich Horror is obviously just the beginning to a great horror story. The first few pages contain no dialogue but are there to set the mood.

Price: $3.99
There are a lot of comics out right now that deal with fantastic people with amazing powers who are, well, kind of jerks. The Cape #2 (of 4) for Idw Publishing is another one of these books, and it is also one seriously messed up comic. I mean, there is some really freaky stuff going on in this book. And you know what? I don’t have a problem with that because it is one well done comic. How The Cape sets itself apart from books like Irredeemable is that while it has some superhero elements, it is more of a grounded story with normal characters and a situation that many can identify with [...]...

Simply put, reading this comic makes you remember just how much fun you had seeing Ghostbusters for the first time in the theater. One of the things I love about this series so far, and it's only 2 issues in, is that it feel like a natural continuation of the film franchise. There's no reboot, not pre-first film story going on. In fact, the boys actually have to deal with events that happened in the films. Just like in real life, things you do from the past come back to haunt you.
I have to give it to writer Erik Burnham, he packs a lot of story into this issue. This comic is the...

Ok, let's face it, there's a lot of people out there who think licensed comics are inferior. To them, I say pick up a copy of Transformers #27 and then get back to me. This issue has everything you want in a Transformers comic: Autobots wage their battle to destroy the evil forces of the Decepticons.
Writer Mike Costa and Idw set the stage right off the back with a Recap page!!!! People argue that the recap of the storyline should be told in the first few pages of the comic, but Why waste the time when you've got so much story to tell? It's a great, single paragraph that brings you up to date on what's been going on, without...

Written by Cullen Ben and Shawn Lee, with illustrations by Matt Kindt, The Tooth stands as a perfect example of why we Need small publishers like Oni and Red 5 Comics. The Tooth is a wonderful story, but one which defies easy categorization and clearly flies in the face of what the Big Two/Three traditionally publish. With an almost scribbled-in-a-school-notebook texture to the art, and a playfully fun introduction, The Tooth eschews current comic formatting. Yet, its homage 60’s ads imbue the book with a retro-classic comic element that honours the very comics that Marvel and DC once put out.
The Tooth is… a tooth. Incredibly hard, tough, and strong, the character is not born woven into a confusing, continuity-laden comic universe, but instead, seems to be straight from the wondrous and innocent imagination of a 10 year old. The artistic style heightens this effect by portraying the characters in a non-exaggerated,...

Shawn Lee records and releases albums at a pace that few beside Robert Pollard could match, but at least Lee tries to make each one distinctive. His latest, Sing A Song, features vocalists on every track, and leaves aside Lee’s usual internationalist “soundtrack jazz” in favor of retro soul that wouldn’t sound too out of place on Daptone—that is, if Daptone were more interested in psychedelic-ified ’70s R&B rather than the sweaty, rootsy ’60s kind. Not that Lee stays completely committed to the bit; “Fade Up” has a spacey, futuristic feel, while the oddball ballad “I ...

Rockstar Games' "Grand Theft Auto 4: The Ballad of Gay Tony" doesn't seem to have provoked nearly the the amount of controversy that the boy-on-boy kissing of "Bully" originally did when the game first appeared on the PlayStation 2. The company many have a second shot at testing the waters of public opinion once again with their private school-set franchise, as "Bully 2" may be be in development.
"It looks like I will be doing the soundtrack for 'Bully 2' in the not so distant future….," composer Shawn Lee told The Gaming Liberty.
Lee worked on the soundtrack for the first "Bully" as well, so he would be a sensible choice to bring back for the unconfirmed sequel. Rockstar neither confirmed nor denied that that "Bully 2" exists.
