Stephen King has reviewed Apple TV+'s best sci-fi show, making it hard not to believe Lost finally has two perfect replacements. Created by Jeffrey Lieber, J. J. Abrams, and Damon Lindelof, Lost was one of the most expensive TV shows of its time, with its first episode costing more than $14 million. Fortunately, the show's incredible production value and massive roster also offered massive returns after it went on to become one of the most celebrated "mystery box" shows of all time.
Although Lost's ending was divisive, the ABC series is still ranked among the greatest television shows by many viewers and critics. Owing to this, even though many shows have been compared to Lost in the past, not many have been able to match the highs it achieved during its long run. However, as Stephen King's review for Apple TV+'s best sci-fi show suggests, Lost might finally have two worthy competitors,...

As a television show draws to an end, its scriptwriters find themselves confronted with the need to tie up any loose narrative threads for their main characters, in order to provide a fitting conclusion and a satisfactory sense of closure. There's arguably no tidier way to conclude a character's narrative arc than by killing them off, a tried and tested method of storytelling that lends an inimitable air of finality to proceedings. Accordingly, the final season of a television show presents a prime opportunity to kill off its main characters like no other.
While a host of standout shows killed their main characters early in proceedings and still went on to find great success, many of the best television shows ever conceived prefer to save the most prominent character deaths for their last season. Steadily building to some of the greatest series finales of all time, these fatality-loaded final television...

The premise of Sherwood Schwartz's popular 1964 sitcom "Gilligan's Island" is handily explained in its theme song: five passengers check into a three-hour boat tour, run by the skipper and first mate of a tiny tourist boat called the S.S. Minnow. The ship hits some bad weather and is thrown miles off course, landing on an uncharted desert isle. The seven tourists become seven stranded castaways. No phones, no lights, no motorcars, not a single luxury. Like "Robinson Crusoe," it's as primitive as can be. The septet have to learn to live together, usually to comedic effect.
Gilligan (Bob Denver) was the above-mentioned first mate, and his innocent cluelessness and tendency to bumble often thwarted the castaways' ability to escape. He shared the island with his Skipper (Alan Hale), a professor (Russell Johnson), a pair of married millionaires (Natalie Schafer and Jim Backus), a farmer (Dawn Wells), and a...

20 years ago, “Lost” premiered on ABC and made TV history.
The series premiere was already the most expensive TV pilot ever made, but from the moment Jack (Matthew Fox) opened his eye in the pilot created by Damon Lindelof, J.J. Abrams, and Jeffrey Lieber, nothing would ever be the same. Over the course of six seasons and 121 episodes, “Lost” earned Emmys and accolades, amassed a hugely dedicated and intrepid fanbase, and changed the television landscape.
A lot has changed in the two decades since that series premiere. For some, the show’s legacy was tarnished by later seasons and particularly the Season 6 finale (agree to disagree). More troublingly, writers and actors from the “Lost” heyday have spoken out about what they found to be a sexist, racist, and generally toxic work environment. Actor Harold Perrineau was actually speaking honestly about his experiences back when he was still a series regular,...

When the pilot of "Lost" aired on ABC in September of 2004, it became an instant hit for the network and catapulted its sprawling cast to stardom in the process. Created by J.J. Abrams alongside Jeffrey Lieber and Damon Lindelof — the last of whom would eventually become a co-showrunner with Carlton Cuse — "Lost" begins in the immediate aftermath of a massive plane crash on a deserted island, but things quickly get very, very complicated. When Oceanic flight 815 crashes on that island while traveling from Sydney to Los Angeles, the audience is introduced to the survivors ... and throughout the first season, they all get a closer look through flashbacks set before they ever boarded the doomed flight.
I should say this up-front: the cast of "Lost" is huge, so not every single important character will get a spotlight here. As far as the core cast is concerned,...

It’s been almost 20 years to the day since “Lost” premiered on ABC (September 22), which means the drama series created by J.J. Abrams, Damon Lindelof, and Jeffrey Lieber is once again making TV headlines for its major anniversary. To celebrate two decades of a show that undeniably changed the television landscape, TV critics Emily St. James and Noel Murray penned “Lost: Back to the Island,” a series of essays taking readers through the series one episode at-a-time from pilot to finale.
With over 100 essays and 40 that are intentionally longer to add further context to key moments in the series, Murray and St. James mirror the journey of viewers watching “Lost” for the first time. This is not a show whose ending perfectly mirrored the beginning, but it was also not borne of a time when shows like that were the norm. With its chronological analysis, “Back to the Island” illustrates...

A boy with psychic abilities, Walt drew the attention of viewers since season 1 but was soon left unattended, raising questions that even the creators admit they were never fully prepared to answer.

I know it doesn’t feel like 2004 was 20 years ago, but it was, which means many great TV shows just turned 20 years old.
Seriously, 2004 is a sneaky good year for new TV premieres. Most of the titles on this list of good TV shows turning 20 years old in 2024 were broadcast hits. The cable networks had a decent market share in the early 2000s, but we’re still a decade before the streaming industry changed the TV game.
At this point in TV history, we’re still seven years before the Game of Thrones premiere. Remember that, please!
Let’s get the list started with the best show of 2004!

While the 1990s are synonymous with sitcoms and off-beat, monster-of-the-week dramas, the most influential TV shows of the 2000s had their own defining traits. Looking at the early aughts, there’s a clear paradigm shift in the types of shows and characters people consumed (and DVR’d). While new seasons of ‘90s classics like Seinfeld and The X-Files waned, HBO, AMC, and other cable networks cultivated the last great generation of shows before the streaming era fully took hold.
Instead of wholesome multi-camera sitcoms, comedies tended toward more self-aware and dry humor, delivered by characters who actually seemed to exist outside their weekly escapades. Meanwhile, on the drama front, audiences saw the rise of the anti-hero — not just in the form of Tony Soprano-style mobsters, but in more “everyman” characters who made poor, unlikeable choices, too. Not to mention, other boundary-pushing shows played with genre and story structure in...

News of the strike, which takes effect later this evening, came late Monday after the guild’s negotiations with the AMPTP failed to reach an agreement on a new film and scripted TV contract. It’s the WGA’s first strike since the 100-day walkout of 2007-08.

Some expressed fear but that was quickly replaced by resolve, as scribes encouraged fellow members to ignore the spin “that’s already coming out.”

Harold Perrineau reconsiders Lost's divisive ending in a surprisingly positive way. Created by Jeffrey Lieber, J.J. Abrams, and Damon Lindelof, the series premiered on ABC back in 2004 and quickly became a hit. Following the survivors of Oceanic Airlines Flight 815, Lost explores the mysterious island they became stranded on and uses flashbacks to reveal more about their lives prior to the crash. Perrineau portrayed Michael Dawson, who was able to leave with his son at the end of season 2. However, he eventually returned to the island and was killed during an explosion.
In a recent interview with ComicBook.com about his MGM+ series From, Perrineau discusses the ending of Lost. He was originally upset with how Michael's story concluded and the show's ending as a whole. After some time though, the actor notes that he was able to acknowledge the kind of "ride" Lost was creating over the course of six seasons.

Evangeline Lilly, who starred as Kate Austen on Lost, explains why she still cringes while watching early seasons of the series. Created by J.J. Abrams, Damon Lindelof, and Jeffrey Lieber, Lost was a sci-fi drama series that ran from 2004 to 2010. The critically acclaimed show followed the survivors of an airliner crash on a mysterious island, and was known for its use of flashbacks, flashforwards, and "flash-sideways" to alternate timelines. Though Lost only ran for six seasons, it has had a lasting impact on genre television and popular culture as a whole.
In an interview with the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Lost star Evangeline Lilly says that re-watching early seasons of the show make her cringe.

The voice that says "previously" at the beginning of most Lost episodes is actually a homage to one of the many figures behind the show's success. Numerous names, in fact, deserve credit for Lost's status as one of the most beloved TV shows of all time. Firstly, there's Jeffrey Lieber, J.J. Abrams, and Damon Linedelof, who are all remembered as the three creators of the series. Alongside Lindelof, Carlton Cuse served as co-showrunner throughout Lost's six-season run on ABC.
One person, who was heavily involved in the show's conception but never had an official, creative role, is the voice behind the show's "previously on Lost" line. Like many other cable shows, Lost typically kicked off each episode with a recap of earlier events that were relevant to what was about to happen in the episode. These recaps began with a voice that said, "previously on Lost."

Lost contains one of the most divisive endings to any TV show in history, which is undoubtedly saved by the series' most crucial aspect. Lost aired on ABC between 2004 and 2010 and ran for six seasons with creators Jeffrey Lieber, J.J. Abrams, and Damon Lindelof. After its six-season run, Lost's series finale began being counted among the most divisive TV endings, an argument that has remained to this day.
Despite this divisive ending, Lost is saved by one crucial aspect. The overall story of Lost remains engaging throughout its six seasons, with the reason why linking intrinsically to this one critical element of the show. With that being said, here is the main reason why ABC's early-2000s network show Lost works in terms of the overall show, why the quality of its ending is undisputable, and why a reboot is not necessary.

Before Lost became one of the most commercially successful shows on television, ABC was convinced that the series would fail. Spanning six seasons between 2004 and 2010, Lost creators J. J. Abrams and Damon Lindelof wove an intricate and detailed story that built a loyal following. As the recipient of hundreds of major award nominations, numerous wins, and often giving ABC its highest ratings, Lost is regularly regarded as being among the greatest TV shows of all time, quickly becoming a cultural phenomenon and boosting its ensemble cast to super-stardom.
Filmed in a highly serialized manner with a massive ensemble cast featuring the likes of Matthew Fox, Evangeline Lilly, and Dominic Monaghan, Lost revolutionized the world of television. Many subsequent TV shows, including the likes of Netflix's 1899, have tried to be the new Lost, recreating the magic of the series, though none have managed to cultivate the same cultural impact. Netflix has canceled 1899 after only one season, which all but proves that no TV series can be the new Lost. From the creators of Dark, Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar, 1899 premiered on Netflix in November 2022, with the ambition for the series to run for three full seasons. The plot involved the mysterious story of a group of European emigrants traveling from the United Kingdom to the United States, who soon realized that all was not as it seemed. 1899 became a quick hit for Netflix but was nevertheless canceled after its first season, leaving many questions unanswered.
Many compared the mystery and international scope of 1899 to Lost, which aired on ABC between 2004 and 2010 and featured an ensemble cast uncovering the secrets of an unusual island over six seasons. ABC has given out a pilot order to a legal drama currently titled “Judgement.”
Per the official logline, the show is “a high-stakes legal soap that redefines the genre by playing out over two timelines. Fifteen years from now, a woman being vetted for a Supreme Court seat recounts her experience at a prominent D.C. law firm in 2023, where the only thing more controversial than the cases was her messy love life, caught between two feuding brothers. Now, with a Supreme Court seat on the line, all of her darkest secrets are at risk of coming out, threatening her nomination, her reputation, and her marriage.”
Joey Falco is the writer and executive producer of the pilot. Melvin Mar and Jake Kasdan will executive produce via The Detective Agency. Jordan Cerf of Mosaic will also executive produce. 20th Television, where The Detective Agency is under an overall deal, will produce.

It seems one of the original Charmed writers isn't bewitched by their successors. The Charmed revival's season four finale aired on June 10, marking the end of the series. In the finale, Mel (Melonie Diaz), Maggie (Sarah Jeffery) and Kaela (Lucy Barrett) discover a portal to Halliwell Manor, where Piper (Holly Marie Combs), Phoebe (Alyssa Milano), Prue (Shannen Doherty) and Paige (Rose McGowan) lived in the original show. As executive producer Joey Falco told TVLine, "We wanted to eventually tie these universes together." The CW reboot of Charmed might have wrapped up its four-season run on Friday, June 10, but the show’s executive producers, Joey Falco and Jeffrey Lieber, have revealed where the story would have gone next. “Even though this show has ended, these ladies’ journey doesn’t end,” Falco told TVLine. “They’re still fighting. We weren’t going to end with them sitting around a table reading stories to their grandkids like the original show did. The battle continues, which is where we want to leave the audience. They’re still out there fighting.” One of those future stories would have seen Mel taking over the Blue Camellia magic club. “That’s probably the sweet spot between the Mel who was the angry activist at the beginning of the show and the Mel who found herself along the way,” said Liber. “That’s be the perfect place for her to...

Now, that's how you get fans talking.
For four seasons, The CW's Charmed reboot has forged its own path, taking viewers well away from the world of the original series.
However, Friday's emotional series finale concluded with one of the most shocking scenes ever.
The Charmed ones - Mel, Maggie, and Kaela - found a mysterious door that gave them pause.
“Are we sure about this? Another world? Other Charmed Ones?” Mel asked.
On the other side of the door, the witches found themselves at Halliwell Manor, aka the setting for the original series, which starred Holly Marie Combs, Shannen Doherty, Rose McGowan, and Alyssa Milano.
The sisters vowed to see who lived in the iconic location.
It was quite the scene -- and set-up -- for another season.
Unfortunately, fans will be waiting with bated breaths because The CW canceled the series after four seasons, meaning there will likely never be resolution.

With the news that The CW has canceled around half of their scripted shows, there's a silver lining for fans of Charmed.
The series, under the leadership of Jeffrey Lieber, Joey Falco and Nicki Renna, has crafted its best season yet, so it's unfortunate that it's being canceled in its prime.
However, the Charmed writers social media account shared Thursday night, hours after the cancellation announcement, that they worked towards closure with the season finale.
"As you can tell by the amount of change happening today, we -- the writers -- were always aware that cancellation was possible," reads the Tweet.
"As such, we wrote toward closure. Meaning, we're not leaving you hanging."
"Moreover, there are some really, really, really cool things happening right up to the final frame."
"So, if you've been with us, and are willing to stay with us, we promise you won't be left in the lurch.
