The crowds of film sellers and buyers are still rolling into Toronto from Venice and Telluride, but the puck dropped Thursday night on the acquisitions marketplace with the premiere of Nutcrackers.
David Gordon Green has taken a detour from genre to serve up a Ben Stiller-starrer that proved a crowdpleaser in two opening-night showings.
That kind of movie — with promising premises with stars and directors with proven track records — is all over the schedule. There is a lot to like in this 2024 TIFF acquisitions market. But I’ve just come from an L.A. visit and cannot recall as bleak a black cloud hangover from the twin strikes of last year. It will take time for the business to recover, and this caution could factor into the dealmaking. Also on the minds of distributors is how elusive box office has become. Comparable films to the ones on sale here...

In 1843, London publishers Chapman & Hall released A Christmas Carol. Written by Charles Dickens and illustrated by John Leech, it was inspired in part by Dickens’s anger at inequality in his country, especially as it affected children. Despite its aversion to the upper classes, A Christmas Carol was an immediate hit among readers and critics. Given the book’s popularity, it’s no surprise that movie makers have picked up on the story many times. Between its clear redemption arc and ghostly premise, the story has everything that a good movie needs.
Still, not every adaptation of A Christmas Carol is created equal. So if you’re looking for the best of the worst man in film and literature, check out these ten great movies. And if you don’t like my picks, well, bah humbug I say.

Ryan Reynolds might be known for lacing the vast majority of his onscreen performances with a rich dose of self-deprecating humor, but the Deadpool star hasn’t actually featured in an out-and-out comedy for close to a decade. While he’s made uncredited cameo appearances in Seth McFarlane’s Ted and A Million Ways to Die in the West, you’d have to go back to 2011’s The Change-Up to find his last comedy vehicle.
Directed by Wedding Crashers‘ David Dobkin, The Change-Up puts an R-rated spin on the body-swap formula as Reynolds’ hedonistic man-child Mitch ends up trading lives and identities with his longtime best friend Dave, with Jason Bateman finding himself in familiar territory as the straight man in a foul-mouthed studio comedy.

A dweeb strikes up a relationship with his female-voiced virtual assistant. Most moviegoers would recognize that as the plot of Spike Jonze’s “Her” — and most would probably say, as well, that Jonze’s cautionary A.I. romantic fantasy, starring Joaquin Phoenix as the depressed loner who comes under the seductive spell of his Siri muse, is the definitive treatment of that subject. But I was my own kind of loner on “Her.” I found the movie to be one-note and monotonous.
It stars Adam DeVine, with his motormouth cuddliness, as Phil, a millennial office-space worker who churns out viral lists of clickbait for a San Francisco-based website. Phil is addicted to his phone, to social media — to anything that puts an invisible filter between himself and the human race. If, for whatever reason, you’re determined to see “Jexi,” you’ll want to arrive with a backup plan. Life is busy, so it’s important to use our time wisely. Perhaps you can mentally balance your checkbook, think through your upcoming schedule, or finally memorize the alphabet backwards. I came up with a long list of all the worthy filmmakers who’ve been unable to make a second movie, or had to struggle for years just to get their first one onscreen.
Although this wasteful effort from the “Bad Moms” team is uninspired in almost every regard, it does advance cinema in a single way: writers-directors Jon Lucas and Scott Moore have figured out how to modernize one of the most traditional and apparently still essential Hollywood tropes: the Crazy Bitch. “Jexi,” which IndieWire can now confirm is the title of a real movie that’s actually playing in theaters and everything, begins with a somewhat intriguing premise: What if Spike Jonze’s “her” had been made for the lowest common denominator? What if it hadn’t been a beloved softboy romance about digital era dislocation, but rather a slapdash comedy about incels (they’re having a moment!) that’s only funny scene featured Wanda Sykes unfavorably comparing smartphone users to crackheads? What if it hadn’t cast Scarlett Johansson as the voice of a sweet A.I. who struggled to balance fragile human emotions with the infinitude of cyberspace, but gone with Rose Byrne as the voice of a cruel, Siri-cold virtual assistant who constantly tormented her user about how ugly his dick looked? See, it’s somewhat intriguing!

Warner Bros/Village Roadshow/Bron Studios’ Joker earned $13.9 million on Tuesday, easily making it the best Tuesday at the October box office and continuing to pummel Sony’s Venom records from a year ago. That movie owned the previous October Tuesday high of $8.2M.
The domestic total for Todd Phillips’ R-rated movie stands at $119.8M through five days, 22% ahead of Venom at the same point in time. Venom ended its run at $213.5M, and as we mentioned over the weekend, industry estimates believe Joker will final around $265M.
Joker also bested a slew of other Tuesday autumn records as well: Similar to its Monday, Joker yesterday came in ahead of the highest September Tuesday, which belongs to It ($11.4M), and when compared to November Tuesdays, the pic is second behind The Hunger Games: Catching Fire ($15.96M).

Adam DeVine's upcoming comedy Jexi imagines a world where a Siri-type artificial intelligence system (voiced by Rose Byrne) goes rogue, deciding that the man who owns the phone she's housed in (DeVine's Phil) is her one true love. Unsurprisingly, she doesn't take kindly to the idea of competition. Nevertheless, sparks begin to fly between Phil - a blogger with few friends and a serious addiction to his phone - and Cate (Alexandra Shipp), the free-spirited owner of a bicycle shop.
In our exclusive clip from the film, which hails from directing team Jon Lucas and Scott Moore, Phil discovers that Jexi isn't the only object standing in his way to dating Cate. As he quickly realizes after stopping by her shop one afternoon, her tall, hunky ex-fiancé (This Is Us star Justin Hartley) is still very much in her life, and the pair have an awkward run-in.

They’re creepy and they’re kooky, mysterious and spooky, they’re all together ooky — but can “The Addams Family” give “Joker” a run for its money at the domestic box office?
MGM’s animated comedy about the notorious macabre kin is debuting in theaters this weekend alongside Paramount’s “Gemini Man,” an action thriller directed by Ang Lee that stars not one, but two Will Smiths, and CBS Films’ comedy “Jexi” with Adam DeVine. Those movies will contend with last weekend’s champ, Warner Bros.’ “The Joker,” Joaquin Phoenix’s very R-rated take on Batman’s infamous foe that launched with $96.2 million in North America.
Despite three new nationwide releases, “Joker” is expected to nab first place on box office charts again. Though comparisons are difficult since the super-villain adaptation is very different in scope than other comic-book origin stories, “Joker” should add another $42 million to $48 million in its sophomore outing.

Adam DeVine‘s co-star in the new comedy “Jexi” is a cell phone, more specifically, a virtual assistant voiced by Rose Byrne.
At the film’s premiere on Thursday in Los Angeles, DeVine told Variety that during filming, for timing, he listened through a crackling earpiece to another actress reading Byrne’s lines.
“It was hard [acting opposite the phone] because it was before [Byrne] recorded,” he said. “It was much harder than it [looks], because half the time those ear pods don’t work as well as you want them to.”
Co-director Jon Lucas told Variety of the scene anatomy, “We had a lot of ideas about how the sound would work. Then our sound guy was like those are all terrible ideas. He was 100% correct, and we were 100% wrong. … Frankly, there were times when [Adam] would just take the earbud out and do the whole scene, his side of the scene, without ever hearing anyone talking.

Rose Byrne, Bobby Cannavale Set For ‘Medea’ At New York’s Bam; Adaptation Taps True-Life Murder Case
Rose Byrne and Bobby Cannavale will star in Simon Stone’s contemporary rewrite of the Euripides’ tragedy Medea at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in January.
Originally staged in 2014 by Amsterdam’s International Theater Amsterdam (formerly Toneelgroep Amsterdam), Medea will pair real-life couple Byrne and Cannavale, with additional cast to be announced.
Stone’s adaptation of the Medea story uses the true-life crime case of American Debora Green, who poisoned her cheating husband and killed two of her three children in 1995. The adaptation played London’s Barbican in 2019, where it starred Marieke Heebink and Aus Greidanus Jr.
Byrne, whose performance on FX’s Damages earned her an Emmy nomination, is currently in production for FX’s limited series Mrs. America, the nine-episode drama in which she plays Gloria Steinem (set for a 2020 premiere). She’ll next be seen in comedy Hostile Makeover (formerly Limited Partners) opposite Tiffany Haddish and Salma Hayek...

Hangover creators Jon Lucas and Scott Moore are credited as the writers and directors of the 2016 hit Bad Moms but a potentially multi-million dollar suit filed by the authors of I’d Trade My Husband For A Housekeeper is laying blame for fraud on producer Suzanne Todd.
“In 2008, Defendant contacted Plaintiffs after seeing them on The Today Show, informing them that they believed there was significant potential to develop their Books and genre insights into films and television series,” the 10-claim complaint from Amy Nobile and Trisha Ashworth submitted against the veteran producer in La Superior Court on June 6 says (read it here). “Defendant’s use is indisputable as the Film uses themes and ideas expounded by Plaintiffs in their books and employs plots, scenes and various ideas Plaintiffs provided to Defendant during the Collaboration Period,” they add of the period up until 2011 when the duo and Todd were supposedly in constant contact.

Christmas is upon us and with every approaching Christmas season, audiences can expect a seasonally themed comedy (or two) to crop up in November/December. This year, in addition to the Daddy’s Home 2 joy, we have a festive sequel to Jon Lucas and Scott Moore’s fine Comedy hit Bad Moms. Unfortunately it seems that A Bad Moms Christmas makes the fundamental error of not actually having many (or arguably any) jokes on show.
The concept is very by the books for festive family fracas fare and sees the three bad matriarchs from the last film – Amy (Mila Kunis), Carla (Kathryn Hahn) and Kiki (Kristen Bell) – prepare for the big show for mums (sorry, ‘moms’)…Christmas. But their job of taking all the stress of the holidays and styling it out will be made even worse this year, as their own mothers – Ruth (Christine Baranski), Sandy (Cheryl Hines) and...

2017-11-03T07:01:56-07:00'Bad Moms Christmas' Off to a Slow Start
The coming weekend is unquestionably going to belong to Thor: Ragnarok, but comedy sequel A Bad Moms Christmas hoped to get a substantial portion of the leftovers. Part of the movie's strategy was to hit the ground running by opening on Wednesday instead of Thursday. Unfortunately, all the early opening did was point out the movie's weaknesses. The sequel, so far, is not measuring up to the original in terms of critics' reviews, audience reactions, or ticket sales.
Via The Hollywood Reporter.
STXfilms' A Bad Moms Christmas debuted to a muted $2.6 million on Wednesday from 3,615 theaters.
The sequel — a follow-up to the 2016 hit comedy Bad Moms — is opening midweek to provide some distance from Thor: Ragnarok, which unfurls everywhere on Friday.

MaryAnn’s quick take… This rushed sequel is an insult to its progenitor movie. A cheap knockoff that doesn’t understand what made Bad Moms so smart, funny, and feminist-wise. I’m “biast” (pro): love the first movie
I’m “biast” (con): the trailer looked awful
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a sequel throw its progenitor movie under a bus the way that A Bad Moms Christmas does. If I hadn’t just rewatched Bad Moms, I would have been doubting what I remembered as a very positive reaction to it last year as I sat through this barrage of nasty, cruel, antiwoman, even antimom garbage. But no: as I had just reminded myself, Bad Moms truly is a terrifically smart and wise movie — and also a very funny one — about the impossible job that modern...

Considering the fact that Stx’s raunchy broad comedy Bad Moms became a surprise summer hit in 2016, it should come as no shock that a sequel would be ordered quickly. Turnaround on the new holiday-themed follow-up, A Bad Mom’s Christmas, was especially fast as Stx has it in theaters starting today, just 15 months after the debut of the original. With director-writers Jon Lucas and Scott Moore back in the driver's seat along with the starring “moms” Mila Kunis, Kathryn Hahn…...

Okay, have you added your jack-o-latern to the compost heap and packed away all the cardboard witches, black cats, and ghosts? Good, cause it’s time to grab the decoration box for the next big holiday (sorry Thanksgiving, aside from the fold-out table top turkey, you’re mainly a big lavish meal followed by hours of football). December will be here before you know it, and this new release tries to add some laughs along with the wreaths. Plus it’s that rare two-for-one flick in that it’s a seasonal celebration and a sequel, just as with The Best Man Holiday from four years ago. And while the holiday is one for families to get together, this new movie is really aimed at the older revelers. It’s rated “R” for raw and rowdy, with jokes and gags much raunchier than the Parkers (from the classic A Christmas Story...

Meet the comedy sequel with more montages than Rocky IV: it's A Bad Moms Christmas...
If you didn’t know going into seeing A Bad Moms Christmas that this was a sequel scrambled together in double-quick time, you could soon figure it out. It’s a hodgepodge of half-formed characters, erratic narrative pace, and parts of story that just about smash together to make something okay. That it does so is no small achievement, but it’s worth stating from the off that the comedy heights of last year’s Bad Moms are rarely troubled.
The idea this time is that the Bad Moms – Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell and Kathryn Hahn – each have their own Bad Moms to put up with. Respectively, they get Christine Baranski, Cheryl Hines and Susan Sarandon. Baranski gets to play the overbearing, everything has to be perfect one. Hines is the clingy, living her life through her daughter mother.

Sometimes, only sometimes, Hollywood serves up exactly what its audiences asks for. Just last summer, many of us asked for “Bad Moms” breakout Kathryn Hahn to gain more recognition for her comedic chops. But not like this: Enter “A Bad Moms Christmas,” a fast-tracked, holiday-themed sequel to the surprise smash hit (nearly $185 million worldwide) that giddily plays up all the worst impulses of Hahn’s indelible character Carla, culminating with the Emmy nominee spouting off the year’s most eye-popping line: “It was almost like waxing the balls of the Dalai Lama.”
You want raunchy Kathryn Hahn, you’re gonna get it, care of a slapdash followup that has mostly forgotten what made the original so weirdly charming.
Set soon after the events of the original film, “A Bad Moms Christmas” follows the eponymous bad moms as they attempt to work through the most stressful time of the year — aka the holidays.

Christmas can be a happy occasion, but sometimes having to spend so much quality time with your mom can a little much.

“Oh you know it’s…” Kiki begins, clearing her throat before she continues. “It’s okay, I guess, yeah. I mean, my mom got her hair cut and colored exactly like mine, but I think that’s pretty normal, right?”
Tentatively she asks her friends Amy...

A new full red-band trailer has been released for A Bad Moms Christmas and if you liked the first movie, you're probably going to love what the sequel has to offer. The film features the return of Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell, and Kathryn Hahn battling the Christmas holiday and to make things more difficult for them, their mother's are coming into town to visit. It's very obvious that they aren't happy that their mothers are coming to visit because they all have issues with them. Their mothers are being played by Christine Baranski, Susan Sarandon, and Cheryl Hines. You can see three character posters below the trailer that shows each of the main characters with their on-screen mom. This sequel looks like it could be fun.

"Can you put a price tag on wonder?" No, I guess you can't. Stx Entertainment has debuted another rowdy new trailer for comedy sequel A Bad Mom's Christmas, from the same writers and directors behind the smash hit Bad Moms just last year. This new trailer is a bit crazier than the first one, because sure it's time to go wild. The three "bad moms" from the original, Milas Kunis, Kristen Bell and Kathryn Hahn, all return. And this time we get to meet their mothers - played by Cheryl Hines, Christine Baranski and Susan Sarandon. Also starring Jay Hernandez, Peter Gallagher, Justin Hartley, David Walton. This looks uncomfortably entertaining, especially if you're in the mood for this kind of raucous comedy. Kathryn Hahn, Mila Kunis, and Kristen Bell in A Bad Moms Christmas
In his review of the 2016 comedy Bad Moms, Jim Batts wrote:
“With their second feature film as directors (21 & Over was the first), screenwriter Jon Lucas and Scott Moore (they did pen the The Hangover) have proven that they can deliver a film that tackles more adult concerns and situations without sacrificing the laughs. The laughs are big and the cast is most engaging (hooray for Hahn), so expect to have a good, raucous time with some Bad Moms.”
