As a big fan of both found-footage horror movies and anthology horror movies, I have always loved the V/H/S series of films. They’ve introduced genre fans to some fantastic new directors, while also featuring fantastic shorts from some of the best horror directors going. There’s been so many great segments and it seems like a great idea to make this seventh instalment a little more science fiction-influenced.
There are six segments this time around. The start is obviously part of the wraparound and introduces a documentary about UFOs and aliens.
The first segment in V/H/S Beyond proper is titled ‘Stork’ from director Jordan Downey and is based on artwork by Oleg Vdovenko.

The found footage horror anthology V/H/S/Beyond is split into six segments, but not all of them are as entertainingly terrifying as the rest. V/H/S/Beyond is the seventh installment in the V/H/S franchise, and it makes a name for itself by focusing its horror on tales of extraterrestrial life and aliens. That means its segments can range in scope from intergalactic travel to a single, strange doggy daycare, and it also means the film can vary significantly from segment to segment.
V/H/S/Beyond has seven directors, though there are only six segments, as the segment "Fur Babies" was co-directed by Christian and Justin Long. Each of the filmmakers took a very different approach to their short films, and the result is a varied and surprising anthology. V/H/S/Beyond also had a massive cast, one that changed considerably between segments. Any movie that has as much variety in tone, subject, and style as V/H/S/Beyond does,...

Many a horror franchise has been temporarily goosed by an injection of sci-fi — even the slasher at the center of the “Friday the 13th” series went into orbit in the 2001 “Jason X” — but that element doesn’t do a lot to distinguish “V/H/S/Beyond.” This seventh entry in the ersatz found-footage omnibus series should be another reliable draw for genre platform Shudder, where it begins streaming Oct. 4. And the ongoing overall enterprise continues to have value as a launching pad for up-and-coming talents. But despite its new thematic wrinkle, the five segments here feel familiar in ideas and unmemorable in execution. It’s a middling addition to a variably inspired anthology brand that will no doubt trundle on through more installments yet.

The V/H/S franchise started in 2012 and fizzled out after three entries, but Shudder’s relaunch in 2021 proved popular enough to make a new anthology horror flick a yearly October tradition. This year’s release, V/H/S/Beyond, is incredibly refreshing, taking the franchise in a very different direction to exciting and gripping results.
V/H/S/Beyond Review
While the past few entries of V/H/S have all been centered around a specific year, Beyond is (for the most part) focused on sci-fi and aliens. While it’s less of a unique concept — there have been plenty of sci-fi/horror anthologies — the team of filmmakers that have been assembled for V/H/S/Beyond has knocked it out of the park, delivering one of the best entries not just in the franchise but in the genre as a whole.

In the 12 years since the release of its flagship film, the V/H/S franchise has spawned six sequels, a pair of spinoffs, and a forgotten miniseries (released exclusively on Snapchat). Following last year's V/H/S/85, the latest installment in the found-footage horror series is V/H/S/Beyond, a collection of segments based on aliens and featuring some of the franchise's best and gnarliest special effects to date.
Presented as a fake documentary about aliens, each segment of V/H/S/Beyond is broken up by talking-head interviews with experts, including a longtime believer and scholar and a trio of YouTubers who specialize in visual effects and make a living by debunking purported UFO footage. That ideological balance is thoughtful if somewhat extraneous in a horror anthology whose primary goal is to maximize thrills and chills, as Beyond often does.
Beyond Begins with 3 Quick & Fun Face-Melting Entries
V/H/S/Beyond 3.5/5 HorrorSci-Fi

I’m a fan of Kickstarter. In fact, I share Mark Cuban’s opinion about the crowd funding platform.
“Kickstarter should be a requirement for every startup. It’s a way for you create demand and sell the product without giving up any equity. That is a compliment to what an investor might do. In terms of Privte Equity, there are strategic investors and then there’s just money. I’m not a big fan of money investors, which is what most angel investors turn out to be, because they just want their money back.”
Kickstarter cool kids are always coming at me asking them to show them some love here on the site. So instead writing separate articles about each, I’m going to showcase some cool projects that I not only personally backed, but feel our readers might back as well.
