Larry Saltzman isn’t a guitar teacher by trade — he’s a high-end session pro who’s toured with Simon and Garfunkel, played in Saturday Night Live‘s house band, and backed up artists from Jewel to Darlene Love to Celine Dion. But for the past decade or so, he’s been moonlighting as a tutor to A-list actors, most recently bringing Timothée Chalamet from near-zero guitar proficiency to the point where he was able to play for real as Bob Dylan in his Oscar-nominated A Complete Unknown performance — and...

Warning: Contains Spoilers for Carry-On!
Netflix's Carry-On is finally here, and here is a full breakdown of the film's soundtrack and every song that appears. Netflix's Carry-On is a new crime thriller starring Taron Egerton and Jason Bateman, with the tense film coming from The Shallows director Jaume Collet-Serra. Despite the film's high stakes and serious tone, Carry-On is also a Christmas movie, with it featuring trees, snow, lights, and many other pieces of Christmas iconography. Like any good Christmas movie, Carry-On also features a lot of Christmas music, with plenty of iconic holiday songs making their way into the film.
2024's Carry-On follows Taron Egerton's Ethan Kopek, a Tsa agent who gets the opportunity to finally monitor the bag check at the airport ahead of Christmas Day. Unfortunately, this is also the day that Jason Bateman's mysterious villain (known only as the Traveler) appears, with him telling...

Plot: A mysterious traveler blackmails a young Tsa agent into letting a dangerous package slip through security and onto a Christmas Day flight.
Review: I will always have a soft spot for airplane thrillers. Whether it’s Red Eye, Air Force One, or even Die Hard 2, the airport/airplane is a dynamic setting. The cameras, the security, the massive amounts of people of all backgrounds moving through the space; there’s a lot of potential. Especially when it comes to a thriller. So I was excited to hear that we’d be getting a new airport action/thriller. Unfortunately, Carry On takes a very long time to get going and doesn’t have nearly enough action beats to justify the runtime.

"Well – I'm gonna have to do it sooner or later, so might as well get on with it, baby..." Netflix has unveiled the official trailer for an upcoming music history documentary called Return of the King: The Fall & Rise of Elvis Presley, set for streaming in November this fall. They don't specify if it is one feature-length film or a doc mini-series. Return of the King chronicles the life of Elvis but, in particular, tells the sotry of his 1968 Comeback Special that aired on NBC and marked his return to live music after 7 years focused on his rather mediocre acting career. "He had one chance to show the world he was still the King of Rock 'n' Roll." Apparently it is approved by his estate because Graceland posted about it, too. With appearances by Bruce Springsteen, Conan O'Brien, Billy Corgan, Darlene Love, even his ex-wife, Priscilla Presley, and Elvis movie director Baz Luhrmann.

In Chris Columbus' holiday musical "The Christmas Chronicles 2," Kurt Russell plays Santa Claus, a jolly tough guy living in connubial bliss with Mrs. Claus (Goldie Hawn) at the North Pole. The film reunites Santa with Kate (Darby Camp) and Jack (Jahzir Bruno), the stars from the first film. While they visit the cozy Claus home, a bitter ex-elf named Belsnickel (Julian Dennison) attempts to steal a magical Christmas Tree Star from Santa's village, throwing the future of Christmas into question. Santa, you see, needs the star to freeze time on Christmas night and provide the power needed to keep his village running. It will be up to the kids and the Clauses to recruit the help of Turkish forest elves (represented by Malcolm McDowell) and retrieve the stolen star.
The film has a notable scene in an airport where Russell got to sing a huge soul number called "The Spirit of Christmas...

Former Sun Yee On triad member Jimmy Tsui criticizes Lethal Weapon 4's unrealistic portrayal of one of the mafia characters. Lethal Weapon 4 is the lowest-rated film in the franchise, with a 52% score on Rotten Tomatoes and a lower box office performance than Lethal Weapon 3. Lethal Weapon 5 is in development with Mel Gibson taking over as director following Richard Donner's death.
A former mafia member breaks down a key fight in Mel Gibson's Lethal Weapon 4. Released in 1998, Lethal Weapon 4 is the fourth film in the action franchise that began with Lethal Weapon in 1987. The fourth installment features the return of LAPD officer Martin Riggs as he confronts Chinese mobsters this time. In addition to Gibson, Lethal Weapon 4 features a leading cast including Danny Glover, Joe Pesci, Rene Russo, Chris Rock, Jet Li, Steve Kahan, Kim Chan, Darlene Love, Traci Wolfe, and Eddy Ko.

Beverly Hills Cop is one of the best and most iconic franchises in the action comedy genre, and most of the credit for that goes to its leading man, Eddie Murphy. Created by Danilo Bach and Daniel Petrie Jr., the first film in the franchise came out in 1984, and now, with the fourth film coming out nearly thirty years after the third and the worst film in the franchise came out, the hype for the franchise and its iconic theme song is back on the top. So, if you loved Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, here are some more great action comedy films you could watch next.

Fast Times at Ridgemont High is a classic 1980s movie that has stood the test of time. One of the reasons for its enduring popularity is the memorable soundtrack that accompanies the film. The Go-Go's "We Got the Beat" kicks off the movie and its upbeat pop style helps set the tone. The Tom Petty classic "American Girl" helps present Stacy as the true lead character of the movie and establishes this as her coming-of-age story.
The Fast Times at Ridgemont High soundtrack is full of great songs by such legendary musical artists as Led Zeppelin and Stevie Nicks. The movie charts a year in the lives of a group of students at the titular high school as they endure strict teachers, entry-level jobs, and awkward early sexual encounters. Clay Kaytis' 2018 family film "The Christmas Chronicles" has a pretty typical plot for a Christmas movie. A pair of mischievous kids (Judah Lewis and Darby Camp) catch Santa Claus (Kurt Russell) delivering gifts on Christmas Eve, and stow away on his sleigh. Their subterfuge, however, causes the sleigh to crash, scattering Santa's ephemera across Chicago. Santa and the two kids will have to work overtime to retrieve Santa's magical belongings -- his reindeer, his hat, and his gift bag -- so that he may deliver all his gifts by Christmas morning. Like in many kids' movies, the kids are mourning the loss of a parent, so "Chronicles" is also about regaining hope and realizing that childhood magic still exists in a world of grief.

After last week saw the return of larger-than-life series like “The Boys” and “House of the Dragon,” this week is all about real life, and by that I mean the new releases worth watching are all of the non-fiction variety. If that’s not for you, there are new episodes of the aforementioned shows to watch. But if you’re curious about the world, there is quite the buffet awaiting you, beginning with Amazon’s “Federer: Twelve Final Days.”
Now, it can be argued that one of the greatest athletes of all time (and perhaps the greatest men’s tennis player in history) deserved a longer farewell tour and accompanying documentary, but it’s too late for that. Stars Will Smith and Martin Lawrence return to reprise their iconic roles of Detective Mike Lowery and Detective Marcus Miles Burnett, and once again, both of their characters get into some tricky situations, and the only way to get out is some cool action sequences and hilarious comedic bits. Stevie Van Zandt is full of contradictions, but owns them. The E Street Band member, songwriter, activist and producer is uncompromising when it comes to creative ideas, charging forward on a vision even when it leads to commercial dead ends. Yet he’s also an insider’s insider with a rolodex of heavyweight artists, executives and directors willing to sing his praises or line him up to punch up a song or a soundtrack.
He’s burned bridges — yes, including walking out on Bruce Springsteen’s group right before Born In the U.S.A.’s big payday; going all-in on a solo career that, in his own words, yielded no hits — yet also mended them. His late-career renaissance as an actor, plucked out by David Chase to be Sil on The Sopranos, looks less improbable when realizing that Van Zandt always seems to have a few irons in the fire.

She’s late-night royalty thanks to her record 21 performances of “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” on David Letterman’s NBC and CBS shows, but Darlene Love says she isn’t feeling the love from Jimmy Fallon’s Tonight Show.

For 28 years, it was a holiday tradition for Darlene Love to perform her signature hit “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” on David Letterman’s late night shows, but that all came to an end when he went off air in 2015. Now, they’ve reunited for Letterman’s YouTube channel to pick up where they left off.
Before Love sang “Christmas” with accompaniment from Letterman’s longtime band leader Paul Shaffer on piano, they all had a chat about the tradition. Letterman also asked Love about recently performing the song with Cher during the Rockefeller Center tree lighting special.
This prompted Love to air out her feelings about never being asked to play the song solo for the annual ceremony. “Do you know they wouldn’t hire me for that?” she said, noting that other artists have performed the track instead.

Two months have passed since Cher released her floor-thumping yuletide anthem “DJ Play a Christmas Song,” and the request finally reached The Kelly Clarkson Show’s house band on Tuesday. The show’s host, who is a Christmas Queen herself, crooned and belted the neo-disco tune (in bellbottoms!) during the “Kellyoke” portion of her show. When the chorus came in, she beamed a smile brighter than Rudolph’s nose: “DJ play a Christmas song, I wanna be dancing all night long.”

Darlene Love’s annual television performance of “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” was essentially orphaned after “Late Show With David Letterman” went off the air in 2015, putting an end to the 28-year streak that had the music legend singing her signature holiday song with Paul Shaffer’s band on Letterman’s last original show before Christmas each December. But they all reunited — not over the air, but on YouTube — for a resumption of the tradition, nine years after the last time this particular caroling took place on CBS.
Watch the video, below.
Love has sung the modern standard she originated on “The View,” but her song has not had a regular nighttime slot since 2014. She recently sang it on the Rockefeller Center prime-time special with Cher, who also asked Love to perform it with her on her recent Christmas album. Christmas has finally come home: In a sweet, new YouTube video, Darlene Love reunites with David Letterman and Paul Shaffer for the first time in nine years to resume a longtime holiday tradition that capped off the Christmas episodes of Letterman’s late night talk shows for 28 years.
“I hate all novelty holiday songs,” Letterman says in the new video posted on his Letterman YouTube channel. “I hate them. The only one I love is ‘Christmas (Baby Please Come Home).'”
Together again for the first time since the final Christmas episode of Letterman’s Late Show in 2014, Love, Letterman, Shaffer and Late Show executive producer Barbara Gaines chat about the annual performances that resurrected Love’s solo career and became a beloved holiday TV tradition.
The 1963 song, written Ellie Greenwich, Jeff Barry, and Phil Spector and recorded by Love for the compilation album A Christmas Gift for You from Phil Spector,...

U2 unwrapped their rendition of a yuletide classic for the first time in nearly 36 years Friday as the band covered Darlene Love’s “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” at Las Vegas’ Sphere.
U2 had only performed “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” in concert on one other occasion: Back on December 20, 1987, the band closed out their Joshua Tree tour with a gig at Tempe, Arizona’s Sun Devil Stadium. Performances from that show ended up on their Rattle and Hum, and while that night’s “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” wasn’t included on that album,...

The National Film Registry just granted immortality to 25 classic films. Every year, the Library of Congress chooses another class to be preserved for posterity, and this year’s group includes some major blockbusters like “Terminator 2,” “Home Alone,” and “Apollo 13.”
To be eligible, a film must be at least 10 years old and carry what the library considers to be “cultural, historic or aesthetic importance,” in consultation with National Film Preservation Board members and other experts.
The list now stands at 875 remarkable films. If you’d like to nominate your favorite film for preservation, just fill out this form.

Several singers and songwriters have tried to claim the title of “Queen of Christmas” over the years. Depending on your age, you probably have a favorite, ranging from Darlene Love to Dolly Parton.
But Mariah Carey, who tried unsuccessfully to trademark the title (which would have allowed such branding on items ranging from fragrance to dog toys), seems to have given her blessing to Brenda Lee this week.
Carey’s All I Want For Christmas Is You has become ubiquitous since its 1994 launch. But she seems willing to share the spotlight with a predecessor.
She sent flowers after Lee this week topped the Billboard Hot 100 singles charts with her holiday hit, Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree, some 65 years after it was recorded. Lee was just 13 when she recorded the boppy tune. Although it has been on the charts, it never hit No. 1 until this year.

NBC saw solid ratings on Wednesday night with the airing of two Christmas specials
Airing from 8-10 p.m. on Nov. 29, the annual “Christmas in Rockefeller Center” special reached an audience of 7 million people when accounting for three days of delayed viewing across NBC, Peacock and digital platforms. That number, calculated from a combination of Nielsen measurement and NBCUniversal’s proprietary data, marked the best viewership for the Rockefeller Christmas tree lighting since 2020. The special was the most-watched program on TV that night, and improved on last year’s viewership by 7%. In the key adults 18-49 demographic, it earned a strong 0.8 rating.
This year’s “Christmas in Rockefeller Center” was hosted by Kelly Clarkson and featured performances by Chloe Bailey, Adam Blackstone, Cher, David Foster, Liz Gillies, Darlene Love, Seth MacFarlane, Barry Manilow, Katharine McPhee, Keke Palmer, Carly Pearce and Manuel Turizo. Stripped of a handful of tracks filled with contemporary signifiers, Cher’s Christmas could have been released at any point in the singer’s nearly six-decade career. Whether it be a faithful rendition of “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home),” featuring the original queen of Christmas, Darlene Love, or the ingratiating original song “Christmas Ain’t Christmas Without You,” the majority of the album’s 13 tracks opt for a traditional holiday approach.
It’s when Cher and frequent collaborator Mark Taylor steer the project toward the long-dated dance-pop of the pair’s late-’90s smash “Believe” that the sleigh goes off the rails. For one, the album’s paint-by-numbers opening track, “DJ Play a Christmas Song,” is marred by a rudimentary hook—“DJ, play a Christmas song/I wanna be dancing all night long”—and gratuitous Auto-Tune and half-step key change. And the similarly pitched “Angels in the Snow” is only...

Cher is ready to pack her bags if a certain former president finds his way back into the Oval Office. In a broad-ranging interview with the Guardian, the singer was asked how she felt about Donald Trump being potentially re-elected.

She also discussed the issue of trans rights, reflecting on the ongoing pushback from the right and the constant laws being passed against trans people in the U.S.

Earlier this year, Darlene Love picked up the phone and heard a voice on the other end she didn’t quite recognize at first. “Doll, hi!” she heard. “This is Cher.” Love asked her to repeat who was calling. “Cher, bitch!”
She was calling to see if Love would sing “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” with her on her upcoming holiday album Christmas, revisiting a tune they sang together exactly 60 years ago on A Christmas Gift for You From Phil Spector, one of the greatest Christmas albums in music history.

As with most of Martin Scorsese's movies, the Goodfellas music soundtrack adds to the brilliance of the movie with perfectly placed songs. It features a relentless soundtrack full of Italian crooners, American standards, and several classic pop-rock songs. The featured music at once provides a sense of familiarity while underscoring thematic elements and character personalities. Released in 1990, Goodfellas is based on Nicholas Pileggi's 1985 book Wiseguy: Life in a Mafia Family, which documents the experiences of American gangster Henry Hill. It is considered one of Scorsese's best as well as one of the greatest mob movies of all time and the Goodfellas music soundtrack adds to its legacy.
In Goodfellas, Hill (Ray Liotta) recounts 25 years of working for the Lucchese crime family, working alongside mob colleagues Jimmy Conway (Robert De Niro) and Tommy DeVito (Joe Pesci), but knows that he'll never become a "Made Man" due to his lack of pure Italian blood.

While the news was met with silence in the crowd, host Jon Stewart lightened the mood, joking: “They’re alive. Don’t overreact. You can still see them in concert.

As far as Christmas action movies go, most would say John McTiernan’s Die Hard takes the crown as the greatest of all time. However, another action classic that hit theaters a year before, Lethal Weapon, is also set around the holiday. Written by a young Shane Black (using the Christmas setting that would become his trademark), this wound up being perhaps the most influential action movie of all time, maybe even more so than Die Hard (although that’s debatable). While not the first buddy cop movie (older films like Freebie and the Bean and Best Movie You Never Saw fave Running Scared are also part of the genre), it set the tone for many films to follow. There was something so perfect about the pairing of Mel Gibson’s crazed Martin Riggs and Danny Glover’s family man Roger Murtagh, along with Richard Donner’s ace direction. The three men loved each other,...

Singer Mariah Carey will not be able to call herself the legal Queen of Christmas after her trademark requests to claim that phrase as well as “Princess Christmas” and “Qoc” were all denied by the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board.
While Carey certainly has a stranglehold on the Christmas season ever since she released the song “All I Want For Christmas Is You” in 1994, her claim to trademark the Queen of Christmas honorific quickly received backlash from other singers Elizabeth Chan and Darlene Love.
