As one of the cast members on AMC.s mega hit zombie drama The Walking Dead, Steven Yeun has demonstrated a wide variety of badass survival skills. You don.t last as long as he has after the apocalypse without knowing how to handle yourself when things get hairy. As it turns out, all of that practice may come in handy in another role, as Yeun has signed on to front the indie action flick Mayhem, which sounds super kick ass. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Steven Yeun has joined the cast of director Joe Lynch.s Mayhem and will lead the movie along side of Australian actress Samara Weaving, who is the niece of The Matrix villain Hugo Weaving, and who will also head up McG.s upcoming horror flick The Babysitter. What we know of the story of Mayhem sounds like it could be right up Yeun.s...

Filmmaker Ben Rock (Alien Raiders, The Blair Witch Project) recently released a brand new webseries entitled 20 Seconds to Live which, as you may have guessed from the title, will feature someone meeting their untimely demise but in some truly unique ways. The first episode is already available here and the next installment of 20 Seconds to Live arrives this Friday.
Daily Dead chatted briefly with Rock about the series, teaming up with Adam Green and ArieScope for their release, and what fans can expect from future episodes.
Let’s start at the beginning—how did the series come about?
Ben Rock: Bob DeRosa is an outrageously accomplished writer for film and television, and he and I also do a lot of fun small theater projects together, mostly at Sacred Fools (where you came to see Baal five years ago and Taste last year). And when we put up one of...

Previously we've seen a couple of impressive short films from producer Ari Shankar from the comic book universe. Joe Lynch directed Truth in Journalism, a take off on the Spider-Man character Venom, and Mike Pecci directed The Dead Can't Be Distracted, which was a bootleg version of The Punisher. Now Shankar is back with Power/Rangers, a gritty, R-rated, 14-minute short film directed by Joseph Kahn (Torque) that adapts "Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers." The film certainly puts an interesting twist on the mythology of the Japanese imported action adventure, and it's much different from the eventual big screen take on the way. Plus, it stars James Van Der Beek and Katie Sackhoff, which is just completely surreal. Watch! Here's Joseph Kahn & Adi Shankar's short film Power/Rangers (via HitFix): And if you're wondering just why Shankar decided to make this movie, here you go: Interestingly enough, Kahn wasn't...

After calling Sunday night's Grammy Awards a "bore," a new photo gallery has fun with "what were they thinking" fashion choices. Topping the list of the 10 "most over the top" Grammy outfits is Rihanna in a pink gown "looking like a cake." The other unusual fashion choices called out are from Charli Xcx, Joy Villa, Bleona Qereti, Madonna, Pharrell Williams with Helen Lasichahn, Mastodon, Jane Fonda, Frankie Grande, and Motorhead. In a related gallery, the five best-dressed are Gwen Stefani, Katy Perry, Chrissy Teigen, Nicole Kidman, and Jennifer Hudson. USA Today -Break- Joe Lynch ranks all 23 Grammy performances from Sunday night's ceremony. In the top five are Beyonce, Sam Smith with Mary J. Blige, Sia, Rihanna with Paul McCartney and Kanye West, and Brandy Clark with Dwight Yoakam. The very bottom of the list consists of Adam Levine with Gwen Stefani, Eric Church, Jessie J with Tom Jones, Pharrell Williams,...

IFC Midnight is releasing Paul Solet’s follow-up to the film Grace, a film that initially made headlines back in 2009, Dark Summer. If you have never seen Grace, you should make a point to see it as soon as possible. Dark Summer is a film that I have been looking forward to for a while and got even more excited when I heard Solet on Adam Green and Joe Lynch’s podcast The Movie Crypt and he mentioned that Dark Summer would be released in 2015.

Salma Hayek's career has been a weird one, ranging from Oscar-contending roles in Frida to the horrible Bandidas as well as serving as executive producer on "Ugly Betty", which is really the only highlight on her resume in the past ten years unless you count her supporting work in the Grown Ups movies. So, to see her going the action route is no big surprise as today we have the first trailer a hard-r actioner which received its R-rating for "strong bloody violence, torture, nudity, sexual images and language." The movie sounds a bit like The Raid in that Hayek plays a woman trapped in her apartment, who must fend off scores of assassins sent by her ruthless ex, a nefarious drug kingpin. Joe Lynch (Wrong Turn 2) directs and Togo Igawa (The Last Samurai) co-stars. Radius is handling the release stateside, though no official date has yet been set.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas, so a big congrats to that team. The final wave of programming for that festival has now arrived, and highlights include the Antonio Banderas-starring sci-fi film “Automata,” Daniel Radcliffe in “Horns," Peter Strickland’s “The Duke Of Burgundy” (which we just gave a big rave out of Tiff), celebrated Cannes horror "It Follows," Sundance indie thriller "The Guest," the remake of "The Town That Dreaded Sundown," the complete director’s cut of Lars Von Trier’s “Nymphomaniac” (both versions in one film that is a total of 5 hours and 24 minutes long) and "My Life Directed By Nicolas Winding Refn," a documentary about the eccentric filmmaker by Liv Corfixen. Plus the festival has added many guests, including Joe Lynch, Liv Corfixen & Nicolas Winding Refn, Edgar Wright, Ti West, Nacho Vigalondo, Alfonso Gomez- Rejon, and David Robert Mitchell....

Joe Lynch does a great job aesthetically. And he yanks sound performances from an experienced and comfortable lot of thespians. The pics editing is impressive and the production sports a generally clean appealing look to it. Again theres success to be found most certainly. But the comedy sputters time and again. Neither Steve Zahn nor Peter Dinklage (the two strongest comedians attached for my money) can prevent the vessel from taking on water.

If you aren’t plugged in to what’s going on with short films, you’re missing out on an insane amount of outstanding entertainment. People talk about how difficult it was to whittle down Best Of lists for features this year (Her or Gravity or 12 Years a Slave?!) but after watching almost 3,000 shorts in 12 months, it feels like the depth of talent is growing in a big way on the small side. As a testament to the medium’s freedoms, more and more feature filmmakers are returning to it. No longer simply a calling card or an early stepping stone, shorts have an undeniable power coupled with an infinite platform that some are just now discovering. They’re also strange to categorize. For some, the internet is a red carpet while for others, it’s a final stop after touring festivals for years. As such, some of the best short films of 2013 were made a couple...

'Knights of Badassdom' Director's New Short Is the Coolest Marvel Film Marvel Had Nothing to Do With
What do you get when you cross Wrong Turn 2 director Joe Lynch, French serial killer mockumentary Man Bites Dog, and Marvel Comics? You get one of the coolest short fan films we’ve seen in a very long time. It’s hard to talk about Truth in Journalism – Lynch’s 17-minute short film – without spoiling what makes it so awesome. With that in mind, you’ll just have to take my word for it and watch -- if you’re a Marvel fanboy, you’re going to want to see this. A French film crew (very similar to the one in Remy Belvaux’s feature) follows a reporter with some very questionable ethics around as part of a documentary. As they get more involved with their subject, they start to wonder if maybe they should call the whole thing off...

During this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, Joe Lynch (Wrong Turn 2) debuted a brand new short film for people to enjoy, from producer Adi Shankar. While this doesn’t sound all that interesting at first, this is the same producer who brought us that ridiculously awesome Punisher short film, Dirty Laundry, which brought Thomas Jane back to the role. Truth in Journalism is sort-of a follow-up to that and focuses on another fan-favorite Marvel character. The full short film is now available online for all to enjoy!
Ryan Kwanten (True Blood) stars in this found-footage style, short film (which takes heavy influence from Dog Bites Man) which follows a New York City journalist being documented by a French film crew. It’s a slow burn kind of movie, but interesting enough to keep you watching.

Last year it was Thomas Jane returning as Frank Castle in short film form to show how the character can be done bone-bendingly right. This year, producer Adi Shankar has teamed with none other than Joe Lynch (!) to deliver another solid take on an iconic comic book figure. Ryan Kwanten verbally tap dances his way through Truth in Journalism as Eddie Brock, a reporter with a particular affliction and an ax to grind against your friendly neighborhood hero. With the similar snap of Man Bites Dog, Eddie has allowed a French film crew to document his morbid daily life. In under 14 minutes, they’ve righted the wrongs of Spider-Man 3, and you’ll probably want to stick around after the credits. Why do I feel like Patrick Bateman is working in one of those office buildings?...

Producer Adi Shankar, who previously helped make the short film The Punisher: Dirty Laundry, has once again dipped back into the comic book world for his latest small project, this time plucking a fan-favorite character out of the Spider-Man universe. Above is a new short film from Shankar written and directed by Joe Lynch and starring True Blood's Ryan Kwanten, and as the title suggests, the story centers on the alien symbiote infected villain known as Venom. The fan-made short - which premiered at San Diego Comic-Con and has nothing to do with Marc Webb's upcoming The Amazing Spider-Man 2 - appears to be set some time in the 1980s and centers on a French documentary crew that seems to be making a film about notorious journalist Eddie Brock (Kwanten). While the subject seems to think that the movie is meant to pet his ego, the crew is...

Last year at the San Diego Comic-Con, Thomas Jane, along with producer Adi Shankar and director Phil Joanou, got a big reaction when they unveiled a hugely unofficial yet incredibly satisfying short called Dirty Laundry, which saw Jane reprising the role of Frank Castle, Aka The Punisher. Shankar was back at the Con, this time with True Blood's Ryan Kwanten and director Joe Lynch for Truth In Journalism. Because some things are better seen without too much advance warning, carve out roughly 17 minutes and watch the short.Truth In Journalism finds Kwanten as a decidedly sleazy New York hack prowling the mean streets of the Big Apple for stories, usually those involving death or scandal. He’s being profiled by a French documentary crew following a traumatic incident he’s reluctant to talk about.Suffice to say, something happens, but we won’t get into the details for fear of spoiling anything.

Sex scenes are an inevitability in most horror films. Some of them are tactful, add something to the film, and tell the audience something about the characters involved. Some are racy, appear tacked on, and the audience wouldn’t know the difference if the scene were removed altogether. Regardless of how the scene plays out, it is statistically proven that audiences love sex... actually, I just made that up, but if there were a survey conducted, I fully expect that the results would be overwhelmingly in support of onscreen sex. It goes beyond just seeing bare body parts, though. There's something about onscreen sex in a horror film that conjures memories of the horror and grindhouse films of yesteryear. But most importantly, we just love sex, and we love violence, and when the two are combined we can barely contain ourselves. The more gratuitous, the better. So, for your carnal enjoyment,...

At last year's Comic-Con, producer Adi Shankar debuted a fan-film titled Dirty Laundry featuring actor Thomas Jane's unofficial return as Marvel's Punisher. Now, Shankar has hired director Joe Lynch to helm a new, unrelated, short starring True Blood's Ryan Kwanten. Although the name of Kwanten's character hasn't been revealed a handful of images have debuted and I'm going out on a (short) limb to state he's clearly playing John Constantine, the infamous antihero and occult detective from DC Comics' Hellblazer series. Constantine has already had a feature film based on him with Keanu Reeves in the lead role. According to Collider.com, Shankar's yet to be titled "follow up to Dirty Laundry" will premiere at the Machinima Comic-Con panel this coming Saturday, July 20th, at 10 am in the...

Filmed at six different cons, the film is an in-depth exploration of fans like us, why we love horror, and the ways we gather together to share our passion. “I felt myself growing closer and closer to the genre that we all love so much," says Kuchta of the project. "It means a lot to be able to share that love with people, and that's what Fantasm is all about." Several noteworthy names participated in the film: Heather Langenkamp and Amanda Wyss of A Nightmare on Elm Street, Tom Atkins (pictured above) of Escape from New York and Night of the Creeps, director Joe Lynch (Wrong Turn 2) and Troma's Lloyd Kaufman (The Toxic Avenger) are among the interviews featured. Fantasm is currently in post-production and will make the festival rounds this fall,...

Joe Lynch wonders what has caused alternative music to surge at the Grammys: "Someone in the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences must have discovered Pitchfork around 2008. In the last five years, the Grammys have turned from privileging chart-toppers and classic legacy artists to rewarding left-field alternative acts. In short, the Grammys have graduated from high school to college." Fuse -Addprediction:76:347:Click to predict Album of the Year:addprediction- Steven Soderbergh discusses his career and explains his plan to semi-retire from filmmaking: "Just to be clear, I won’t be directing “cinema,” for lack of a better word. But I still plan to direct — theater stuff, and I’d do a TV series if something great were to come along." Vulture Norah Jones will perform nominated song "Everybody Needs a Best Friend" at the Oscars: "'I had such a great time recording this song with [Seth ...

The Wrong Turn franchise, which began in 2003, has had a longer than deserved shelf life due to the fact the second Joe Lynch directed film was that rare beast; a straight to DVD sequel better than the original. So after the pre-requisite prequel we are now on the fifth film where they are not even trying anymore.
Starting off with an explicit sex scene followed by some college kids with what looks like half the drug supply of an entire weekend at the Burning Man festival (just so you know they are doomed). The film reveals that the kids are actually in West Virginia for the ‘Mountain Man’ festival. Quite what this entails is anyone’s guess as they have camped on a patch of land probably just outside the studio office door and we learn that the police department is really rushed off their feet because of it, but we never see the effects,...

This month, our community collectively said goodbye for a while to the flagship Alamo Drafthouse location and home of press screenings, special events, festivals like SXSW and aGLIFF Polari, and the two most dear in my heart: Butt-Numb-a-Thon and Fantastic Fest.
I have countless memories of this place, beginning with my first screening there eight years ago: Robin Williams in The Big White, the first screening of the first Fantastic Fest in 2005. I've likely seen more movies in this cinemaplex than in all the other theaters I've visited in my life combined. Certainly more than I dare attempt to count, though an average of 30 films each year for Fantastic Fest plus the five 24-hour Butt-Numb-a-Thons would equal roughly 600 hours, or 25 solid days of films watched there before we even started on SXSW, aGLIFF or any of the other shows.
No single word or phrase is sufficient to capture the significance of this place.

Jesse Snider is a comic book writer with a huge task in front of him. He is currently in the process of bringing Evil Ernie back to the racks. And if his first two issues are any sign of what's to come, the future is bright for the Evil one. Snider recently sat down with Dread Central to talk about the book.
Son of legendary rock star Dee Snider, Jesse Snider's deep love for the Evil Ernie character and the Chaos! universe led him to tackling the task of evolving Ernie, as he feels what worked for the story in the 90's should be modified for greater appeal to today's audiences. He discussed why he felt Brian Pulido's original Evil Ernie character needed new life.
"Lady Death is still owned by Brian Pulido and Lady Death is integral in 99.9 percent of the characters that Chaos! was publishing, so...

Ah, yes, it is now the time of the year when horror movies finally get their due. All year round, the horror community keeps doing what they love but it isn’t until October that the world of gore is universally accepted. Soon you hear about your Aunt getting scared because she finally saw Insidious or your cousin texts you to see if you want to check out Sinister with them. Scary movies start trending and for one month out of the year, it’s Ok to post gory images on your Facebook wall (I do it all year because fuck those people, right?).
I thought it would be fun to briefly talk about five films that I enjoy watching around Halloween, and if you haven’t seen any of these, I hope you check them out. Let me point out that these are not The Top 5 Horror Films Of All Time,...

We've yet to see Wrong Turn 4: Bloody Beginnings arrive on these shores, but the franchise is already plowing ahead with more backwoods, mountain-man, cannibal shenanigans. Wrong Turn 5 is now underway, with erstwhile Pinhead Doug Bradley heading up the cast. The cheerfully gnarly series has been quietly bludgeoning away for almost a decade now. It began with Rob Schmidt's original Hills Have Eyes knock-off in 2003, boasting bloody FX work by the late, great Stan Winston, and surprising everyone by being quite good. Joe Lynch's Dtv sequel Dead End was also better than you might have imagined, and had Rollins in it.Since that point, the series has been adopted by Declan O'Brien (Sharktopus). He made little impression with his forgettable third instalment Left For Dead, but rallied with Bloody Beginnings, a fun prequel which took the action out of the woods and into an abandoned sanitarium, and...

Love is in the air! That's right, gorehounds; it's that time of year again. Valentine's Day is here, and we've got a special treat just for you. There has certainly been no shortage of terrifying couples, obsessions and forbidden loves in fright films over the years. Today we bring you our Top 10 Greatest Horrific Couples.
We're not talking about the hero who battles the monster and saves the helpless girl at the end. That's not going to make this list. We're talking about the couples that were somehow uniquely intertwined within a film. Of course first we have our honorable mentions.
We'd have loved to include Leatherface and Stretch from Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2 here, but they weren't really a couple as Stretch was just using her womanly wiles to try to escape in one piece. Also, you can't really have a list like this without mentioning Bella Swan and...

It’s hard to believe there have been 150 episodes of How I Met Your Mother. In honor of the occasion, I watched the pilot this weekend, and to be honest, it made me a little sad. You see, before this episode, I thought about where the gang has been in 150 episodes — the laughs, the tears, the randomness. And with Lily and Marshall in the suburbs, I wasn’t sure things would ever be the same. This episode put me at ease, and, I think, made change seem…not so scary. [Don't read if you haven't seen the 150th episode of How I Met Your Mother!]

I knew that tonight’s episode of How I Met Your Mother would be a sad (but sweet) one when I found out it centered around Marshall going to visit his father’s grave. But the episode did more than just make me sob (which, I had expected fully). It also gave hope to our gang — who have all experienced their challenges this year — that the New Year will be a great one. And I’d be lying if I said I didn’t benefit from that message a little bit, too. [Spoilers from here on out! Beware!]
I won’t go too far into detail.

We just received word from director Joe Lynch -- who's partnered with G4 for G4 Films' Epictober Film Festival -- that the event has just wrapped up in style with The Birds of Anger, based on Rovio's Angry Birds game. Check out this short -- starring Thor's Jamie Alexander -- after the jump. Here's how G4 describes the film: Inspired by the best-selling mobile game, Rovio's Angry Birds, "The Birds of Anger" harkens back to Alfred Hitchcock's 1963 classic "The Birds," and gives gamers a glimpse into a world where birds not only target pigs, but people as well. "The Birds of Anger" is directed by Gregg Bishop, director of the...

Last week we directed your attention to director Joe Lynch's partnership with G4 to produce new horror shorts for G4TV.com's month-long Epictober Film Festival. Each of these three shorts is based on a classic video game: The Hunt (based on Duck Hunt), Birds of Anger (based on Angry Birds), and Kart Driver (based on Mario Kart). Now we just got an exclusive look at the poster art for Kart Driver, directed by filmmaker and FEARnet blogger Drew Daywalt, as well as the film's hilarious trailer (a parody of the new Ryan Gosling thriller Drive). Check 'em out after the jump. Drew Daywalt tells us, 'Joe Lynch, Stephen Johnson and I had the crazy idea of making a sort of gonzo...

I recently called the Wrong Turn series the ultimate party franchise (or something like that). Reviewing No. 4 tonight, I was proven right. I had taken my seat and was about thirty minutes into the Declan O’Brien sequel and was getting into it when it started to flatline. Nothing out of the ordinary was happening and I was starting to get bored, and that’s a bad sign when your mind begins to wander just when the bodies are beginning to pile up.
I’d made it through the backstory of how our central inbred brothers came into being and how they escaped and took over a sanatorium in West Virginia. I’d even made it through how the supernaturally attractive group of friends had taken that wrong turn and ended up in the same hospital years later to avoid a snowstorm. I’d even...

A few days ago we told you about the three short films Joe Lynch is putting together for G4's Epictober celebration, each helmed by a different director. Now we're pleased to present the exclusive first look at the artwork for the Gregg Bishop-directed "The Birds of Anger", which closes out the mini film festival on October 26th.
In case you've forgotten, each short is a mash-up of video game premises with familiar tropes from people's favorite horror movies. Along with Bishop's "The Birds of Anger", we'll be seeing Sam Balcomb's "The Hunt", inspired by Duck Hunt, and Drew Daywalt's “Kart Driver”, which gives the legendary racing game Mario Kart a darker, deadlier spin.
Here's what Bishop told us about his involvement: "I knew it would be interesting to take Angry Birds, a game that everyone knows and is addicted to, and turn it into a horror film...

The name Declan O’Brien may not be that well known to genre fans, but we know his work. We’ve all either seen or heard about some of his films. Let’s admit it, we all kind of wish we’d been present at the Sharktopus production meetings, don’t we? Later he landed a pretty respectable gig directing the third Wrong Turn flick, following up horror faves Rob Schmidt and Joe Lynch.
Now, he’s set to unleash the latest entry in the inbred cannibal hillbilly franchise with Wrong Turn 4: Bloody Beginnings, hitting DVD and Blu-ray on October 25th. Be sure to check out the Wrong Turn 4: Bloody Beginnings Cannibal Cookbook on Facebook. Enjoy.
