“Magnus” Notches Hat Trick
Indie U.K. distributor Hat Trick International has secured international rights to fantasy-laced police drama “Magnus.” Described to Variety by series producer Anders Tangen as “Inspector Clouseau Meets Stranger Things,” the series follows doofus detective Magnus Udredal, demoted through the ranks down to janitor, who is drafted by a Central Unit special investigator in league with U.S. military intelligence to solve the murder of a girl and disappearance of Norway’s most famous actor. The series is produced by Norway’s Nrk and Tangen’s Viafilm, behind Netflix hits “Lilyhammer” and “Norsemen.” As they did with “Norsemen,” the series was shot in both Norwegian and English.

“O.J.: Made in America,” which just landed an Oscar nomination for Best Documentary, isn’t just a win for Espn or its producers. It’s perhaps an even bigger victory for unscripted TV.
The Academy Awards may consider “O.J.” a film, but it’s truly a TV show, and its success is a good example of how the unscripted world is finally breaking out of its long malaise. The success of docuseries like “The Jinx” and “Making a Murderer,” and recent reality entries like A&E’s “Leah Remini: Scientology & the Aftermath,” Showtime’s “The Circus,” CNN’s “United Shades of America with W. Kamau Bell,” Netflix’s “Chef’s Table” and many more has helped showcase how diverse and wide-ranging unscripted TV can really be.

National Geographic Channel is making some consolidation changes. The network, a joint venture of Fox Cable Networks and National Geographic, has shuttered its West Coast office in Los Angeles, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. All five employees have been offered relocation packages as Nat Geo looks to build a stronger presence in New York with its office there and in Washington, D.C. The change comes nearly eight months after Nat Geo CEO David Lyle stepped down from his post and Courteney Monroe took over the position, and five months after Tim Pastore was promoted to president of original programming.

This story first appeared in the May 2 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine. When David Lyle and Howard T. Owens joined National Geographic Channels in late 2011, as CEO and president, respectively, their mandate was to make the 21st Century Fox property a force in the cable landscape -- not just another middle-of-the-road reality-show hub. At first, viewers responded. After just a year sharing the helm of Nat Geo, ratings surged to 12-year highs (up 29 percent in its targeted adults 25-to-54 demo). As the president of alternative programming at Fox, Mike Darnell developed a well-earned reputation as a showman with a wicked mind. "I usually like to take a pitch and twist it into something more evil or more dangerous," says Darnell, who was once called "Fox's Point Man For Perversity" by the New York Times.
Darnell, the man behind some of the most notorious reality series and specials on television over the past two decades, left Fox at the end of July. He's now moving on to Warner Bros. Television Group as president of unscripted and alternative TV.
It's the end of an era for Fox, which meets reporters at the Television Critics Association press tour on Thursday without Darnell for the first time in decades. Network execs are still mulling Darnell's replacement. (Among names that have been rumored for the job: National Geographic Channels CEO David Lyle and president Howard T. Owens; Sharon Levy,...

National Geographic has allegedly cut a clip of Mitt Romney out of the film "Seal Team Six: The Raid on Osama bin Laden," in which the Republican presidential candidate appears to oppose the idea of American forces killing bin Laden without approval from Pakistan.
The Huffington Post has exclusively obtained the original clip from the film, which includes the cut Romney soundbite. Romney's statement on bin Laden occurred during a debate on Aug. 5, 2007. "I think Barack Obama is confused as to who are our friends and who are our enemies," Romney says in the clip, before saying he believes it is incorrect to go into a nation working with the U.S. and "potentially bring out a unilateral attack."
In an interview with The New York Times, National Geographic President Howard T. Owens acknowledged that the Romney quote had been cut from the film and said the channel "wouldn't air [the film] if it was propaganda.
